Canterbury Tales January 29, 2015
to Mrs. Siu (Jeremy, 2nd and Matthew, K) for the new Braun electronic forehead thermometer recently donated to the school office! What a wonderful new “tool” to help care for Canterbury’s young patients! Your generosity is deeply appreciated!
O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in
wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is
full of thy riches… Thou sendest forth thy
spirit, they are created: and thou renewest
the face of the earth. The glory of the Lord
shall endure for ever: the Lord shall rejoice in
his works. He looketh on the earth, and it
trembleth: he toucheth the hills, and they
smoke. I will sing unto the Lord as long as I
live: I will sing praise to my God while I have
my being. My meditation of him shall be
sweet: I will be glad in the Lord.
Psalm 104: 24, 30-34
to Mrs. Waibel (Joshua, 2nd) for the wonderfully delicious Honey Castella Cake which recently found its way into the Canterbury Teachers’ Workroom! The Staff enjoyed every last piece of the lovely, fluffy, treat!

to Mrs. Huang (Joseph, 6th and Grace, 4th) for participating as Canterbury’s guest speaker last Saturday in this year’s Parent Information Day! Her carefully prepared remarks were from the heart and well-received by all guests present! We thank God for the fine students – and parents –He continues to send Canterbury!
to all of the Canterbury
Students whose second quarter accomplishments were recognized during last Friday’s awards Chapel service. But grow in grace, wrote St. Peter (II Peter 3:18). And St. Paul added, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14).
to the 3rd, 5th, and 6th Grade Classes for recently returning their communiqué folders back to school on the very next day! Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men (Proverbs 22:29).

Paul Tough authored his carefully-researched
book entitled “How Children Succeed” in 2012.
He is a husband, father, and delightful writer
who has distributed acclaimed articles
concerning character and childhood through
such outlets as the New York Times magazine,
The New Yorker, and This American Life. If
we are wise, we will take to heart the important
message he has for parents and educators!
Please see the quote (on the left) from page xv
of his introduction to “How Children Succeed.”
“…a disparate congregation of
economists, educators, psychologists,
and neuroscientists have begun to
produce evidence that calls into
question many of the assumptions
behind the cognitive hypothesis (i.e.,
the dominant view that the most
important element in child development
is measurable intelligence – editor).
What matters most in a child’s
development, they say… is a very
different set of qualities, a list that
includes persistence, self-control,
curiosity, conscientiousness, grit, and
self-confidence. Economists refer to
these as non-cognitive skills,
psychologists call them personality
traits, and the rest of us sometimes
think of them as character!”
[underlining is mine – editor].

Having just recently marked the 42nd year since Roe v. Wade which legalized abortion-on-demand in
America, we do well to pause and pray for a better day – when God’s gift of life in such a precious form
will be held in loving hands rather than violently destroyed. Children are also made in His Image!

This charming story told by Bruce Hiscock, a
lover of trees, concerning a sugar maple in
Upstate New York, is a real gem! Told from the
vantage point of the tree, children learn about
seed germination, photosynthesis, root hairs,
tree tapping, sap flows, and the production of
syrup. It also tells of farms, families, and the
growth of our United States of America! Enjoy!!

Here is an opportunity to evaluate your effectiveness as a parent. Remember that discipline is not punishment! To discipline your children is to train them into an orderly way of life that
becomes second-nature to them – benefiting them for a lifetime!
A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the
heart the spirit is broken.
Proverbs 15:13 (KJV)
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the
heaven… A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a
time to dance…
Ecclesiastes 3:1,4 (KJV)
But the father said to his servants, Bring forth the best robe, and put it
on him; and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: And bring
hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: For this
my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they
began to be merry. St. Luke 15:22-24 (KJV)
