May - Jane Heater

I received my first camera at the age of 7, a gift from my dad. After receiving a BS degree in chemistry, I have been an analytical chemist, a stay-at-home mom, colored pencil artist, always continuing my love of photography. Later I became more serious about photography, taking lessons, studying books and magazines, and attending the intensive career training program at Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula MT. Photography has been a great way to combine my love for art and science, since it requires both creative and analytical skills.

The images are composed so that a part of the landscape is isolated from the whole scene. They are captured using telephoto, macro, & super-macro lens, plus a variety of in-camera techniques, i.e., panning, narrow depth-of-field, and long exposure. The digital files are then minimally processed to obtain the envisioned images. These simplified images allow the details and/or graphic qualities, such as color, shape, and line, to show the often hidden beauty.

My images have been hung at the Ordover Gallery in the San Diego Natural History Museum, San Diego CA; The Center for Fine Art Photography, Fort Collins CO, and The Joseph Saxton Gallery of Photography, Canton OH.

They have received the following awards: Semifinalist in Nature’s Best Magazine’s Windland Smith Rice International Awards; Semifinalist in Nature’s Best Magazine’s Best Backyards; and appeared in COLOR, Black & White, and Rangerfinder magazines.

June - Deborah French

Photography and paper are

two passions Deborah has

fused together. She focuses

her lens on repetitious

patterns, structural shapes,

unusual textures, dissected

pieces of things and the

naked beauty of nature. These images shape the basis of

her photographic subjects she combines with handmade

paper for collage pieces and greeting card designs.

Originally from Ohio, with a degree in theatre arts,

Deborah expanded her wings and moved to California.

She discovered she wasn’t cut out to be a California girl

so she packed a bag for Houston where two good things

happened: she attended the Glassell School of Art and

met the love of her life; she enrolled in a papermaking

class and fell in love again. Next stop, Florida, where she

was contacted by a German publishing house to purchase

a series of her card designs for national publication.

In Chicago she rented studio space at paper press,

renewing her interest in papermaking. She also helped

form “the house of swing” a cooperative of local artists.

Chicago became the home for her gallery shop,

“cardcoctions” featuring local artists’ works and her line

of greeting cards.

Full circle finds her back home and the beginning of a

new chapter. Deborah holds a curiosity for architectural

elements weathered and forgotten by time and nature.

What story lies behind the emptiness of a window, a

bolted front door or abandoned building falling into

decay. Capturing the visual mystery of these images

ravaged by nature, or perhaps by man stirs her

imagination. through her eyes, we are witness to the

passage of time and the stark beauty left behind.

AVATARS: Relics from the Future (on view April 29 – July 23, 2017) will take audiences on an artistic excavation of mighty entities such as mummies and totems extracted from the innovative ceramic studio of Gary Spinosa. The figurative works in “AVATARS” combine human, animal, and architectural forms, as Spinosa seeks to materialize spiritual energy through his serenely benevolent figures. For the artist, animals contain the keys to a universal language that bonds humanity at its most primal level. These sculptures, from towering grand constructions to diminuitive “stones,” are imbued with deep sanctity and stillness, a sometimes disquieting mystery, myth, and perhaps even superstition. A review in “Cleveland Scene” noted, “Gary Spinosa's sculptures hark back to the days when art didn't just look pretty or express the individual's feelings, but served as a reminder of a higher power.” And the “Erie Times-News” of Pennsylvania offered, “Respect is the word that continues to come to mind when experiencing a Spinosa collection—respect for the materials … and for what each of us chooses to believe and how we choose to express it.”

In Praise of Women: Works from the Permanent Collection (on view April 29 – July 23, 2017) Throughout history, women have been key subject matter for artists. You'll see one such woman in Andy Warhol's Liz, on view in this important exhibit. Warhol was fascinated with Elizabeth Taylor. For him, she was much more than just an actress. She was the survivor of a near-fatal illness, and the ultimate combination of mortality, celebrity, and fame which so fascinated the artist. Celebrate the many women who are depicted in the Museum's permanent collection - on view through July 23.

The Bill and Liz Hunt Collection (on view April 29 – July 23, 2017) Bill and Liz Hunt have made collecting American ceramics a lifelong career. Liz is a retired art teacher and Bill is a retired editor from the magazine: Ceramics Monthly and former professor of ceramics from the Columbus College of Art and Design. As their lives are in the beginning stages of retirement they have moved from a beautiful home and studio on a rural setting to a smaller home which will allow them to travel. During this process, they have decided to make the Canton Museum of Art a benefactor of their American ceramic collection. This exhibition includes works gifted and on loan from their personal collection. Works on display feature ceramics by Ken Ferguson, Charles Lakofsky, Neil Tekowski, Tom Turner, Frank Susi, and a small Japanese ceramic collection showcasing a national treasure by Takuo Kato.

Mastery: Teachers from the CMA School of Art (on view April 29 – July 23, 2017) What ignites your creativity? The teachers at our CMA School of Art are inspired by many things when they create, yet they are also inspired to share their passion and knowledge with others. Our teachers ignite that much-needed creative spark within their students in a broad range of media and styles. They have all been artists and teachers for many years - you could call them veterans in their field. Talent of this kind is deserving of recognition. Celebrate the artistry from the CMA School of Art in this special exhibit on view through July 23.

The works that we have chosen for awards definitely demonstrate competence, uniqueness and individuality. They each are speaking to the viewer and calling for attention. Their spirit of creativity is strong and vibrant.

Linda Hutchinson

Visual impact is a mysterious quality. Preparation, draftsmanship, design, experience in the chosen medium and excellence of presentation all come together in a surprising way…sometimes pleasing, yet unremarkable. At other times the result goes beyond pleasing and becomes memorable. The awarded work is both splendid and memorable.
