featured artworkGeometric Occasional TableLewis PowerI have designed and constructed an occasional table reflecting my chosen work ‘geometric’. I looked at many di!erent geometric forms from all fields of design as well as looking into the work of artists and sculptors. My main inspirations were honeycomb and how the hexagon shape is repeated numerous times to create a unique structure and also Marc Newson’s Voronoi Sharlf. The table has been constructed using five hexagon patterns all being attached to create a geometric shape with an A frame structure this makes the occasional table strong and sturdy. The shaped sides are 6mm Birch Ply and the spacers at the top are aluminium tube.

featured artworkFit for a QueenAlice LambThe theme I have chosen to investigate for my Final Major Project is ‘Fit for a Queen’. I have aimed to produce a range of mixed media pieces such as teacups and piggy banks alongside textile pieces such as cushions and aprons, all inspired by the Diamond Jubilee. For my influences I have explored the Queen in depth alongside British tea parties to influence my outcomes, and have combined inspiration from artists such as Cath Kidston, Emma Bridgewater, Jan Constantine and Katie Clement.Combining these inspirations has enabled me to create decorative pieces fusing my interest in design crafts, mixed media and textiles.

Fashion & Clothing

featured artworkSami Hogg – Awarded Psyche Young Designer of the Year at the Summer Show 2012Artists and designers claim to use traditional ideas and techniques within their work, and I sought to find what this meant. My FMP resembles the fact that clothing is not just about what you look like; it’s about who you are and how it communicates to other people. I have explored di!erent aspects of tradition, and based my work on tradition within storytelling, particularly ghost stories. Behind every tradition lies a story to tell.

featured artworkFrazer MetcalfeMy work aims to challenge the media’s influence on body image and how this impacts on societies distorted perception of beauty, e!ecting the young and impressionable into taking drastic action to attain an idealistic view of exterior beauty, neglecting the inner qualities which shape our being.Marks are fast and fluid, flowing with the form of the figure exaggerating its elongation and narrow frame. The muted hints of colour encourage the audience to question the beauty projected and aids in creating an almost sombre atmosphere reflecting negative emotive state. The translucent application of the media suggests not only feminine form but a distorted illusion of a fragmented figure gliding in a dreamlike state of across the picture plane. The decorative framing acts as an elaborate binding closing the figure in a restricted surround whilst echoing the aesthetic appeal of media advertising.

featured artworkThe Coolest CutSarah HodgsonEach and every person is di!erent, yet I see people wearing the same sweatshop bought clothing day after day without a single flash of personality. The keyword was vision; my vision is to see young people make their own fashion statement. This brought my attention to the idea of a book on customisation, encouraging young girls to change their clothing to stand out from the crowd. The book is named ‘The Coolest Cut’ featuring nine di!erent sets of instructions giving them ideas on how they can modify their clothing to make something new. I have created a bus poster and launch posters in order to grab more attention for the book. I have also created a storyboard that demonstrates an advertisement to grab even more attention. With books not being as popular nowadays with young people, I felt it was important to make it seem fashionable to customise your clothing. T-shirts and free flyers have been added in order to encourage more people to buy.

featured artworkCraig WatsonI have created lots of images which show the human figure in di!erent ways by using di!erent methods and techniques to capture my ideas. I have also tried to change the appearance of reality within the image, making you question exactly what you are looking at. I believe I have achieved my aim of making a mixture of various surrealist fashion images.Over the FMP, I have developed several ideas, of which you can see a small sample in this exhibition.

featured artworkBekka TootillAfter spending time with my Nana reminiscing about old times, I became interested in old family photographs and my family tree. I began to wonder about family members I have not met and how we are all related. I like how each and every photograph brings back memories whether they are happy, sad or fun times, weddings or just growing up. My final piece represents my family tree, showing how it leads from old family members to me. The layout of my piece represents how you would see a family tree and shows each generation of my family. The pleats at the bottom of my final piece represent the memories still to come.

featured artworkLisa McQueenyLooking in detail at foliage and natural landscapes inspired this piece of work.I really wanted to capture the texture of a natural living tree. I experimented using a variety of materials and fabrics that I sourced from di!erent places. Having always had a big interest in textiles I wanted to show how a di!erent range of materials could be manipulated and formed into the sculpture that has become my final outcome.

Foundation Diploma - full time

featured artworkChris CurryWhen comparing an animal of familiarity such as a deer to a creature of fantasy, we are drawn to the fictional and pretend; fascinated by unfamiliarity. However, a deer is part of our reality and its form is truly amazing because it exists unlike the creatures of our imagination. When we become familiar with something it no longer becomes something that excites us. It seems that we have spent so much time creating our own unusual creatures that we forget how extraordinary the ones that already exist are.
