The Scent of Lemons

When I was younger, I had a kid-sized hobby for gardening. My dad built a little wooden frame to ll with topsoil, and I tried to tend a few herbs and plants. One of the surprises of gardening was the unique bugs that found their way into the garden. I remember the parsley worm in particular: striking in appearance but also in its natural defenses. If disturbed, it scares would-be predators by extending a pair of horns. Aside from the bugs, I loved to observe plants doing what they do best. For example, we still have a little orange tree at mom and dad’s house from my gardening days gone by, and I still enjoy the scent of the orange tree in bloom.

Imagine my surprise this summer when I received the required reading for my class on technology and evangelization. The book that caught my attention was The Scent of Lemons: Technology and Relationships in the Age of Facebook. To quote a one-sentence summary from the back cover, “[Author] Jonah Lynch considers whether technology is stealing something essential from us in return for all its marvelous gifts.” The connection with the title is that we miss out on something (for example, the senses of touch, taste and smell), if our primary contact with the world is through theinternet.

I appreciate that the author is writing from a Catholic perspective, and I was surprised to nd out that despite a background in physics he became a priest who is now working in a seminary in Rome. He o ers a unique perspective on the relationship between technology and the faith because his job is to train young men who arrive at the seminary saturated in technology. In order to put technology in perspective, he o ers a challenge to new seminarians: “[W]e put a proposal to all rst year seminarians, to live for 365 days without a laptop and without a cell phone, in order to learn the truevalue of these tools, to concentrate themselves on what is essential. Freedom and consciousness need an education.” One seminarian responded in anguish, “Isn’t this like cutting o a piece of me?”

For all the wonderful opportunities technology brings, there are also many distractions. It’s easy to be distracted from work, from God, from the things that matter. Technology cannot take the place of face-to-face connection with others or with God. The Ponti cal Council for Social Communications wrote in 2002, “Virtual reality cannot substitute the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist… On the internet there are no sacraments.”

Approaching technology as a gift helps to put it in its proper place. Writes Fr. Lynch, “Only if we learn to receive reality as a gift can we overcome the mere ‘use’ of it which impoverishes and empties the world. Technology cannot give order to life, it is life that must order technology…Virtuality can serve the human community, but it cannot substitute it.” It’s worth asking yourself, “Has technology improved or weakened my prayer life, my relationship with God?”

Peace,Fr. Matthew

Welcome the Stranger We have become accustomed to seeing pictures in the media and

stories on the news about immigrants from Latin America and refugees from Syria eeing violence and destruction in their own countries, trying to make their way to a safe place. We have also seen the reactions of people who want to keep them away from their countries, who fail to welcome the stranger and the helpless children. Have we forgotten Jesus call to comfort the homeless and the stranger? They shall bring all your brothers and sisters from all the nations . . . to Jerusalem, my holy mountain, says the LORD. In the three readings for this day, we are told that we are to welcome these strangers, to welcome the discipline of the Lord, which leads to peace, and to strive to enter through the narrow gate into the glory of Gods own homeland, the reign of God.Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Faith Formation Reminder Fall Faith Formation has begun. If you have a child who is making First Communion or Con rmation and they have not registered for classes, please come to the Pastoral Center at to register them.

Treasures from our Tradition The wonderful diversity of life and worship among Roman Catholics of East and West is an example of God writing straight with crooked lines. The steady hand of the villainous Emperor Diocletian drew a line across Europe and Africa that split the empire in two, and for the most part determined how Christians would worship two thousand years later.

Italys heel and the far northern city of Trieste fell on the Eastern side, and have had a form of Eastern liturgy ever since. Constantinople, which soon became the seat of the Roman Empire, became a base for Christianizing the East up to Russia and Poland. Poland was on the Eastern side, but a series of wars and medieval mayhem pushed the religious boundary back to the Ukraine, and Poland remains an outpost of the Latin Church to this day.An old rule of thumb declared that whatever religion was observed by the local prince, the people had to follow. This gave rise to persecution and migration as people sought toleration for their expressions of faith. In the United States, we are accustomed to peaceful collaboration among Christians of East and West, a situation that challenges churches that still feel the pinch of age-old division.--James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
