The Power of Coming Together

About a month ago I published a Prayer for Unity. I asked Fr. John to write this prayer in response to the struggles and frustrations that some parishioners are having in the cluster. I made the request to pray for your fellow parishioners because that is part of our Christian call: “Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. If one part su ers, all the parts su er with it; if one part ishonored, all the parts share its joy.” (1 Corinthians 12:27, 26) I wanted to give an update, especially because some of you have been praying this prayer for unity in response to my request.

Last week I was able to stop by at a birthday party for a parishioner hosted at one of our parish halls. I knew it was going to be a challenge to make the party because I had 3 events that evening. Still, I’m glad I went. There was a joyful spirit as parishioners gathered around the birthday girl, dancing and singing “Happy Birthday.” I was thinking during the festivities, “This is really special for everyone to come together in celebration!” For all the rumors and negativity I’ve heard in the parishes, this birthday party was anything but negative. Needless to say, this party was a special reminder of the power of coming together. (I wish I was able to make more of these special family events!)

At a council meeting at one of the parishes, one of the council members shared his desire to get on the same page – in other words, to come together. He said that if the council was aware andinvolved more in the decision making processes, the council members could help stop some of the bad rumors that circulate in the cluster. These are rumors that sound like, “Father is spending all our money” or “Father is trying to close our parish.” Whenever this council member shared his desire to come together, I felt inspired. “Yes! This is what I want. I want us to come together more, to worktogether more,” I thought.

The third reminder of the power of coming together was at the priest retreat I wrote about last weekend. Bishop Shelton Fabre shared that he had challenged his priests to come together soon after he arrived as bishop by getting everyone to open up to each other. At the end of a day of re ection with his priests, he gathered his priests and everyone was asked to share how he had hurt the unity in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux. He told us that priests were open and honest, with multiple priests saying, “I’m sorry for all that I’ve said about you, Bishop.” Bishop Fabre was surprised to hear that, thinking to himself, “But I just got here!” This is a reminder that just as it’s easy to complain about your pastor, we priests can fall prey to complaining about our bishop.

Thank you for your prayers, and know that your prayers are working!

Peace,Fr. Matthew
