Health and science facilities are diverse, complex, and often present the challenge of being delivered in a live environment.
Our teams are experienced in the technical design and management of health projects and show sensitivity to project stakeholders when working in a live environment. Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital Redevelopment Stage 2 and Medical Imaging Building
Stage 2 works will provide integrated purpose-built health care facilities including a new six storey Clinical Services Building (CSB) which will accommodate a combined Intensive Care and High Dependency Unit, combined Respiratory/Cardiac and Coronary Care beds collocated with a Cardiac Investigations Unit, Inpatient Medical Units (including general medicine, stroke and dementia/delirium beds), Medical Assessment Unit, Paediatrics, Ambulatory Care Centre, Transit Lounge, collocated education space with the University of Sydney and retail space.
The project also includes refurbishing and expanding the emergency department within the HOPE building (Hospital’s Obstetrics, Paediatrics, & Emergency) providing purpose-built clinical space to meet the region’s increased demand.

Watpac will deliver a number of projects as part of the Herston Quarter redevelopment within the Herston Health Precinct in Brisbane, including construction of the new Specialist Rehabilitation and Ambulatory Care Centre (SRACC) for Metro North Hospital and Health Service. The SRACC building will provide 35,157 square metres of facilities comprising 100 rehabilitation beds, special purpose rehabilitation support areas, and a surgical and endoscopic centre with a 32 bed surgical inpatient room, seven operating theatres, three endoscopy rooms and recovery spaces.
The project also includes a Sky Bridge Link to the adjacent Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, the Spanish Steps – which will extend from Herston Road into the main public realm, and associated infrastructure works.

This project comprised three elements including the Ecosciences Precinct, which is Australia’s first multi-agency centre dedicated to solving the country’s biggest environmental issues, site facilitation works for the Boggo Road Urban Village and the Health and Food Sciences precinct at Coopers Plains.
New laboratories and specialist facilities have been delivered as part of this multi-site project. The Ecosciences Precinct offers a variety of interactive spaces and quiet research areas, conducive to the mixed nature of research activities.

The largest building of its kind in the southern hemisphere, the Translational Research Institute (TRI) has provided Queensland’s leading translational researchers with a comprehensive facility for discovery, production, clinical testing and manufacturing of new biopharmaceuticals.
Watpac constructed the seven-storey building including four floors of research laboratories and research support, administration and teaching facilities. The project also included construction of a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility adjacent to the main TRI building.

QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute

Located at the Royal Brisbane Hospital campus, this project has created a leading medical research facility for QIMR offering world-class laboratories, flexible space and infrastructure capabilities to accommodate future technologies.
Delivered in three stages over seven years, the project included design and construction of the new 13-level QIMR Central Building, which offers an important link between the three QIMR buildings, as well as refurbishment and renovation of the existing buildings.

This highly complex, multi-level 4,250 square metre facility for the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) was designed to meet the requirements of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency and Australian Non-proliferation and Safeguards Office.
The facility will significantly increase ANSTO’s capacity to produce the critical life-saving radioisotope Molybdenum-99 to a growing world market, positioning Australia as a global leader in this field.

The 284 bed private hospital features a 24 hour Emergency Care Centre and 13 operating theatres including two Catheterisation Laboratories and a state-of-the-art Hybrid theatre, medical specialties including cardiology, oncology, urology, and new paediatric and obstetric services.
This is the biggest private hospital development undertaken in the Gold Coast region for more than two decades. The facility has been designed to have the capacity for future expansion to meet with growing demands.

Works involved the construction of a new four-storey clinical extension to the existing Port Macquarie Base Hospital including new operating theatres, and facilities to house the new intensive care unit, paediatrics and emergency departments. A new ambulance forecourt, main entry and inpatient ward were also delivered as part of the project.
The expansion has provided the region with a vital piece of social infrastructure including improved access to a wider range of services such as cardiology including a new cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory, increased elective surgery capacity and emergency department admissions.

The new Mater Private Hospital Springfield is located at Springfield Central within ‘Health City’, a 52-hectare master-planned health and wellness precinct.
The Stage 1 works program involved the construction of a six-level, 10,000 square metre hospital comprising four operating theatres, a 64 bed inpatient unit, a day surgery unit and Greater Springfield’s first cancer care centre.

Ronald McDonald House South Brisbane, located opposite the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, is the largest Ronald McDonald House in the world. The 12-level tower features 84 accommodation rooms with capacity to expand to 126 rooms.
The House also comprises communal spaces including lounges, kitchen and dining facilities, work spaces, indoor and outdoor recreation areas, a roof top function area and 266 square metres of ground level retail.
The project also delivered associated landscaping, vehicle access facilities and on-site parking.

Located at James Cook University in Townsville, the AITHM is a new world-class infectious diseases research facility, a global leader in health security and tropical disease research. Watpac also delivered the Translational Research Facility, a 1,000 square metre building that will include offices, conference facilities, consultant rooms and back of house facilities.

Watpac is working as part of the Plenary Health consortium to deliver additional public healthcare facilities at the existing hospital.
The 13,000 square metre expansion includes 160 new beds, the hospital’s first intensive care unit, six new operating theatres, additional recovery capacity, a new day surgery unit, upgraded pharmacy, pathology and back-of-house areas, more than 300 new staff and public car parks, and a new front entry building that includes education and training spaces for Monash University.

Watpac delivered this project for Health Infrastructure and the New South Wales Department of Justice.
The state-of-the-art facility delivers integrated coronial and forensic pathology services and supports collaborative work. The three-level building includes identification and waiting rooms, counselling rooms, a mortuary and laboratories, conference rooms, court registry, administration rooms, offices, and the Coroner’s suites and courtrooms.

This project delivered an expansion to both the north and south precincts of the hospital. North precinct works involved expanding current hospital infrastructure including the Inpatient Unit which now accommodates an additional 60 beds and two new wards, eight consulting suites, a Discharge and Admissions lounge, pharmacy shell, new lift and stair cores. A new basement carpark has also been delivered to provide the hospital with an additional 180 car parking spaces.
South precinct works involved expanding the imaging department, and delivering a new kitchen block, maintenance and supply department areas, and loading docks.

This major expansion to the existing hospital involved construction of a new building that now serves as the entrance to this high quality cancer treatment facility. This has created an additional 60 beds, three operating theatres and a day oncology unit. Watpac also undertook refurbishment works converting the day oncology unit into a second stage recovery unit, and expanded the Central Sterile Services Department.
Watpac worked closely with key hospital stakeholders to ensure the existing facility remained fully operational throughout construction.

Kempsey District Hospital Redevelopment
The major expansion, which formed part of an $80 million joint State and Federal Government project, involved constructing a new 10,000 square metre, five-storey hospital building within the existing hospital grounds. The new building accommodates a new emergency department and emergency medical unit, new clinical support services, a coronary care unit, acute inpatient beds, operating theatres and a day surgery unit.

Fifteen new schools for the Victorian State Government’s New Schools PPP Project were delivered by Watpac as part of the Learning Communities Victoria consortium, which also included Amber Infrastructure and Spotless Group. This multi-site project involved the construction of primary, secondary and special schools, in addition to some community facilities.
This was the largest new school construction project in Victoria with schools being delivered in the state’s fastest growing metropolitan and regional areas.

This major infrastructure program saw the delivery of 10 new schools in high growth areas of South East Queensland including Pimpama, Burpengary, Ripley Valley, Springfield, Griffin, Bellbird Park, Caboolture and Redbank Plains. The Queensland Government project was delivered via a public private partnership (PPP) mechanism as part of the Plenary Schools consortium, with the Watpac component of the works program involving the design and construction of the new schools.
Watpac delivered a variety of different facilities for each school including administration centres, technology spaces, libraries, sports ovals and green spaces.

The eight-level multi-purpose university facility was built to provide a combination of educational, workplace and social areas with flexible teaching and learning spaces.
The ‘Live Building’ concept was incorporated into the building’s construction and was a key component of the project. This concept is relevant to the building’s occupants – structural, civil and materials engineering students – as it shows how the building is operating.
A myriad of sensors were built into the structure that report to live displays in the main foyer showing energy usage, air conditioning performance, lift speeds and acceleration, and the structure’s reaction to live loads.

Sir Samuel Griffith Centre
The six-storey, 4,000 square metre building generates its own power supply and is a key resource to delivering genuine sustainable energy options to Australian and global communities. The centre has brought together environmental scientists, engineers, psychologists, urban planners, health, and legal and business experts to develop cross-disciplinary sustainability solutions. The solar-panelled glass façade generates its own power supply.
The building has 100 offices and multi-purpose lecture facilities for 200 students. The project was awarded a 6 Star Green Star education v1 design rating, and also received a 6 Star Green Star As-built rating.

The two-stage Rheinmetall Defence Australia Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence (MILVEHCOE) forms part of the $5.2 billion Land 400 Phase 2 project being delivered by Rheinmetall for the delivery of 211 highly protected BOXER combat reconnaissance vehicles to the Australian Defence Force.
MILVEHCOE will include a main production facility along with high quality industrial production and testing facilities and an administration building where Rheinmetall will design, develop, manufacture and sustain the 8x8 armoured vehicles. A fleet of more than 2,500 high mobility logistics trucks for the Australian Army will also be sustained at the facility.

The new facility will include the construction of four accommodation blocks each with 110 beds and an exercise yard, an industries and programs building, clinic, associated custodial offices, a network of secure walkways, outdoor recreational areas including sports fields, and a new secure perimeter that will have an integrated security system.
Watpac will also undertake refurbishment works to the existing facility including modifications to the gatehouse, visitors building and security services as well as associated earthworks, services, roads, paving, carparks, landscaping and fencing.

Adelaide Airport Terminal Expansion
A major expansion and refurbishment of the existing terminal will be delivered including expanding the international inbound passenger processing and baggage claim facility, international arrivals duty free and passenger and immigration facilities, retail tenancies, and the international gate lounge and duty free areas.
The project also involves delivering a new retail concourse with passenger facilities and amenities, and provision for Virgin Australia’s domestic lounge and other international airline lounges.

The first works package will be delivered at Denman in New South Wales and comprise the construction of explosive stores buildings and associated facilities, three light frangible buildings, a mechanical handling equipment store, and an access control building. Associated infrastructure for each of these facilities will also be delivered including security, services and roadworks.
The second multi-site works package involves delivering various explosive ordnance facilities at four operational bases – Mangalore, HMAS Cerberus and Point Wilson in Victoria, and Twofold Bay in New South Wales. Civil and engineering services will be delivered at each site, in support of Defence’s capabilities.

The Adelaide Airport Landside Infrastructure works comprised the construction of a five-level multi-deck car park and a pedestrian plaza space featuring a weatherproof curved linked bridge providing direct access to Terminal 1.
The car park features a state-of-the-art parking guidance system and an impressive curved architectural screen facing the main terminal.

Major works to expand and refurbish the Overseas Passenger Terminal took place in a live environment with minimal disruption to the day-to-day operations of this busy Sydney landmark.
Works involved extending and refurbishing the ground floor and improving access via road upgrades, a new taxi drop off area and the installation of new internal and external lifts. A new mezzanine level and extension to the south forecourt, upgrades to tenancy five and refurbishment of the Customs Hall were also undertaken.
In 2016, the project was recognised with both State and National Awards for Excellence in Construction from the Master Builders Association and Fair Work Building and Construction.

Darwin International Airport Terminal Expansion
The Darwin International Airport expansion project was Watpac’s first construction project in the Northern Territory. The expansion has greatly enhanced the airport’s capacity to accommodate the growing number of domestic and international travellers passing through the terminal.
The project involved the design and construction of a major extension including the expansion of the domestic and international terminals and delivery of additional departure gate lounge areas and security screening zones, new office and retail areas, and improved baggage systems.

Watpac undertook works to relocate the 17th Construction Squadron, 6th Engineer Support Regiment to the RAAF Base Amberley. Public Private Partnerships (Plenary Living)
The Defence Single LEAP (Living Environment and Accommodation Precinct) project encompassed the development of live-in accommodation for single members of the Australian Defence Force.

Complementing the growing number of aviation projects in Watpac’s construction portfolio, Watpac Specialty Services delivered an expansion of Virgin Australia’s domestic terminal for the Brisbane Airport Corporation.
This complex project required the expansion of the terminal to house a larger Virgin Business Lounge, in addition to relocating and upgrading the Virgin Valet area. The project also required the relocation of vital in-ground services that support the full airport operations.

Virgin Australia Baggage Handling System Upgrade
After Watpac’s successful delivery of the Southern Retail Upgrade at the Brisbane Airport, the Group also upgraded the Virgin Australia baggage handling system in a live environment.
Works included upgrading existing baggage carousels, installation of three new carousels and extending the roof to cover a new mezzanine and gantry for the upgraded x-ray machines, and upgraded baggage-handling software to meet new standards.

This 21-level transit-oriented development located at South Bank in Brisbane provides easy access to public transport including South Bank railway station and the South Eastern Busway. The building features A-grade commercial office space, ground floor retail and dining, a gymnasium and basement parking.
Designed to optimise natural light, high indoor air quality, and outstanding standards of energy and water conservation, the building was awarded a 5 Star Green Star Design rating for Office V3 and is targeting a 5 Star Green Star As-Built rating, as well as a 4.5 Star NABERS Energy Rating. Meticulous restoration works to heritage-listed Collins Place, and a major upgrade to the South Bank railway station were also undertaken.

333 George Street
Located on the corner of Martin Place and George Street in the Sydney business district, 333 George Street is an 18-storey premium office tower featuring 15 levels of A-Grade office, three levels of premium retail, rooftop terraces and basement parking.
With a distinctive glass façade, the tower offers five levels of cascading rooftop terraces, bringing the outside in and creating a sense of openness through floor to ceiling glazing.
The project involved the demolition of an existing 14-level building prior to construction commencing on site.

The prestigious 34-storey commercial tower offers 59,100 square metres of A-Grade commercial space, ground floor and podium retail, a pedestrian thoroughfare connecting Ann Street with Turbot Street, basement parking, tenant bike parking and shower and locker facilities. A huge artistic imprint of the Brisbane River is featured on the building’s facade.
Environmentally sustainable elements include rainwater and greywater recycling, and a tri-generation plant for heating, cooling and energy generation. The building achieved Brisbane’s first 6 Star Green Star Design Rating and 6 Star Green Star As-built Rating by the Building Council of Australia.

The new five-storey building houses the City of Greater Dandenong administration offices, as well as a Community Meeting Room / Council Chamber, retail shops and a state-of-the-art Public Library.
A civic square inspired by Federation Square in Melbourne’s CBD has also been constructed and is located in the area north and west of the new building. This space is designed to be enjoyed by the community and offers an events stage, large video screen, cafe, outdoor area, and extensive hard and soft landscaping.

Baiada Poultry Live Bird Shed Expansion
Located within a large operational processing facility, this project involved the design and construction of a new protein rendering facility. Features include tilt panel walls, steel framework and new services to accommodate the rendering equipment.
Watpac liaised closely with the Danish equipment manufacturers throughout the design to ensure this low render facility would provide the best outcomes for the workers, neighbours and the environment.

Watpac was engaged to design and construct new buildings and equipment following a fire at the existing facility. The work was completed within a very short timeframe to minimise the impact on the client.
The project included a new boning room, boning room extension with full processing equipment fit out, carcass chillers, and a distribution facility, as well as extensive external works. The design, installation and commissioning of a new state-of-the-art triple lane boning line was also delivered as part of the works.

This intricate construction project involved significant upgrade of infrastructure, processing, storage and delivery capability for the existing poultry processing plant. Works were undertaken in a live operating environment and to ensure minimal impact on production capacity and safety, the project was delivered in stages.
Upgrades included live-bird receiving capacity, a new services infrastructure building, fire fighting capabilities and civil works.

This is one of the largest industrial facilities constructed in south-east Queensland. It comprises 72,000 square metres of ambient and refrigerated warehousing, 85,000 square metres of roads and parking, and 82,000 square metres of landscaping.
Watpac also delivered receipt/despatch facilities, attendant plant and services buildings, extensive in-ground services, and fire-engineered solutions.

This complex upgrade involved constructing the multi-use Plant Room South, which has doubled the facility’s production output. This building includes a 20 forklift recharging facility, boiler house, cartons and tote store, dirty crate washing facility and a carton-forming facility.
Watpac also implemented a fire engineering strategy to reduce the risk of fire and safety hazards due to the increased size of the facility.

An upgrade to the 2,200 square metre facility included designing a new process layout as well as a new mezzanine floor with sophisticated office fit-out and high-end design. Sorting, packing, chilling, value-adding and dispatching the product will be carried out in the new facility. It has also provided the client with the opportunity to become an AQIS and Halal certified facility to supply international customers.
The team overcame a number of challenges presented by working in a relatively confined site including maintaining strict hygiene standards, ensuring minimal disruption to staff and timing of deliveries.

A feature of this 4,500 square metre facility at the busy Brisbane Markets is the cutting-edge high humidity, fast cooling rooms for fresh produce prior to storage or dispatch. This considerably improves the longevity of the produce.
Challenges the team successfully overcame included operating in the bustling live environment of the markets and needing to use 24 metre piles for stability due to its proximity to Oxley Creek.
