EachMonday, the athletic communications officenominates candidates. Athletic trAiningstrength And conditioning

The primary objective of thestrength and conditioning programatCanisiusCollege is for eachath-lete to stay injury free while assist-ing them in reaching their maxi-mal level of performance. This isaccomplishedthroughanaggressiveapproach to sport specific training.Great care is taken to concentrateon the joint areas that are mostsusceptibletoinjury,musclegroupsthatareinvolvedintheactivityandconditioningspecificenergysystemsaccording to the demands of theathlete’sspecificsport. Developing linear speed, agil-ity, range of movement, absolutestrength, functional strength andsportspecificpowerisimportantinhelpingtheathletereachtheirhigh-est potential. Along with strengthtraining,ahighlevelofconditioningisrequiredforoptimalperformance.To accomplish this, we implementhigh-performance metabolic condi-tioning as a foundation of totalpreparation. The strength and conditioningstaffworkstonotonlyenhanceeachathlete’s strength and conditioninglevels, but provide an environmentconducive to the development ofdiscipline and leadership skills forreachingoptimumphysicalpotentialandmentaltoughness.

In July2007, JeffLeewasnamed the head strengthandconditioningcoachatCanisius College. In thisrole, he is responsible foroverseeing the design andimplementation of thestrength trainingandcon-ditioningprogramsfortheschool’s16 intercollegiateteams. Lee joined theCanisius staff after serv-ingatwo-yearstintastheassistantstrengthandcon-ditioning coach at YaleUniversity.There,the26-

yearoldLeeworkedwith11oftheBulldogs’var-sityteamsandservedastheprimarystrengthandconditioningcoachforthemen’sandwomen’sicehockey teams. He was responsible for designingandimplementingspeed,strengthandcondition-ing programs for the hockey teams, while alsooverseeing the department’s student work-studystaff. PriortohistimeatYale,LeewasanassistantatTheCitadelinCharleston,S.C.Heworkedpri-marilywiththeschool’smen’sbasketballprogramasheearnedhismaster’sdegreeinexercisescience.He also worked at the United States OlympicEducation Center in Marquette, Mich., wherehe developed and implemented Olympic-basedstrengthtrainingfor23eliteamateurboxers. Lee received his undergraduate degree inphysicaleducationfromWesternIllinoisin2003.AmemberofNationalStrengthandConditioningAssociation and the Collegiate Strength andConditioningCoachesAssociation,hestartedhiscareer as an intern at BinghamtonUniversity inAugust2003. LeeandhiswifeAshley,weremarriedJuly27,2007.ThecouplecurrentlyresidesinBuffalo.

Center for Athletic Training Canisius College opened the Center forAthletic Training in the summer of 2007. Thestate-of-the art facility, located in the KoesslerAthletic Center, is used for game and practicepreparation and is fully equipped for acute andlong-terminjuryrehabilitation.TheCenterhous-es private offices for both teamof theCollege’steam physicians and full-time Certified AthleticTrainers who serve Canisius’ student-athletes.AnadjacentHydrotherapyareacomplimentstheCenter in providing the highest quality care forthosedonningtheBlueandGold. The Griffs have two physicians who providecare on a regular basis to the college’s student-athletes. Head Team Physician, Dr. Rajiv Jain,covershomeicehockeygamesandvisitscampusbi-weekly for general medicine examinations.Dr.KeithStube,teamorthopedicsurgeon,isoncampusweeklyandcoversmen’sbasketballhomegames. Six full-time Certified Athletic Trainersprovide coverage to all 16 varsity intercollegiatesportscoverageinboththeirtraditionalandnon-traditionalseasons. CanisiushasaCAATEaccreditedundergradu-ateathletictrainingprogram,whichpreparesstu-dentsfortheNATABoardofCertificationexam.Athletic training students gain practical experi-ence alongside Staff Athletic Trainers, helpingcoverGoldenGriffin sports and are an integralpartofthesportsmedicineteam.

Rajk enters hissecond year as amemberof the athletic trainingstaffatCanisiusCollege. BeforejoiningtheCanisius athletic trainingstaff,RajkwasaphysicanextenderforExcelsiorOr-thopaedics Physical andOccupationalTherapy.AtSweetHomeHighSchool,Rajkwas an assistant ath-letic trainer,workingwiththe football, hockey andlacrosseteams.

Rajk has worked at the CAN/AMhockey camps in Guelph, Ont. in 2005 and2006. Demske Sports Complex•The Rev. James M. Demske, S.J. Koessler Athletic Center•Builtin1968,theKAChousesboththephysi-caleducationandathleticdepartmentsandisthesiteofintercollegiate,intramural,recreationandlocalhighschoolsportingevents.•TheKACconsistsof amulti-purpose gymna-sium, swimming pool, the brand new CenterofAthleticTraining,aweightroomandseveralclassroomsandoffices.

•Thegymnasiumunderwentafaceliftthatwascompleted in 2002. The ceiling was removed,and thewallswere refinishedandpainted.Thebleachers were replaced with 1,100 chair backseatsandnewbleachers,bringingthecapacityto2,176. The floor was refinished and repainted,andanew sound systemwas installed. Inaddi-tion, the lightingwasupgraded andwiringwasadded to allow for televised games, while themen’s basketball, women’s basketball and vol-leyball locker rooms were also renovated.Thefinaltouchwastheadditionofnewscoreboards,oneofwhichlistsindividualplayers’pointsandfouls.

President of Canisius Collegesince1993,Rev.VincentM.Cooke,S.J. has successfullymovedCanisiusintothetopranksofcomprehensivecollegesanduniversitiesinthenorth-east by raising the bar for academicstandards,capitalimprovementsandfundraising. Inthelast14yearsunderFatherCooke’s leadership, Canisius hasinvested nearly $120 million in 17capital projects on the Main Streetcampus. Canisius will remain in the forefront of undergraduate sci-enceeducationwiththecreationofaworld-class,interdisciplinaryscience center in what is presently the HealthNow building andparkingpavilionat1901MainStreet.The college is scheduled toacquirethebuildinginlate2007andplanstobeginconstructionofthesciencecenterassoonaspossibleafteracquisitionofthesite. CampusrenovationscompletedduringFatherCooke’stenurealso includeacompleterenovationofthecollege’ssignatureclass-roombuilding,OldMain,LyonsHallandtheconstructionoftwotownhousecomplexes,theVillageTownhousesonMainStreetandtheDelavanTownhousesonWestDelavanAvenue.Canisius’new-estresidence,EastwoodHall,openedinfall2005andisnowhometo286freshmanandsophomorestudents. Father Cooke wasalso recognized by The Buffalo News as one of its OutstandingCitizens for 2001 and named the 2003 RenaissanceMan of theYear by theBuffaloRenaissanceFoundation (BRF). In 2004,hereceived theLibertyBellAward,presentedby theBarAssociationof Erie Country to recognize service to the community and wasinducted into the Junior Achievement Business Leadership HallofFameas its 2004Educatorof theYear. Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J.President

Ellen O. Conley, PhD, amemberoftheCanisiusCommunitysince1970,wasnamedvicepresidentforstudentaffairsin1998.Oneofher many accomplishments in hernew role includes spearheading theupgrade of the athletics program atthecollege. Dr. Conley earned a bache-lor’sdegreefromSlipperyRockStateCollege (1967), advanced education

degreesfromtheUniversityofPittsburgh(1968)andBuffaloState(1973)andadoctorateinhighereducationfromtheUniversityatBuffalo(1981). DuringhertenureasdeanoftheCollegeofArtsandSciences,Dr.ConleysupportedtheformationoftheSchoolofEducationandHumanServices,developedamentoringprogramfornewfaculty,initiated the development ofmajors in criminal justice and envi-ronmentalscienceandguidedtheinitiativetoimplementaMasterof Science in Organizational Communication and Development.Shealsoestablished theFineArtsDepartmentandfacilitated thedevelopment of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into theArtsCanisiusprogram. While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of theschool’sgraduateeducationprogramtotheCanadianmarketandguidedtheimplementationoftheMasterinSportAdministration. From1987-89,Dr.Conleywastheassistantdirectorofathleticsforwomen’ssportsandfinancialaid,andfrom1987-90,shewastheathleticscholarshipcoordinator.Underherdirection,thewomen’sathleticprogramwasformedandgrewfromoneclublevelteamtosevenvarsity teams. Inaddition, she implementedandmonitoredan athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-rev-enueproducingsports. From1982-1990Dr.ConleyservedaschairoftheundergraduatePhysicalEducationMajorProgramandCoordinatorofthePhysicalEducationGraduate Program. In 1989, she developed alternativecurricular tracks for physical educationmajors to enhance enroll-ment, and in1986, she co-wrote theNewYorkStateProfessionalPreparationCouncil’spositionpaper for“StrengtheningTeachinginNewYorkState.”

SincetakingoveratCanisius,sixathleticteamswonconferenceor regionalchampion-ships,withthe2007softballteamadvancingtotheNCAATournamentfortheninthtimein13 seasonswhile the2006men’s lacrosseteamearnedashareofitsfirstregular-seasonMAAC Championship. The 2006 volleyballteam set a program record for victories, andthe2007baseballsquadmadeitsfirstMAACTournament appearance since 1994. The synchronized swimming programwonits10thconsecutiveECACChampionshipin2007.Thirty-fourstudent-athleteshave earned all-leaguehonors,ninehavewon conferenceplayer orrookieoftheyearawardsand14werevotedtoall-tournamentteams. Ontheacademiclevelduringthepasttwoyears,141student-athleteswerenamedtotheMAACAll-AcademicHonorRoll,while24hockeyplayersmadethe AtlanticHockey All-Academic Team and eight synchronized swimmerswere honored asU.S. Synchro Academic All-Americans. CoSIDAAll-Academic.Startingduringthe2007-08 academic year, he willbegin a two-year term onthe NCAA Division IManagementCouncil.ACanisius graduate andformer assistant athleticdirector at the school,Maherspentsevenyearsatthe University at Buffaloand served as the Bulls’interim athletic directorfrom2003-05.

During his tenure as the interim athletic director at Buffalo, Maherhelped UB Athletics oversee $3.6 million in capital improvements to itsathleticfacilities,restructuretheschool’sBlue&WhiteClubfunddriveforathletics,whichgenerated$1millionduringthe2003-04season,anddevelopmarketingcampaignswhichincreasedattendanceatathleticevents. Healsooversawthedevelopmentofthemen’sbasketballprogram,whichsetaschoolrecordforvictoriesandearnedthefirstpostseasonbidinschoolhistory with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament.Underhiswatch,theBulls’RPIincreasedfrom284in2003toashighas34duringthe2004-05season. Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College footballteamfrom1985-88andearnedAll-Americahonorablementionhonorsasasenior.Hereceivedhisbachelor’sdegreeinphysicaleducationfromCanisiusin1989andhismaster’sdegreeinsportmanagementfromEastStroudsburgUniversityin1990.FollowinganinternshipwiththeNewYorkKnicks,MaherreturnedtoCanisiusin1991,becomingtheassistantathleticdirectorforcom-pliancein1994. He became the director of compliance at theUniversity atBuffalo in1998,wherehemoveduptheranksandwasnamedseniorassociateathleticdirector in2002. In that role,hemanaged theday-to-dayoperationsof theDivision ofAthletics, including the direct supervision of Buffalo’s footballand men’s and women’s basketball programs, in addition to the office ofcomplianceandtheofficeofstudent-athleteservices. JohnMaddockisinhis27thyearwithCanisiusCollege athletics and his11th as associate athleticdirectorforexternalaffairs.Originally hired as theGolden Griffins’ sportsinformation director, thenative ofWashington, Ill.,wasnamedanassistantath-letic director prior to the1987-88seasonandmovedintohiscurrentpositionin1997. Maddock is respon-sible for corporate part-nerships, marketing andpromotions, licensing, the

Blue&GoldClubandticketsales. The52-year-oldMaddockoversawtheopera-tionofthedepartmentofathleticsduringSpring2005beforeBillMaherwasnamedthedirectorofathletics.MaddockalsoassistedtheMAACwithplansforits25thAnniversarycelebrationduringthe2005-06athleticseason. He chaired the search committee for theGriffs’headfootballcoachin2000andmen’ssoc-cercoachin1998.HeservesontheHallofFameandtheMLKAwardsSelectionCommitteesandoversaw the development of the athletic depart-ment’s current logo. He was also instrumentalinplanningtheseason-long100-yearanniversarycelebrationformen’sbasketballin2003-04. Maddock arrived at Canisius in July 1981afterspendingtwo-and-a-halfyearsas theadmin-istrative assistant to the athletic director atBrockport State College. Prior to his job atBrockport, he was the ticket manager for theAtlantaBravesTriple-AfarmclubinRichmond,Va. A graduate of Western Illinois University,Maddock received his bachelor’s degree in rec-reationandparkadministrationin1976andhismaster’sdegreeinathleticadministrationin1978.InadditiontohisdutiesatCanisius,MaddockisanactivememberoftheNationalAssociationofCollegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA)and the former chair of the College SportsInformation Directors of America (CoSIDA)Committee on Committees. He also served ontheCoSIDAAcademicAll-AmericaCommittee. Maddock spent two seasons as the pub-lic relations director for the North AtlanticConference and served as thehost for the1990ECAC-SIDA conference at the Buffalo Hilton.HechairedtheBaseballCommitteeforthe1993World University Games and was the assistantmediacoordinatorforthe2000NCAADivisionImen’sbasketballopeningroundgamesplayedatBuffalo’sHSBCArena. Traci Murphyenters her third seasonas Associate AthleticDirector and SeniorWomen’s Administratorfor theGoldenGriffins.Murphy joins theCanisiusstaffafterspend-ing seven seasons at theUniversity of LouisianaatMonroe.Murphy is responsiblefor all NCAA rulesenforcementofCanisius’16DivisionIathleticpro-grams in addition to allareas of student-athlete

welfare. She supervises compliance, academiccounseling,strengthandconditioningandath-letictraining.ShealsooverseestheCHAMPS/Life Skills program, and the Student-AthleteAdvisoryCommittee(SAAC). Murphy is the sport supervisor for wom-en’s soccer,men’ssoccer,women’scrosscoun-try, men’s cross country, softball and golf.She serves onMAACcommittees forAthleticAdministration,Finance,GenderandMinorityIssues, and chairs theMAAC Swimming andDivingCommitte.Shealsoorganizestheannu-al National Girls andWomen in Sports Day(NGWSD) at Canisius and helped found theWNYGirls in Sports Program. The program,incollaborationwiththeCityofBuffaloPublicSchools,areacollegesanduniversities,theBillsandGirlScoutCouncil,focusesspecificallyonyounggirls(ages9-12)andtheirinvolvementinsports. Murphybeganhercareerin1992asassoci-ateheadathletictraineratStMary’sandmovedtoULMin1998.Sheaddedtheresponsibilityof seniorwomanadministrator in2001whichinvolvedthemonitoringofwomen’ssportsandmentoringtheSAAC. In July 2003, she was promoted to theposition of director of academics, complianceand student-athlete services. Murphy workedto develop and implement an enhanced aca-demic development and compliance programfor ULM’s student-athletes and the athleticsdepartment.PriortoULM,Murphyservedfiveyears as theheadathletic trainer atSt.Mary’sCollegeofMaryland. She is a 1989 graduate of West ChesterUniversity with a bachelor’s degree in healthandphysical education. In1992, sheearnedamaster’s degree in health education from theUniversityofArkansas. The Maryland native and her husband,Pat,havetwochildren,Sean(6)andSarah(2).
