WHAT THE DISEASE IS?• Noma is a severe disfiguring of the mouth and face that starts as a gingival ulcer and

spreads rapidly through the tissues of the mouth and face. Unlike other infectious processes of the face, which may progress along anatomic spaces of the head and neck, noma can disrupt anatomic barriers and spread through muscle and bone.

CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS OF NOMA• The exact cause is unknown, but may be due to bacteria called fusospirochetal bacteria.

• Often followed from other illness such as measles or tuberculosis.

• This disorder most often occurs in young, severely malnourished children between the ages of 2 and 5 and is mostly found in African children.

• Risk factors include Kwashiorkor and other forms of severe protein malnutrition, poor sanitation and poor cleanliness, and living in an underdeveloped country.

TREATMENT• Antibiotics and proper nutrition helps stop the disease from getting worse.

• Plastic surgery may be necessary to remove destroyed tissues and reconstruct facial bones. This will improve facial appearance and the function of the mouth and jaw.
