Important Announcement from Michael Graugnard
To my family of St. James, St. Philip, and Our Lady of Peace,
In the fall of 2016, after a great deal of prayer and discernment I entered priestly formation for the Diocese of Baton Rouge. When I began my seminary journey I knew that as long as I kept my heart open to God, my life would become very different. Despite this, I had no idea just how much my life would change. I can confidently say that I am an entirely different person than when I entered the seminary, and entirely for the better. The past three years have been the happiest of my life. That being said, after a long period of thought, prayer, and discernment, I have made the decision to leave priestly formation. I will not be continuing on to Notre Dame Seminary, and instead I will be pursuing employment and further education in the secular realm. Arriving at this decision was a very difficult process, but with the guidance of my seminary formators I am at peace with my decision. I am not leaving seminary formation because of the current difficulties facing the Catholic Church, because I disagree with the seminary formation process, or because others have encouraged me to step away. My decision ismade purely out of loving obedience to the will of God which I believe I have discerned properly. The Lord, working in his mysterious ways, has simply seen fit to remove the desire for the priesthood from my heart. I still love His Holy Church with all of my heart and soul, yet I do not feel the sacramental connection to the priesthood that is shared by my seminary brothers and my spiritual fathers.
As I write this letter, my heart is heavy. Telling you this news comes with great pain, because I do not wish to disappoint any one of you who have supported me so graciously over these past three years. I feel as though I am a son disappointing his father and mother. The love and support you have shown me is literally extraordinary. Nowhere else have I seen any community be so supportive of their vocations. This does not come just from me, but also from those I have invited to visit our beautiful parishes over the years. There is truly nowhere else like our community. During every moment of difficulty these past few years, I have felt your prayers sustaining me. You all have done more to bring me closer to God than I could ever do myself. It is those same prayers that have enabled me to make such a difficult decision, to follow God’s will even when the path became dark and obscured. I will never be able to express my gratitude for the incredible amount of support you all have given me. You will be in my prayers until my last breath. I love each and every one of you as though you were my own family, because youare.
Yours in Christ,Michael Graugnard
