Bench Tips by Brad Smith

CLEANING STEEL SHOT Steel shot in a vibratory or rotary tumbler works great to burnish and shine your finished silver pieces. But a

common problem is how keep the shot clean. Carbon steel shot can get rusty if exposed to the air, and even stainless steel shot can sometimes develop a blackish coating that's hard to remove.

My solution of choice to clean the shot is Classic Coke. Just pour an ounce or two over the shot and let the tumbler run for an hour or so. A bad case might require a second cleaning. Some folks like to let the bub-bles in the Coke dissipate before using it so that gas pressure doesn't build up in the tumbler barrel. I've heard that it's the phosphoric acid in Coke that does the trick.

While you're waiting for the shot to clean up, just settle back and enjoy the rest of the Coke.

March Business Report March 1, 2017 The meeting was called to order by President Don McLamb. We welcomed new members and guests Cathe-rine Cook and Theo Schrepp. Don reminded folks that our annual Dolly's Picnic is coming up on April 2 at Goode Park in Palm Bay . Come on out for a real good time on Turkey Creek! Mark Jackson will be cooking up the burgers and dogs, also vegetarian options and Melissa Horan will be our entertaining auctioneer. The time reserved at the pavilion is from 9 A.M. until 6 P.M. Don stated there was an Estate sale with lapidary items in Palm Bay on March 2-5. The February meeting minutes were accepted and Liz Ritter gave the Treasurer's report. Vendor's are paying for space at our annual Parade of Gems. We will be giving out the scholarships to the SFMS workshops at this meeting. Lesley Wayment told us of the SFMS plans to give scholarships out to Club Members. Tickets are available on the SFMS website and will be drawn at the October annual meeting. The price is 5$ a ticket or 5 tickets for 20$. The scholarships will be honored in the 2018 season of workshops at both Wild Acres and William Holland. As a reminder, our SFMS workshop drawing is separate from the SFMS one. Kathie Burnette stated we are at the 2017 membership level but as of March the members who have not paid for the year will be taken off the membership list. Thanks Bea Deitz for the hospitality of the evening! Dave Wayment gave the Educational Report and told members that the SFMS workshop schedule was in the house to look at. We are fully engaged in the process of instructors and participation in this awesome experi-ence. Dave stated that the need to be prompt with payments in open workshops and classes is essential to our club and if you choose to not pay in the timely manner then you will not be taking anymore classes or work-shops. Shannon Byrd will be teaching an Intermediate Wire Wrapping Class soon On Tuesday nights for 2 weeks. Roy Deere will be teaching Beginning Chain Maille on Thursday morning and evening classes. Kathy Ero will start up a Fused Glass/ Enamel Class soon. Kathy Burnette told us Haydee Hernandez is back from Du-bai and is ready to do beading workshops again. Yeah! Shannon Byrd gave the Moonstone report and let her know if you are having troubles receiving it either by mail or email. Dave Jacobson gave the Mineral of the Month presentation on Native Silver. It was one of the first metals to be used for coinage. It was very highly used in photography but now the digital age has kicked in. We all love it as jewelry makers because of it's relatively low cost. Dave also presented Show and Tell. Bob Denaburg showed a piece of Silver and Copper from Upper Michi-gan. Roy Deere showed examples of his class in Argentium Silver. Dave Jacobson showed nice Sea Glass pendant. Debbie Jorgenson showed a nice Carousel cut piece from Mark Heathman's Faceting Class. Mark Heathman showed his Carousel cut made along with an Amethyst cut and some Fordite fun. Also a ring made of Corundum (Ruby). Pat Shannon displayed her work in faceting class with some beautiful Fire Agate. She managed a pendant, ring and earring! Shannon Byrd showed some pieces of work of examples of her upcom-ing class in Intermediate Wire Wrapping. Thanks one and all for sharing!!! Bill Harr told us Don Norris is coming to teach some casting classes to various Clubs in the area and he would get in touch with him if anyone was interested. The raffle drawing for the SFMS Workshops were held and the BIG Winners were Liz Ritter Keith Stokes and Tom Backhaus!!!!!!!!! Congrats!!!!!The alternatives are Art Delaurentis , Joe Mullens and Bea Deitz!!! Happy Day to all!!!!! We also did our monthly raffle for our hopes and dreams of next year's drawing to win... and gathering of goodies donated...and the winners were Mike McKinnon with a whale fluke in Sterling Silver, Denise Jack-son with a Unakite slab and Karen Cheslock with Sterling Silver turtle earrings. After a break and goodies, Donna Remsnyder gave a great presentation of a trip out west in Utah and Wyo-ming of fossil hunting with a good friend. Some of the fossils are from 50,000,000 years ago. Imagine that!!The sedimentary wonders are for real! She gave us all samples of the fauna, flora in stone. Thanks so much for your passion to share! Looking forward to seeing ya'all at the picnic!!

Respectfully yours, Denise Jackson, Secretary

Mineral of the Month – Wulfenite By Dave Jacobson

Wulfenite (PbMoO4) lead molybdate is our featured mineral this month. Wulfenite is a favor-ite of many mineral collectors. It is in the subclass of minerals called molybdates. It is a sec-ondary mineral, which occurs in oxidized zones of ore deposits containing lead and molyb-denum. Some associated minerals are vanadinite, mimetite, cerrusite, limonite, calcite and hemimorphite. It is sometimes mined as a secondary ore of molybdenum. Some of the finest specimens are found in the southwestern United States. Principal deposits of wulfenite in the United States are in Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona and Pennsylvania.

Wulfenite is in the tetragonal crystal system. The crystals are usually tabular (thick or thin) in shape and occur at scattered angles on matrix. The crystals are brittle with a subconchoidal to uneven fracture. The color of wulfenite ranges from yellow, orange, red and gray to white. Luster can be satin like or diamond like. It has a hardness of 2.5 to 3.0 with a specific gravity of 6.5 to 7.0. It streak tests white.

Wulfenite is named the Austrian mineralogist Franz Xaver von Wulfen (1728 -1805).
