Community & Student Engagement Accountability System 2013-2014 Campus Ratings for Canyon High School Background Information Community & Student Engagement Accountability System Under House Bill 5 (passed last year by the 83 rd Texas Legislature), all districts are required to evaluate the district’s performance and the performance of each campus in regard to community and student engagement. Districts must assign one of four performance ratings – Exemplary, Recognized, Acceptable or Unacceptable – to the district and each campus for overall performance, including the following categories: Fine arts; Wellness and physical education; Community and parental involvement; 21 st Century Workforce Development program; Second language acquisition program; Digital learning environment; Dropout prevention strategies; and Educational programs for gifted and talented students. House Bill 5 requires a local committee or committees to determine the criteria that the district uses to evaluate and assign performance ratings and to evaluate the district’s compliance with statutory reporting and policy requirements. In Comal Independent School District, the District Educational Improvement Council (DEIC) developed the rating criteria and the campus site- based decision-making teams determined the ratings for each category. Under House Bill 5, districts must post the ratings and compliance status for the district and each campus on the school district’s website by August 8, 2014.

Background Information Community & Student Engagement Accountability System

Under House Bill 5 (passed last year by the 83

The overall Community and Student Engagement rating was based on a review of the variety of programs

offered at Canyon High School. Under the State Accountability System, the campus Met Standard in both

2012-2013 and 2013-2014. Most areas of the Community and Student Engagement System were felt to be

well above average for a high school of this size, and thus, the overall rating of recognized reflects this.

Fine Arts

The Fine Arts Department at Canyon High School offers a variety of classes, programs, and opportunities

for students to participate. CHS offers opportunities in band, choir, theater, visual arts (painting, sculpture,

drawing, and jewelry making) and piano. Students have performed well at state contests and competitions.

The Canyon High School rating in this category is nearly exemplary

due the numbers of student who participate in extracurricular

activities. CHS has well over half its student population involved in

some type of extracurricular activity. Students and parents also have

daily access to qualified counselors, nurse and nurse's assistant.

Community & Parental Involvement

Canyon High School enjoys great support from our parents and community. Parents are actively involved

in the various booster organizations. Students are actively involved in community service projects throughout

the area. Students raise funds for a common cause selected by the Student Council during the annual SPUD

(Students Performing Unselfish Deeds) Games. CHS students have donated over 200 pints of blood yearly to

the local blood bank. The AFJROTC Program performs several hundred hours of community service

throughout the area. Other clubs and organizations take part in service projects as well.

Canyon High School offers a variety of Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses and has many

students who take multiple courses. There are courses offered that provide students with opportunities to

earn certifications before they graduate from high school. CHS also offers a variety of dual credit and

advanced placement courses.

Second Language Acquisition Programs

Canyon High School offers four languages other than English (Spanish, Latin, French, and German). The

language program is focused toward students having a working knowledge of the language rather than full

acquisition of the language. With the introduction of the immersion programs in elementary schools, the

immersion plan at the secondary level is still in the development phase. CHS offers an English Language

Learners Program (ELL) for those students who are new to the country. The ELL Program concentrates on

helping students acquire the skills needed to learn the English language.

Canyon High School is fortunate to have very good technology and technology support. Teachers and

students have access to a variety of devices and programs. Teachers are continuing to attend trainings on

implementation in the classroom.

Dropout Prevention Strategies

Weekly Leaver Team meetings which include the attendance officer, counselors, registrar, administration and

the campus social worker have led to reduced negative leavers at Canyon High School. Staff is very

conscious of the population served at CHS and is always searching for ways to help students graduate from

high school.
