    helps you to capture shots after darkwithout using a tripod. lt does this bypumping up the ISO and combiningconsecutive shots to create a 'stableimage'. HDR Backlight Control helpswhen shooting something with brightand dark areas in your frame. lt firesthree bracketed exposures andcombines them in-camera to tr y andimprove shadow and highlight detail.Both modes only record one JPEG .

Now allCanon D-SLRs are ready to shoothome movies- this is found onthe Mode Dial on most cameras,but on newer models it can haveits own switch; on the EOS 6500,Movie mode is initiated by theOn/Off/Movie mode switch under

    Full Auto is fine for quick snaps but offerslittle control - this shot is underexposed, thef/6.3 aperture gives very limited depth offield, and white balance is a bit too cool

    FULL AUTO/A+W hether your EOScamera has Full Auto(green square) or A+ (SceneIntelligent Auto) mode, theyboth work in a similar way-you concentrate on framingyour pictures, while the automode analyses the scene andautomatically picks the bestsettings to capture it. In A+ itwill also set an 'Auto' PictureStyle, which makes fineadjustments to colours. So,you simply aim at your sceneor subject, press the shutterbutton halfway and wait foran AF point to highligh t andbeep to confirm you'veachieved focus, then fullypress the button to take theshot. Your camera sets

    everything from exposurebrightness to ISO tometering, and will alsochange the autofocus modefrom One-Shot AF to AI ServoAF if your subject moves. Theflash might pop up if you 'reshooting indoors, it 's dark orlighting conditions are low.

    Full Auto/ A+ is a goodall-rounder fo r shooting'everything', but of course,like the Image Zone picturemodes,you have no controlor ability to tweak settings ifyour shots are too bright ordark, if the flash pops up, ifthe ISO is too high or low, of ifthe aperture is too wide orthe shutter speed is too fast,or white balance a little of f.

    DIFFERENT EOS D-SLR MODE DIALS

    Entry-level cameras have the mostauto shooting modes as beginnerswill be comfortable with thepicture modes found on compactcameras they've upgraded from.

    Mid-range models have the usualImage and Basic Zone modes, theCreative Zone of P, Tv, Av, M andB - and also c fo r registering acustom mode of your choosing.

    Semi-pro models forego theImage Zone modes altogether, bu toffer custom exposure modes fo rcreating your own presets fordifferent shooting scenarios.

    The higher-spec the EOS, thefewer shooting modes you get.Note that lD-series cameras don'teven have a Mode Dial - and onlyhave P, Av, Tv and M modes! ~

    ExposureCompensationRegardless of which shootingmode you use, your camera cansometimes set inaccurate exposurecompared to the picture you'reenvisaging. To get around this. in P.Av and Tv modes, you can adjustExposure Compensation inone-third stop steps (up to+/-3 or 5 stops, depending on yourEOS camera). On 0-SLRs likethe 5500/ 6000, hold down theAv+/- button and turn the top dial- or on larger EOS 0-SLRs like the600/70 , use the rear dial. Watchthe exposure level indicator and theindex mark on the top or rear LCO ,or through the viewfinder. Tobrighten exposures, turn the dialto the right; to darken exposures,turn the dial to the left. Set between13 and 1 stop of compensation, takeanother shot, and see if the resultis darker or brighter enough.

    he P (Program Au to Exposure)mode is suited to those of youtrying to break out of the Full Auto/

    A+ modes, but you 're not confidentto know which aperture or shutterspeed to set. In P mode your EOS0 -SLR pairs aperture and shutterspeed, but you can adjust them byusing Program Shift . If you want awider aperture or faster shutterspeed, turn the top dial to the right.If you wan t a narrower aperture orslower shutter speed, turn the topdial to the left.     Aperture choice and depth of fieldThe wider the aperture, theshallower the depth of f ield- or themore blurred the background. At a wideaperture of f/4, everything behind theforeground manhole is blurred.The

    background gets progressively sharperas the aperture narrows and depth offield increases, and so at f/22, both theforeground and background houses arein focus and sharp.

    Dial (or Cl, C2 and C3 on somemodels), then you can register your

    preferred shooting setup.Thesecustom modes can be helpful if youwant to quickly access your setups for,say, landscapes,wildlife and portraits .These custom settings work much likean advanced version of Image Zonemodes, enabling you to , for instance,set the ISO high, burst mode,AI Servo,Auto AF Points Selection, and a wideaperture ready for fast-movingsubjects - then register these settingsunder the C camera user setting.

    ISO speedsettingsIn the Creative Zone, you can set theISO manually. This is helpful as it'sup to you how high or low it needs togo . If you need to obtain a fast shutterspeed (eg 1/1000 sec), and you 'realready at your widest aperture (egf/ 2 .8) , then increase the ISO from 100to 40 0, 800, 1600 or 3200, until youhave the desired shutter speed. Bearin mind that high ISO settings cancreate unwanted noise, but it 's betterto have a noisy sharp shot then ablurred less noisy shot. If you want aslower shutter speed, keep the ISO at100. If you're at you're narrowestaperture (eg f/22), and the shutterspeed still isn't slow enough tocapture movement in, for instance,water in a landscape, then you'll needto use an ND filter. Always use a tripodfo r slow shutter speeds shots!

    Auto Depth ofField (A-DEP)F und on older EOS cameras likethe 11000, 400, 4000,4500,5000 and 5500, the uniqueA-DEP (Automatic Depth of Field AutoExposure) mode uses all the AF point sto detect the subject or scene, andthen set a suitably narrow apertu re (egf/ 16) to obtain the maximum depth offield for a sharp shot from front to backof the frame. Good for landscapephotos. Use a tripod as shutter speedscould be slow if your ISO is at 100.

    When Bulb mode is selected, theshutter remains open as long asyou press the shutter. B modeis brilliant for night shots when youneed exposures more than 30 secs(the maximum available in P, Av,Tv and M modes), as you can setexposures minutes (or hours!) long.On some cameras Bulb isn't foundon the Mode Dial, but is selected bysetting Tv to 'more than' 30 secs.

    When to dial M for ManualBeing able to controlaperture and shutterspeed independently hasdist inct advantages.Semi-auto modes can getconfused when shoot ing inmixed lighting, such as whenyour subject is against a verybright or dark background,for example.Or you mightwant to deliberately shoot

    your subject in silhouetteand expose for the bright.sky behind it rather than thedarker foreground area.

    When using a flashgun orstudio lights, Manual modegives you free reign to setwhichever aperture andshutter speed you like fo r thecrispest shot (f/11 at 1/ 200sec, for example),then

    simply adjust the poweroutput of the flash until youget the desired exposure. Infact. the shutter speed haslittle effect on the exposureof the subject as this isdetermined by the durationof the flash (typically 1/ 1000sec or faster). but it doesestablish the exposure of thebackground ambient light.
