FURLAN I love chemistry – its color, “magic”, transforming power, and endless possibilities. I love our profession – its many facets, impacting areas ranging from food, water, health, energy, environment, and much more. I love its leading role in improving people’s lives and in shaping our world. I love our Society – how it supports our profession. I love how it offers myriad opportunities to people including immigrants like myself, so we get to experience, explore, and appreciate chemistry while building bonds, and learn, contribute, share, grow and celebrate while strengthening those bonds. I love teaching – how patience, encouragement, and research enhance critical thinking and change the lives of young people. I hooray for the vital roles our student members play in many areas, especially in reaching out to the public with chemistry marvels and science fun. I am a proud member of the New York Section of the Society, the largest and oldest Section, and I am humbled to be asked to run for the Office of Chair-Elect. For its over 100+ annual events and diversified programming, actively and successfully supporting the Society’s mission, the New York Section has repeatedly received the National Outstanding Performance by a Local Section Award by the Society. The Nichols Medal Symposium, the Undergraduate Research Symposium, and the outreach to the community through National Chemistry Week at the New York Hall of Science are just a few of the exciting opportunities the New York Section offers to its members and the public. The Section’s excellence is only made possible through its devoted and talented members and its extremely wise and capable leadership. But globally as a whole, we are facing pressing challenges today including limited resources, increasing pollution, and degradation of environments. I share the deep concern of many: the sustainability of our planet. As chemists, what can each of us do to help find sustainable solutions, allowing us to continue improving quality of people’s life by harnessing the power of chemistry without compromising the success of our future generations? As your chair, I will not only work with you to do my very best to support all existing events and programs, but also actively promote “A Greener Earth Starts with Me” Project. I encourage you to think about doing one thing differently this year to help preserve our green Earth. Examples include: 1. Participating in our Chemists Celebrate Earth Day Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge; 2. Reaching out to the Students K-12, the next generation of leaders - educating them about the importance of taking care of our environment; 3. Applying a life-cycle perspective whenever possible, whether on your job or at home; 4. Applying Green Chemistry Principles whenever possible, whether you teach or research; 5. Producing products that benefit environments. I will work with the Section’s Leadership to highlight you, your organizations, your committees, your topical groups, or your subsections for what you have done in celebrating our Earth via different forms of news media. JOSEPH M. SERAFIN

I am profoundly honored to be nominated to serve as the Chair-Elect for the New York Section of the American Chemical Society. For 125 years, our organization has been an important and vital force for the advancement of chemistry in the region. The most important services that our Section provides are public outreach to advance the chemical enterprise, professional development of our members, and the development of the next generation of chemical professionals and scientifically literate citizens. The Section through the Sub-Sections and Topical Groups provide a large number of seminars over the course of year by chemical professionals, many of which are free and open to the public. I would like to increase our outreach by adding events aimed at the adult general public. The Section does an outstanding job of facilitating the development of students at every level. For example, we sponsor

Page 3: CANDIDATES FOR CHAIR-ELECT FOR 2017American Chemical Society’s New York Section, Inc. 2016 Elections - Candidates Information (Offices of Chair-elect, Secretary, Directors at Large

National Chemistry Week events where grade school students can perform hands-on chemistry demonstrations. We sponsor Chemagination where high school students can envision how chemical advances can literally change the future. One of the student events that I am most proud of is the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium. This event allows students to discuss and defend their research results to peers; the sense of excitement about science at this event is amazing. I would like to increase the communication between the student chemistry organizations in our Section, as well as between these student groups and the Section. The Section provides opportunities for professional development through the Topical Groups and Sub-Sections. The outstanding achievements of these groups have resulted in numerous national ChemLuminary awards over the years. I believe the key to continued success in this area lies in encouraging and supporting the leaders of these groups - it is their passion that drives our success. I would request funding to host ACS Leadership System courses to help ensure their continued success. The primary challenge for our section is to give a voice to members who have not been active. The question is not why haven’t they been active, but how can we better engage them? We must ask our members what are they passionate about and then find a way to support that vision. The needs of our members today are different from what they were 30 years ago, and those needs will be different again in another 30 years. The first step is to reach out to our members and ask what types of opportunities or challenges they are interested in, and then plan how the Section can assist by playing new roles or changing old ones. My door will always be open to members who have ideas about ways the Section can better serve their needs! We have a great deal of talented, dedicated, and energetic people in our Section, and I am excited at the opportunity to help them achieve their goals. I look forward to continuing to work with the Board of Directors and other groups as we enter into the next 125 years of outstanding service to both our current members and the next generation.
