To Their Excellencies, Baron and Baroness of Southron Gaard:

Being mindful of your oft-stated Desire that the learned Arts and Sciences should Flourish in your Barony, and being full aware of your own doughty work of tillage and husbandry of the cultural landscape in order that this might more readily happen, those Singers of Southron Gaard who style themselves the “Southern Swans” do Ask that you look kindly upon this humble Compendium of divers Melodies, and give it your Countenance.

These “Second Songs” have rather grown with that worthy music which has become known to us or been commended to us by knowledgeable persons, both within and beyond your Barony, in this last year.

We wish most especially to Acknowledge the work of the Lady Elen Benet, well known to your Excellencies, who was instrumental in first bringing this Booke into being in the year A.S. XXXX, and with your permission, we would Dedicate these Cantiones Secundae to her.

Long may she stand!

2. Come again, that I may cease to mourn, Through thy unkind disdain; For now left and forlorn, I sit, I sigh, I weep, I faint, I die In deadly pain and endless misery.

3. All the day, the sun that lends me shine By frowns doth cause me pine And feeds me with delay; Her smiles, my springs that makes my joy to grow, Her frowns the winter of my woe.

4. All the night my sleeps are fulll of dreams, My eyes are full of streams. My heart takes my delight To see the fruits and joys that some do find And mark the stormes are me assign'd.

5. But alas, my faith is ever true, Yet will she never rue Nor yield me any grace; Her eyes of fire, her heart of flint is made, Whom tears nor truth may once invade.

6. Gentle Love, draw forth thy wounding dart. Thou canst not pierce her heart; For that, I do approve By sighs and tears, more hot that are thy shafts Did tempt, while she for scanty triumph laughs.

2. Gay are the flowers, Hedgerows and ploughlands; The days grow longer in the sun, Soft fall the showers.

3. Full gold the harvest, Grain for thy labour With God must work for daily bread, Else, man, thou starvest.

4. Fast fall the shed leaves, Russet and yellow; But resting-buds are snug and safe, Where swung the dead leaves.

5. Green groweth the holly, So doth the ivy; The God of life can never die, Hope! Saith the holly

These songs can be sung individually as rounds, or together as a canon.Baroness Cecelia recommends that, when singing as a canon, everyone on each song should be together, i.e., not singing as a round. Also, note that “Hey ho, nobody at home” is shorter than the ohers, and will appear to get out of step in a canon.

2:Well can they judge of nappy ale, and tell at large a Winter tale,Climb up to the loft and turne the crabs till they be soft.Tib is all the farmer's joy and little Tom the mother's boyAll their pleasure is content and care to pay their yearly rent.

3:Jone can call by name her cowes, and deck her windowes with green boughs,Shee can wreathes and tuttyes make and trimme with plums a Bridall cake.Jacke knows what brings gain or loss and his long Flaile can stoutly tosseMake the hedge which others breake and ever thinkes what he doth speake.

4:Now you worthy Dames and Knights that study only strange delights,Though you scorn the home-spun gray and revell in your rich array,Though your tongues dissemble deepe and can your heads from danger keepeYet for all your pompe and traine, securer live the silly swaine.

3. I see a man in the Moone, Fie, man, fie! / Who's the foole now? I see a man in the Moone, Clowting of St Peter's shoone, Thou hast well drunken man, Who's the foole now?

4. I see a hare chase a hound, Fie, man, fie! / Who's the foole now? I see a hare chase a hound, Twenty mile above the ground, Thou hast well drunken man, Who's the foole now?

5. I see a goose ring a hog, Fie, man, fie! / Who's the foole now? I see a goose ring a hog, And a snayle that bite a dog, Thou hast well drunken man, Who's the foole now?

6. I see a mouse catch the cat, Fie, man, fie! / Who's the foole now? I see a mouse catch the cat, And the cheese that eat the rat, Thou hast well drunken man, Who's the foole now?

There should be a good contrast in sound between the “I see a...” lines and the “Fie, ...”/”whose a foole...” lines, e.g., a few male voices doing the “I see” and everyone else doing the “Fie”, otherwise the sense of the song is lost.

From experience, singing all three parts together does not sound good to the audience.

Our usual practice is to sing the fourth part unison, then split into three groups, each singing from the start to the end, starting when the previous group has sung four bars. Thus, generally, two groups a re singing the same words at a time. As each group ends they stop, but everyone sings the last two bars with the last group.

Singing this in just two parts with high voices on the top line and low voices on the middle line works well. When singing three parts, the bottom line needs to be sung lightly so as not to hide the interplay of the other parts.
