Andrew Anderson, Deputy Principal’s Report

students and Parents as Partners for learningAll Year 7 students are meant to have their Personal Learning Plans completed by the end of Week 8. Parents are asked to make a comment on the last page of their daughter’s Personal Learning Plan.

Assessment task reflection sheets will be issued at various points throughout the year and should also be kept in students’ folders issued to them at project briefings.

Please contact me should you have any enquiries regarding the Students and Parents as Partners for learning Project.

ReportsInterim reports will be issued to Years 7 and 11 at the end of Term 1; full reports will be issued for Years 8, 9 & 10 at the end of Term 2, and Years 7 and 11 start of Term 3. Parents and carers should contact me if they have any issues regarding Reports. Reports will be issued just before Parent-Teacher Night to enable informed discussions about learning to occur.

Parent teacher eveningsParent Teacher Evenings for 2017 are to be held on:• April4–Years7,11&12• June27–Years8,9&10• July18–Years7,11&12

On these evenings, parents and students are encouraged to engage in conversations with teachers about how to improve learning outcomes in each subject. All students and parents are strongly encouraged to attend.

If parents or carers require any additional information regarding Parent-Teacher Night, please contact me by email at [email protected] or telephone on 9718 1805.

Aboriginal educationThis year, the school has 23 Aboriginal students, the largest number in my nine years at the school. The school is extremely proud of its Aboriginal students and is happy that our enrolment has increased!

Mrs McLelland will be working Tuesdays in Week A to support our Aboriginal students. Mrs McLelland’s priority for Term One will be to consult with students and families in the development of Individual Education Plans, which are a government requirement for all Aboriginal students. I would urge all students and families to engage with Mrs McLelland in the development of these plans, and to contact her or myself if any support is required throughout 2017.

A morning Tea was held on Tuesday 14 march to welcome out five new Year 7 Aboriginal students and to introduce parents and carers to staff working in the Aboriginal Student Success program in 2017. The morning tea was extremely well attended. Many thanks to Mrs McLelland for organising this morning tea.

Police talks & CybersafetyI arranged for Years 7-10 to attend presentations from Ashfield Police on a range of issues relating to personal safety, safe travel to and from school and cyber-safety. The presentations were important in terms of reinforcing safety messages and in terms of developing a positive relationship with the police.

I also recently attended a police forum for schools where a presentation was given from the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner. Presenters highlighted a number of resources which they encouraged school communities to access and emphasised an ‘iParent’ resource which they encouraged all parents to access. The link for this resource is:https://esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent

I strongly urge all parents to read through this important resource!

A reminder that serious instances of cyber-bullying etc should be reported to the police for immediate action and follow-up. The school has a fantastic Police Youth Liaison Officer named Jim Bottalico, who is based as Ashfield Police Station, and may be contacted on 9797 4099.

early Commencement HsCAs part of our commitment to innovate and provide the best learning possible for students at the school, Year 10 students for the second year are being provided with an opportunity to complete one HSC subject over Years 10 and 11. Business Services is the subject offered to students to complete on HSC subject early in. This is a practical, vocational education subject taught at school by staff within the HSIE faculty. The advantage to undertaking this subject early is that it will reduce Year 12 workload by about 20% and enable greater time to be spent on remaining Year 12 subjects.

Personal BestThe Personal Best program was introduced into the school in 2015 to build student knowledge and resilience about age relevant issues, and to promote positive mental health. For example, Year 7 examines issues related to bullying and friendship; Year 8 examines cyber-safety and Personal Relationships; Year 9 examines resilience and decision-making, and Year 10 examines planning for the future and mental health.

Successfully completing this program leads to a positive entry being made onto both a student’s record and her yearly report.

Would you please encourage your daughter to complete her Personal Best program in 2017 and to raise any issues derived from the program requiring follow-up?

Students are given an hour each week during Thursday and Friday DEAR to complete Personal Best; the school’s expectation is that everyone will complete it. Students involved in other DEAR programs such as Mentoring are exempted however.

Ongoing Issues

Travel to and from SchoolThere continue to be issues with students not paying attention walking to and from school - listening to ipods, talking on iphones, and disregarding traffic signals and other safety related issues around them.

Would you please continue to revisit this issue with your daughters and remind them to be alert at all times when traveling to and from school, to not have any valuables such as iphones visible, to observe all traffic light commands and to travel on main roads and in groups where possible.

ValuablesPlease assist the school be ensuring your daughter does not bring valuables (eg large amounts of money, jewellery, expensive electronic devices / iphones) to school. Remind her never to leave her phone or wallet unattended for any reason, especially when in the Library or playground or at sporting events.

If a valuable is stolen, there is nothing the school can do about it unless witnesses come forward identifying the person responsible. Students have to take responsibility for their belongings at school as they would have to in the real world.

Deputy Principal

Our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

The survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours on May 3rd (week 2 of term 2). Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. Questions are based on the following areas:

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday, April 28. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

Additional information is at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/images/TTFM_Student_Survey_FAQs_Parent_and_Carers_T12017.pdf

Eliva Andiamora, past student, was our Special Guest speaker, and her words were inspirational to the students following in her footsteps to a post–school tertiary pathway.

Lili Shapiro, speaking on behalf of the High Achievers of 2016, proved her skill as a wordsmith who will go far in that domain!

We had many 2016 HSC graduates with us on the day, receiving a plaque and certificate to mark their attainment of a high band (Band 5 or 6) result in their HSC program of study. There were over 50 students eligible for this award from the class of 2016.

International women’s Day Assembly 2017The International Women’s Day Assembly #BeBoldforChange was one of the finest examples we have seen of a student lead assembly to mark this annual event. Congratulations to Ms Jenkins and SRC students for your fabulous efforts; it was an inspirational morning with clear take away messages for young women about education, health, family, opportunity and equity. Backed up with the White Elephant stall and Bake Sale over two lunchtimes, sees Canterbury Girls ready to make a substantial donation to Lillian’s Refuge for young women.

sRC’s white elephant stall and lillian Howell ProjectOur school celebrated International Women’s Day on Monday 6th of March (IWD was officially the 8th) with the theme #BEBOLDFORCHANGE. The SRC wanted to support Lillian’s - an important women and girls refuge. Staff and students donated good quality pre-loved clothing and other items which were sold to enthusiastic shoppers and bargain hunters during lunchtime. The SRC raised $280 from the stall which together with all remaining clothing will be donated directly to Lillian’s. It’s all about girls helping girls!

The Lillian Howell Project (Lillian’s) is a specialist homelessness service providing medium to long term 24 hour, on-site gender specific supported housing for up to 13 young women and girls from the age of 13 to 17 years. Lillian’s has been operating in Sydney’s Inner West since 1988. Lillian’s aim is to provide these young women, who are survivors of child sexual abuse, neglect or family violence, with a stable and non-judgemental environment. For over 27 years, we have provided this service in a building built specifically for this purpose.

lil’ mS adventure is a vibrant musical which follows the adventures of a group of school girls as they are lost in the australian bush. they have to bond together and demonstrate their ability to work as a team in order to find their way out of the bush. throughout the course of their adventure they learn something about themselves and the differences between the ‘types’ you find in any school. ultimately they learn the differences are largely only surface deep and it is the commonalities which are far more relevant.

Canterbury Girls High school Inaugural Film Festival - ‘Being Human’Congratulations to all of the entrants in our Film Festival which took place on Friday 10th March in the Cantabrian Hall. What better way to finish the week than to take the weight off your feet, chill out and munch your way through delicious freshly popped popcorn courtesy of the P & C. All of that accompanied by some insightful, artistic and thought provoking films focused upon the idea of what it means ‘Being Human’. It was an entertaining and delightful viewing organised by the school’s P & C and this addition to our school calendar was both stimulating and moving.

This inaugural competition asks film makers to find the commonalities for all people and to use the camera’s eye to enable the audience to look afresh at what makes up our world and our interactions with other people. There were many commendable entries and two winners from the CGHS Film Festival will now go through and represent our school in the next stage of the festival in April when entries from a number of the local High Schools will be judged.

Year 7 Camp

Nerves + excitement + exhaustion + hunger + a little bit of nausea is a short summary of how camp felt for me. Recently Year Seven went to Milsons Island for our school camp and we had a great time. We got to do many fun activities such as raft building, bush walking, archery, kayaking and some others but one of the best parts was meeting new people and making new friends. On camp while I mostly stayed with my group of friends I’d been sitting with at school I certainly did become more, let’s say, chummy with classmates and other year sevens. I was lucky enough to be in a cabin with one of my friends but even though I was just with my friend and some classmates I am now a lot closer with the other two girls in my cabin.

Sleep is not a big part of camp while yes they say lights out at 10:00pm the majority of girls won’t asleep until 1:30am or even 2:00am, I am so sorry to you teachers I know you were tired. In conclusion the activities were fun, sleep was to a minimum, food was better than most camps actually and everyone knows each other just a little bit better. So thankyou teachers and camp staff.

Parents and students met again with the Principal and Deputy Principals over morning tea and coffee in the Cantabrian Hall.

This is an informal gathering enabling families to reconnect with each other and the school and also to welcome the new parents and students of Year 7.

Everyone was very pleased to meet up again and to hear of the various achievements of students from an ATSI background especially in the visual arts, dance and drama.

Ms Holden announced that Marie Ikonomou in Year 10 has been accepted into the NSW Public Schools Dance Company and this was greeted with delighted applause.

As the year progresses our students will perform in other events at school – in the school musical “Little Miss Adventure” – and at Regional and State level. Thank you to Ms Holden and Mr Anderson for their commitment and vision supporting this expanding, important program.

Our Year 12 Hospitality students provided the catering for the High Achievers Assembly. They were responsible for making an array of sandwiches, quiches, fruit platters and finger food to serve to the high achieving students and their guests. The Hospitality students were able to put into practice the principles they have learnt throughout the course in preparing a variety of foods.

It has been a busy start of the year in the music department with students performing at various events. We started the year with all time record number students participating in band and choir at the High Achievers assembly. This was quickly followed with performances at Open Night where the band performed a variety of pieces in the Cantabrian Hall as well as elective music students performing sets in the music room to show off our multitalented instrumentalists. This year has also seen the formation of the ukulele ensemble where we have already learnt two pieces to perform! The choir is bigger and better than ever who have already auditioned to be in school spectacular this year! The musical band has been practicing a record amount of music in this years musical and are excited to rehearse with the actors to see the whole project come together The next event for the band is a morning ANZAC ceremony at Campsie on the 25th of April. There will be a rehearsal in the afternoon on the 24th of April to finalise repertoire and to organise equipment needed. 2017 is shaping up to be a big year for music!

PDHPeIn 8A’s PDHPE lessons with Ms. Turnbull, we have focused on essential skills in the form of a circuit. We are developing good techniques in a fun way, and competing against ourselves via numerous activities. These activities include, dribbling and shooting a basketball, kicking a football at a target, ball control (hockey) and sprinting in a diagonal formation. We have been doing this through the course of two lessons so far, and have learned many skills that will help us in Grade and recreational sport.

Aboriginal Cultural Awareness ProgramMembers of our school community were privileged to be able to attend Sydney TAFE Eora College Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Program.

We attended an interactive workshop and a field trip to locations of significance to Aboriginal people and culture conducted by our knowledgeable and engaging facilitators, Pam Touma and Drew Roberts.

We emerged with a better knowledge and understanding of the current social, political, economic and cultural issues that are impacting upon outcomes for Aboriginal people today and how to accommodate them in effective service delivery.

We developed an appreciation of the depth, diversity and complexities of Aboriginal cultures in Australia. We also explored the concept of Dreaming and spirituality, the impacts of colonisation and key government policies and practices relating to Aboriginal people.

Year 12 CAFS (Community & Family Studies) have just begun Core 3: Parenting and Caring. During this term students have learnt about the different types of social parents and their implications. To help apply their knowledge, students have become foster parents to their new baby plants. Their role as a foster parent is to care for the wellbeing of their plant for a temporary period of time until it can be adopted to the most suitable applicant.

Will Year 12 be able to give this baby plant all it needs to survive and thrive?

IwD Young women’s leadership Conference at state ParliamentOn Thursday, 9th March, the Vice President - Stella and President of the SRC – Ella, attended the International Women’s Day Leadership Conference at Parliament House.

This conference involved listening to a successful and accomplished keynote speaker, who is now the CEO of a major Australian law firm and who is actively eradicating gender prejudice and discrimination in the workplace. Those attending were also able to view the lower and upper house in session and participate in a Q&A with many of the female MP’s from the NSW State Government. The day was a memorable experience that enriched our understanding of women in parliament and the important role they play in helping young aspiring women as well as making strides toward gender equality.
