1.2 AVANTECH ADVANTAGES

Avantech’s highly experienced team is committed to completing work in a manner that provides clients with highly reliable and cost effective equipment. Avantech’s team provides the following advantages:

Avantech provides innovative solutions to resolve client issues. A few of our innovative solutions are highlighted below:

Zero Liquid Discharge: Avantech has supplied multiple treatment systems used to transform facility wastewater into pure product water for reuse and a dry solid for disposal. The River Bend system, shown below, incorporates ozonation, media filtration, cartridge filtration, reverse osmosis, ion exchange, evaporation and a remote operator control station.

Carbon Ozone

Powdered Media Demineralizer:

Avantech’s innovative Powdered Media Demineralizer (PMD) allows our BWR customers to reuse ion exchange resin from their condensate polishing systems. It effectively desalinates wastewater, thus reducing the ionic load on downstream polishing demineralizers. The use of this component reduces plant wet waste volumes by at least 50%, thus saving plants an average of $500,000 annually.

In-Situ Evap

In-Situ Evaporator: This is a versatile low throughput evaporator designed for treating difficult waste streams that contain hazardous and/or radioactive impurities. All evaporation takes place in a standard DOT-17H 55-gallon drum; therefore, processing and packaging is accomplished in the same container - thus reducing materials handling. All operations and materials handling is remote so worker exposure is minimized.

A-43/A-170: Utilized at Connecticut Yankee, San Onofre Unit – 1 and Hanford K-Basin for packaging irradiated metal and fuel debris. This underwater process container packaged slurry and produced a clean filtrate for return to the reactor cavity or fuel pool. It can be dewatered and packaged in a transport cask while submersed.

Avantech’s team is comprised of the leading experts in the field of Liquid Radwaste Processing.

Chemistry Expertise: Avantech has the nuclear industries chemistry experts for the application of advanced processes, sdisinfection, chemical coagulation/flocculation, advanced oxadsorption, backflushable filtration, decarbonation and revertreatment of radioactive wastewater.

Operational Implementation: Avantech personnel have parstartup and operation of over 100 water and wet waste treatmen

System Integration: One of our true strengths is the abiprocesses in a manner to obtain optimal efficiency.

Avantech’s documented Engineering Design and NQA-1 QuaProgram.

This design and quality system has been audited and approveddelineates the controls and responsibilities necessary to assure customer requirements, codes, licenses, regulations and standard

segmented. The purpose of this water purification system was three fold; first it had to maintain “see the bottom clarity” in a 25’ deep pool, next, it had to lower the concentration of insoluble and soluble radionuclides in the pool; and lastly, the waste produced by the system had to be packaged in a form and concentration that was acceptable for disposal in Barnwell, SC. All the high dose rate components, such as filters, demineralizers and HICs were submersed in the pool where they encountered dose rates in excess of 10,000 R/Hr while lower dose components were placed inside shields on the reactor cavity deck. All components were designed to maintain worker exposure ALARA. Backups were provides for all pumps and similar components to ensure continued operation even during failure or maintenance activities. West Valley – Selective Ion Exchange System: Supplied unique filtration and zeolite based ion exchange system for operation inside the Remote Handled Waste Facility hot cell. Design incorporated remote PLC control for pump and controls, and media cartridges capable of remote replacement with the hot cell manipulator. Contact: Joe Kwiatkowski 716-942-4966. West Valley – Hot Cell System

Oak Ridge National Labs – Spallation Neutron Source: AVANTech will design, construct, and deliver filtration and ion exchange purification systems for the SNS Target Vessel Cooling Loops. A key to winning this project was the manner in which AVANTech was able to meet the stringent ALARA goals and standards established by this project. To meet project standards, AVANTech’s proposed an innovative filter and ion exchange column design incorporating lead shielding directly into each components pressure boundary, thereby eliminating the need for large bulky shield walls. Additionally, each ion exchange and filter system has a fully remote system configuration, whereby, spent resin from the ion exchange unit is remotely sluiced out of the column and fresh resin is remotely sluiced in. Similarly, with the filter unit, a remotely operated manipulator opens the vessel and, likewise, remotely removes the one-piece filter assembly. Each pressure vessel is constructed of stainless steel, ASME U-1A stamped, and registered with the National Board. All components are skid mounted allowing for easy movement, placement, and manipulation. Finally, AVANTech provided the SNS Project with both structural and seismic analyses on all aspects of the filtration and ion exchange systems. Contact: Lorelei Jacobs, ORNL, (865) 574-6530.

K-Basin Spoils Collection System: Comprehensive system for collection, treatment and packaging of wastewater associated with concrete Hydrolasing/ decontamination. Avantech’s scope of work included, design, fabrication, testing, onsite startup and documentation of this safety class system. Primary components included cyclone separation, absolute filtration, zeolite exchange and two-bed demineralization. All debris and solids will be packaged in Avantech’s A -43 High Integrity Container. Contact: Mike Lehr (970) 663-1431.

Fermi Dirty Waste Treatment: Unique wastewater treatment system that incorporates the use of carbon adsorption, photo-chemical oxidation, ion exchange and evaporation for the treatment of widely varying waste streams at the Fermi Nuclear Station. Nine Mile Point – Tank Sludge Cleaning System (TSCS): Provided innovative system for remotely removing sludge, sand and debris. TSCS incorporates the use of a special agitator/ mixing pump and our Solids Separation Collection Vessel (SSCV). The TSCS retrieved sludge, separated and packaged suspended solids associated with the sludge and returned filtered water for reuse. Key differentiators of Avantech’s equipment include fast sludge removal (20 ft3/Hr), elimination of fine particulate in water returned to the plant and minimal use of plant systems and components. Further, the TSCS pre-concentrates (or thickens) the sludge to minimize dewatering efforts. This methodology minimizes sludge handling, particle breakdown, cross-contamination and overall packaging time. This unique system recycled all sluice water back to tank, which eliminated the generation of secondary wastewater for return to the plant. Contact: Joe Amico (860) 930-0459.
