Mercury Battery Loading

Before using your Canonet G-II I ,load it with the mercury battery.

To open cover of the battery com-partment, insert fingernail in openslot, sliding cover in direction ofarrow. By using a slight pull out-ward, the cover will hinge open.

Insert the battery on the tab inthe compartment.• Be sure the mercury batteryis inserted only in the correctdirection.• A 1.3v M20 (#625) mercurybattery should be used—equivalentto Mallory PX-625, Eveready EPX-625.Press cover to close.

Replacing BatteryWhen replacing the mercury bat-tery, open the cover of the mer-cury battery compartment andpull out the tab. The batterycan then be easily removed.• When the camera will not beused for long period, remove thebattery.

Turn the automatic/manual aperture ring,releasing it from " A " position, and set it formanual control of aperture. In this case,any f/stop can be set.

In case of Canonet G-III 17Press the battery check button (colored red).If the blue lamp lights up, the battery hassufficient power. Otherwise, the batteryshould be replaced.

In case of Canonet G-III 19Look through the viewfinder; then press thebattery check button. If the exposureindicator inside the viewfinder positions inthe blue zone, the battery has sufficient power.Otherwise, it should be replaced.• The battery check button will not lightup at temperatures of -15°C(5°F) or under.Camera will work, however, if the batteryhas sufficient power.• The Canonet G-III 17 has no blue zone.

Film Loading

Canon's Exclusive Quick-Loading (QL) mecha-nism in the Canonet G-III accepts anystandard 35mm film roll in cartridge. Whenloading new film, always avoid direct sun-light.

To release the latch of the back cover, raisethe film rewind crank, and pull it all the

5 way up.

Open the cover fully. When the back coveris opened, the QL cover opens simultaneously.Face the film cartridge as illustrated in linedrawing inside back cover, and insert it intothe cartridge compartment. Push crank backto its normal position.

Lay the t ip of the film leader above the"amber" film set mark.

The QL cover automatically opens andcloses with the back cover, Do not touchthe QL cover.

Bring down the QL cover to hold the filmin place by closing the back cover.

Look through the sprocket window to see ifthe film is correctly engaged with thesprocket,

if the film is sagging, turn the film rewindcrank clockwise.

Close the back cover completely. 6

Pre-Settings

Wind the film advance lever three or fourtimes until it stops. The first frame is nowautomatically in position.

Checking Correct Film LoadingThe film is properly loaded and advancedif the film transport indicator flickers whenyou wind the film advance lever.

Checking Proper Winding Film (GIII 17)The film is wound up if the color of thefilm wound-up indicator turns red. Theindicator turns white when the shutter isreleased.7

Film Speed SettingImmediately after loading f i lm, be sure toset the ASA film speed scale in the properposition by pressing the notched film speedsetting lever with your fingernail, matchingthe proper film speed number with the indexof the ASA film speed indicator window.

The higher the film speed number, themore sensitive the film; the lower it is, the

less sensitive. The ASA 200 f i lm is betterfor shooting at low light level, than theASA 100 film.

Automatic Electric Eye Photography

For Automatic Electric Eye photography, setthe aperture ring at " A " position.

The EE mechanism is fully coupled to theASA film speed, the shutter speed and theaperture.

Shutter Speed AdjustmentTurn the shutter speed ring, and match thefilm speed setting lever with the simpleexposure symbol of either sunny ,cloudy

or indoor .With ASA 100 film forexample, the shutter speeds are set at 1/500sec. for sunny ,1/125 sec. for cloudy

and 1/30 sec. for indoor

While looking through the viewfinder, turnthe focusing lever. The subject is in focuswhen the double image merges into oneprecise image in the center of the viewfinder.

Checking the Exposure IndicatorPoint the camera at the subject and checkthe position of the exposure indicator insidethe viewfinder.Press the shutter button if the indicatoris inside the proper exposure range.

• The shutter cannot be released if theexposure indicator is either over or under

11 the exposure warning mark.

• If the indicator points to the underexposure warning mark, turn the shutterspeed ring clockwise until the indicator movesto the proper exposure range, or use CanoliteD or other flash units.• If the indicator points to the over exposurewarning mark, turn the shutter speed ringcounterclockwise until the indicator movesto the proper exposure range, or use an NDfilter.

Compose the Picture within the Frame.The field-of-view which will appear on thefilm can be seen within the rectangular frame.

Press the Shutter Button gently to snappicture.

Automatic Flash Photography—Using Canolite D

The Canolite D is an optional electronicflash unit with direct contact exclusivelydesigned for the Canonet G-III. There isabsolutely no necessity for worrying aboutguide numbers. Night or indoor photographyis now as easy as daylight photography usingthe 'Canolite D.

By simply attaching the Canolite D, thecamera, while set at "A", is switched overto the automatic flash control circuit, andthe proper f/stop corresponding to the shoot-ing distance is automatically set.

Using Conventional Flash Units

The Canonet G-III has a socket for con-ventional type flash untis.Attach flash unit to the accessory shoe ofthe camera, and connect the cord of theflash unit to the flash socket of the camera.

Select correct blue number (14, 20, 28)*engraved on the aperture ring, matching withguide number of flash unit.With flash unit, set shutter speed at 1/30 sec.With electronic flash unit, any shutter speedcan be used.

• Do not use flash bulb (or unit) withfollowing types of film because it does notcouple properly.Flash bulb of guide number 14 with ASA25 film, guide number 20 with ASA 800,and guide number 28 with ASA 400 or higherspeeds,,

• In flash photography using a conventionalelectronic flash unit or flash bulb when theproper f/stop is set according to the guidenumber, there is a heavy drain on the mercurybattery. Therefore, be sure to return the aper-ture ring to "A" position after shooting.

• When the subject is too far or too close,shutter button cannot be depressed.

Manual Control of Aperture

For manual control of aperture, release aper-ture ring from "A" position. The shutterspeed and f/stop can be freely set for achiev-ing specialized technical effects. With theCanonet G-III , special effects in high key orlow key can be obtained in the same manneras with high-grade cameras.

• In manual exposure control, the positionof the exposure indicator is in the upperred mark.

Using Self-timer

The Canonet G-III has a built-in self-timer.To operate the self-timer, turn the self-timerlever in the direction of the arrow until itstops. The shutter will be released approxi-mately 10 seconds after the shutter buttonhas been pressed.

• The self-timer also operates when takingpictures with flash units.• If the self-timer lever is set, do not returnit to normal position. It is automaticallyreturned, after the picture is snapped.

Bulb Exposure

Bulb exposure is used when taking pictureswith long time exposures.Release the aperture ring manually from "A"to the desired f/stop.

Set the shutter speed ring at "B" position,at the same time, pressing down on the bulbsetting lever.

Press the shutter button gently.The shutter will remain open as long as theshutter button is pressed and will close whenthe shutter button is released.

• When an extended time exposure is beingmade, use the Canon Release, and tripod,to avoid blurred pictures.

Film Rewinding

When the film reaches the end, and the filmadvance lever stops, rewind the film intothe cartridge as soon as possible. Be surenot to open the back cover before rewinding.Otherwise, the entire roll will be exposed,and ruined since the film will be exposedwithin the camera.

To rewind, press in the rewind button.

Raise the film rewind crank, turning it inthe direction of the arrow, until the film iscompletely rewound in the cartridge.

Watch the film transport indicator, and stoprewinding when red and white lines ceaseto flicker.

Film Removing

Open the back cover by pulling up the rewindcrank fully, and remove the film cartridge.

Canolite D : Exclusive electronic flash unitdesigned for use with Canonet G-III withdirect contact for cordless type. When per-forming flash photography, it is not necessaryto worry about guide numbers or to calculatef/stops, Automatic setting of proper f/stopis possible as the EE circuit is coupled to theshooting distance. Canolite D is powered bytwo 1.5v alkaline AA batteries.

Flash-Auto Mechanism for Other Flash Units :Aperture openings coupled to shooting dis-tance at guide numbers 14, 20, 28 (m) withASA 100. Shutter button is locked whenit is outside the coupling range.

Film Loading : Canon-developed QL (QuickLoading) mechanism. Accepts any stand-ard 35mm film in cartridge.

Film Advance : Single-stroke 127°. Film trans-port and wound-up indicators built in.
