How do I Contact Mrs. Vicente?
Phone: 610-205-3742

Please Welcome Ms. Yacovetti!
Ms. Yacovetti will be taking over for Mrs. Vicente from the beginning of December through April. Ms. Yacovetti has been the Candlebrook building substitute since mid-September. Please contact Ms. Yacovetti with any school counseling needs you may have in the upcoming months. We are excited to welcome her into her new role as school counselor!
Kindergarteners learned the difference between tattling and reporting. Reporters know that if someone is hurt or
in danger, they should tell the teacher right away. They learned that if they are just trying to get someone in trouble – they can use “kid skills” to help solve the problem all by themselves.
1st graders will be learning about the difference between a big
problem (where they need help from an adult) and a little problem (where they can handle it on their own). Ask your 1st grader what “kid skills” they will use next time something is “bugging” them.
2nd graders learned what it means to have empathy or “stand in someone’s shoes.” Give your 2nd grader a situation and discuss how you both think the person might feel and what you could do to help them.
3rd graders learned that when someone teases them it’s because they are looking for a reaction…if they react it’s like they “bit the hook!” Ask your 3rd grader what strategy they will use to not react to the teasing and stay a “free fish!” Check out the back of this newsletter for ideas.
4th graders will be learning ways to be an “upstander” and use the “power of 1” to stand up for others. Ask your 4th grader how they will be like Harold and make a difference for

USE THE POWER OF “OH” - Say “Oh” and walk or turn away.
Ask the Counselor: Dear School Counselor, It is parent-teacher conference time. Do you have any tips for how to make this conference a successful one?
Sincerely, A Concerned Parent Dear Parent,
It’s great that you are thinking about ways to make your child’s conference a success. The conference is a time for you to ask about your child’s progress in school, find out whether he or she is meeting school expectations and academic standards, and you can also help your child’s teacher learn about what he or she is like at home. Here are some other things you can talk to your child’s teacher about:
- Progress – Find out how your child is doing according to grade level, your child’s school strengths, as well as how he or she could improve.
- Assignments and Assessments – Review work samples and ask the teacher how grading is done in his or her classroom.
- Supporting learning at home – Ask your child’s teacher what you can do at home to help support what your child is learning in the classroom.

CAST UPDATE December 1, 2015
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! The holiday season is now upon us, and while it is one of the “most wonderful times of the year,” it is also one of the most dangerous times of the year. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), 1200 people are killed each year between Thanksgiving and New Years as a result of alcohol-‐related traffic accidents! For more statistics on drinking and the holidays, view this infographic. When you’re decorating for the holidays, remember to tie a red ribbon on your vehicle. The red ribbon is a reminder to designate a non-‐drinking driver if you plan to partake of alcohol during the holiday season. You can use your own ribbon or purchase one from MADD's Campaign. This time of the year is especially dangerous for teens. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHSA), more than 11,000 young people between the ages of 12-‐17 take their first sip of alcohol on an average December day! With unsupervised time off from school and an increase in parties and festivities, the pressure to drink and use substances is stronger than ever. Even though you may be caught up in the frenzy of the season, take time to talk with your teen about peer pressure and substance use. To help you start the conversation, visit: http://www.samhsa.gov/underage-‐drinking; http://powertotheparent.org/, http://www.drugfree.org/; and http://www.thecoolspot.gov/right_to_resist.aspx. HOLIDAY HOOPLA: Come to Upper Merion Township’s Holiday Hoopla on Friday, December 4th from 6:30-‐8:00 at the Township Building for great family fun with a tree lighting ceremony, carols, crafts for the kids, and Santa. CAST will be there too! Students from the Middle School CAST Club will be serving Holiday Punch, so be sure to get your sample! If you need recipes for non-‐alcohol drinks for holiday entertaining, you can pick up a brochure. Be sure to check out the CAST Club’s gingerbread schoolhouse with the theme, “We Rule, We’re a Drug-‐Free School. We’re Too Smart to Start!” HOLIDAY DE-‐STESS! As fun as they are, the holidays can be stressful – the piles of presents to wrap, the never-‐ending shopping and to-‐do list, the family obligations, etc.! Some people use unhealthy methods, such as substance use, to deal with stress. Check out all of the events happening this month to help you deal with stress in a healthy way. Why don’t you plan to attend at least one so that you can manage your stress during the holidays and into the new year?

THE GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT: Each year, the Great American Smokeout is celebrated in November. This is a day dedicated to spreading awareness about the dangers of smoking and encouraging people to quit. This year, CAST focused on e-‐cigarettes, which are soaring in popularity among teens. According to one study, usage rates among middle and high schoolers tripled in one year, threatening the great progress that has been made in the past decade to reduce youth smoking. Many teens are under the false assumption that e-‐cigarettes are safe to use, claiming that they are just inhaling water vapor. Unfortunately, most e-‐cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive. Traces of nicotine have been found in the vapor of “nicotine-‐free” e-‐cigarettes. In addition, the vapor contains harmful chemicals and nanoparticles of metal from the vaporizing element. The Journal of the

Live, Breathe, & Meditate Tuesday, December 15, at 7:30 pm
Valley Forge Room, Upper Merion Township Building Come and explore the link between breath and mind.
No registration necessary.
American Medical Association recently published a study which found that youth begin smoking e-‐cigarettes due to their appealing flavors such as bubble gum, mint, and chocolate, and another study showed that students who begin smoking e-‐cigarettes by 9th grade are more likely to switch to conventional cigarettes within a year. Currently, the FDA does not regulate e-‐cigarettes, although it has been working on a plan to bring e-‐cigarettes under its authority. Unfortunately, the House of Representatives will be voting on an appropriations bill in 2016, which has a rider attached to it, which aims to shield all existing e-‐cigarettes from regulation. Congratulations to the following students who won prizes for correctly answering CAST’s daily GREAT AMERICAN SMOKEOUT questions: High School: Dante Labriciossa; Emily Hayes; Kimberley Melck; McKenna Canale; and Samantha Gwalthney. Middle School: Nathaly Vazquez-‐Rosas; Luis Martinez; Zachary Rothbell; Sonya Savini; and Lindsay Yuen. FLU SHOTS – Do you still need a flu shot? It’s not too late. Influenza can occur at any time. In recent seasons, most infections have occurred in January and February. Getting vaccinated in December will still be beneficial. Most people 6 months of age and older should get flu vaccine every year! You can get a flu shot at the Norristown Health Center, 1430 DeKalb Street, Norristown, PA 19404. Mondays — children under 19 years old by appointment only (times vary), please call for an appointment Tuesdays — all ages on a walk-‐in basis from 9:00am-‐3:00pm CAST COMMUNITY MEETING – Celebrating our Community Volunteers! Join us for cake and conversation on Wednesday, December 9th at 6:30 and help us celebrate the volunteers who helped in the past year. Our grant requires community support and volunteers. If you’d like to volunteer or share ideas about preventing teen substance use and violence, please join us! The meeting will be held in the High School LGI.
