now with her health (hopefully 2012 will see progress in getting her better). She supports my candidacy, and without that support I could not consider running. Both Sherry and my health problems are ongoing concerns for me, and I will do my best to perform the duties of state council secretary while taking care of her and dealing with my health issues. During this past two-year I have not been able to attend most of the council meetings in Fresno due to my wife’s health, but have been able to record the minutes via teleconference/phone, and continue the duties of CSC Secretary remotely. If I am unable to attend the convention, it maybe unprecedented to consider a candidate not in attendance. I hope you will consider my record as council secretary as my ability to fulfill the position. It is my desire to be more involved by being present at the meetings, but as we say often in VVA – family comes first; and my wife needs me to care for her – part of the marriage vows “for better or worse” says it best. I have been a secretary of sorts since my last years in the Marine Corps. It is something I do well, I think, and I feel I can do a good job for the California State Council. In my years in VVA I have seen how important it is to step forward and be part of the organization. I am doing that again, stepping forward and running for State Council Secretary. I am familiar with how VVA runs, not everything, there is always more to learn. The “politics” of this organization may not be something some people like; I’m one of those who do like to be involved in the process, so yes I do like the “politics.” It’s a necessary part of any organization, and I feel I can help VVA continue on into the 21st century. I feel that technology has a place in VVA, and I would like to help integrate more of it in to the every day workings of it. Many members have computers, and we can help make our jobs easier with more access to electronic related material. My project to make PDF forms that are downloaded able to be filled out on your computer has been successful; we even published a Zephyr issue electronically this past January. Another goal is to make them able to be filled out on our web site and submitted electronically with just a click on “Submit.” I feel that the more accessible we are, the more people are going to have an interest in what we do. VVA has been a relatively lesser-known organization for a long time, I hope that we can continue to grow and let more people know about VVA. “VVA…. What a difference!” In Service To America Tom Hohmann, Life Member

After graduation from Advanced Infantry Training I received orders for Vietnam, arriving at Long Binh, South Vietnam on March 3, 1970. After 3 days in Long Binh I was sent to Chu Lai to be assigned to an infantry unit with the Americal Division. While going through orientation in Chu Lai I was presented with the idea of volunteering to be a doorgunner on a Huey. I volunteered and was chosen to be a door gunner. I was assigned to the 71st Assault Helicopter Company, the Rattlers and Firebirds. I flew as a door gunner on a Huey for 2 months, and then was promoted to crew chief. We would fly combat assaults, resupply missions, troop transports, medivacs and I flew numerous missions spraying Agent Orange on rice paddies in no man’s land. For my first 10 months in country we flew for the Americal Division and various Marine units south of Da Nang. With approximately 60 days left, in country, our unit was transferred to Quang Tri, just south of the DMZ, where I spent my last 2 months participating in Lam Son 719. On March 3, 1971 I left Vietnam with 1340 hours of flight time. With 5 months left in the Army I was sent to Fort Carson, Colorado, where I was promoted to Specialist 5th Class. There were too many crew chiefs at Fort Carson so my MOS was changed to helicopter mechanic. I was honorably discharged from the Army in September 1971. Work History: After discharge from the Army I worked for Rainbo Bread Company in Grand Island, Nebraska for 3 years. After a year and a half I was promoted to shift supervisor. In 1974 I moved my family to California where I was employed at a food distributer in Rialto, CA. working as a truck driver and warehouse stockman until I promoted to warehouse supervisor in 1976. In 1977 I became a California Highway Patrol Officer working the areas of Santa Ana, San Juan Capistrano and Riverside - spending 29 years 6 months working the freeways and county roads in the State of California. I retired from the CHP on September 1, 2006.

Education: Graduated from Rubidoux High School, Rubidoux, CA. Attended Riverside Community College from 1974 to 1977 majoring in Criminal Justice. Graduated from the California Highway Patrol Academy, Sacramento CA in April of 1978.

VVA History: In October 1996 I joined Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 47. As a Chapter 47 member I have served on the Board of Directors, served as Vice-president and am currently the chapter President, a position I have held for the past 10 years. I have also been the membership chair for Chapter 47 and served as Chapter 47’s delegate to the CSC for 2 years. At the State Council level I enjoyed being the Southern District VP for 2 years and for the last 2 years I have been the CSC President. For 4 years I served as the CSC Membership Chair and am now serving with VVA’s National Membership Committee. I have attended 3 of the VVA National Leadership Conferences in the last 6 years and numerous National Conventions. I am proud to be a Life Member of VVA and AVVA.

Campaign Statement: I feel that in the past two years that the CSC BOD has brought forth a good transparency of the BOD to all the CSC Delegates and Chapters. I would like to see the CSC continue to move forward with the Veteran Service Officer (VSO) program and to retain our Legislative Advocate working for us at the State Capitol. I believe in and appreciate our membership and know if it was not for our membership there may not be a productive State Council with a clear future. Our chapters work hard for our veterans and their communities, ultimately being a positive reflection on the CA State Council.

learn. I believe that transparency of operation is critical to maintain the trust of members. We are a corporation and a business; however, we are more importantly an advocacy organization. I believe that supporting chapter membership is a priority. It is imperative to maintain a mutually supportive and nurturing relationship between the Board of Directors, chapters, and membership. I consider this to be the main job of Northern District VP; be an interface between the BOD and chapters. Above all, let's have some fun. In spite of the challenges of advocacy, our work can be fun and satisfying, not acrimonious or overbearing. The past council has been calm, supportive and productive. I feel confident that I can represent the interests of Northern District Chapters. The Northern District chapters represent a tremendous diversity of locations and interests. I look forward to learning more from each chapter. We are a tremendous community, bonded in purpose.
