The Ohio legislature realized the
importance and created a new Ohio Canal Commission
The idea of a canal system came about because Ohioans needed a quick and easy access to the Ohio River and Lake Erie.
The canals nearly bankrupted the state government but they allowed Ohioans to prosper from 1830 through the Civil War
Governor Brown convinced Ohio legislature to establish the Ohio Canal Commission
The Ohio Legislature approved canal routes and work began immediately

Pictures of the canals.
In 1820, Brown convinced the Ohio legislature to establish the Ohio Canal Commission. Its purpose was to hire an engineer to survey a route for a canal that would connect Lake Erie with the Ohio River. Now, in the 21st Century, canals are only used for recreational use, but barges are used for transporting goods.
Canals were important because they helped transport goods and people across the state of Ohio.
In 1833, the Ohio and Erie Canal was completed, but the Miami and Erie canal took another 12 years to complete.
Mules pulled the boats on the canal side.
Canals were man made rivers that were used to transport goods faster than wagons.

Steamboats
1807 Ohioan’s
heard about a steamboat build by
Robert Fulton
1811 A big crowd
gathered in Pittsburg to see the first steamboat travel on the Ohio
River
1811-1825 Cincinnati shipyards built 25
steamboats
1818 Steamboats started to travel on Lake Erie
2012 Steamboats
are now used for tourists.
Steamboats were
replaced by barges
Time line
Steamboats helped Ohio by carrying goods and people down the river. Steamboats are large boats powered by steam engines. Steamboats were invented because keelboats were back-breaking work. Steamboats were better than keelboats because they could travel up river. In October 1811 the first steamboat to travel down the Ohio River began its journey. It was called the New Orleans. Steamboats travelled a lot on Lake Erie. Steamboats are not used the same way they were in the 1800’s.

•After railroads were built, the use steamboats declined.
Steamboats were an important mode of transportation in Ohio. Before Steamboats people had to use keelboats. The first steamboat on the Ohio reiver was called the New Orleans. It was invented by Robert Fulton to carry heavier loads. Steamboats didn’t travel on Lake Erie because it was to dangerous. During the time steamboats were allowed to travel on Lake Erie, Cincinnati Shipyards launched twenty- five steamboats. Traveling by steamboats could be very dangerous, until lighthouses were built. Then a sad fate hit the steamboat: railroads came along and no one traveled by steamboats anymore.
RAILROADS IN OHIOMrs. Champa
The way Trains Changed Ohio The railroads started in 1804. They built the railroads and abandoned the canals because people couldn’t use them in the winter . The railroads helped Ohio because it was fast transportation and made Ohio more popular. There was many railroads in Ohio because migration from the east exploded, providing a vast and hungry labor pool. The immigrant population and citizens of Ohio made the railroads in Ohio. The trains were nicknamed “Iron Horse” because they were fast and made out of iron. The railroads also helped connect to eastern states and the west.

In 1825, railroads were built. Originally, they were not very fast because the were pulled by horses. Then by the 1850s, there were trains made by steal. By the 1900’s a lot of people used them. Now in 2012, people don’t use trains and railroads as often because there are cars and other faster kinds of transportations.

Facts and Timeline• In 1850 there were 300 miles of
track in Ohio. In 1860 (just ten years later) there was more than 3,000 miles of railroads were in Ohio. Railroads and other things began to run on coal in the 1850’s because coal became a inexpensive source. Thousands of jobs were brought from Ohio because of railroads.. Trains were more popular than anything else, because boats and horses can’t hold much. Trains like these carried goods for people or factories for example fruits, food, oil and more.
• 1828: First Railroad.• 1836: First railroad was
called, “ Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad.
• 1860: Ohio had just under 3,000 miles of track.
• Mid- 1800s the growth of railroads changed the size of businesses.
• Alyssa Brohl, Piper Howard, August Miller, and Nick Walsh.
1828
•They got the idea to build a railroad.
•thTheyu got the idea to bild a train
1836
•Finished the railroad.
1850
•Started to use coal instead of horses.
1900
•Started using oil.
1910
•More than 9,500 miles of tracks.
By: Kelly Metzger, Kayla Walsh, and Timothy Seymour
Railroads had an advantage over canals because they were faster, connected communities, and they didn’t freeze when it was cold. Railroads also brought people into Ohio which created more jobs. The railroads improved over the years with speed and mileage. They used to run on horses but now they run on coal.

Electric Trolley FactsIn the late 1800’s communities started building smaller railroads between towns. In 1884 the electric trolley came to Ohio. The first electric trolley in the U.S connected Newark and Granville.Trolleys operated within single communities.Electric Trolleys that ran between communities are also known as inter-urbans.Most railways ran several trains at a time.By WWI, 2,798 miles of track existed in Ohio.Ohio’s mileage of track exceeded the next closest state by 1,000 miles.

Even though electric trolleys traveled small distances, they
helped people and goods move from one place to the next. Electric
trolleys are vehicles that are like buses. Some of them have names. Electric trolleys run on electricity.
The electricity comes from wires on top of the trolley. Electric trolley’s
electric engines were taken out and gas engines were put in. The
trolleys are now rented out to, pick up people and take them places. In the time of World War I, street cars were a huge industry. They made
jobs for over 100,000 people.

Electric trolleys have changed transportation in Ohio. A trolley is a passenger rail vehicle which runs along public streets. What made them so popular was that they were a quick and cheap alternative transportation. Trolleys were easier than using horses or traveling on foot and that is why many people wanted to take them. Electric trolleys ran on lines powered by electricity. The lines took people throughout the city. Most early amusement parks were powered by electric trolley lines. By WWI, 2,798 miles of trolley track was in Ohio. Ohio’s mileage exceeded the next closest state by about 1,000 miles. By the 1930s, most electric trolleys had stopped running.

Ohio’s Automobiles• Bufori is a modern brand of rare automobiles resembling
1930s coupes. The company is owned by Australian brothers Anthony, George and Gerry Khouri, and was in Ohio. In 1986, Gerry Khouri began to build three s. The acronym “Bufori” stands for Beautiful, Unique, Fantastic, Original, Romantic, and sports cars, one each for the three brothers, which led to the formation of the company. Oliver Old maps provide much information about what was known in times past, as well as the philosophy and cultural basis of the map, which were often much different from modern cartography. Maps can show how the automobile changed Ohio as well as the rest of the U.S. The auto mobile improved Ohio’s economy because of the ability to travel. Maps are one means by which scientists distribute their ideas and pass them on to future generations. Daniel

Ohio’s Interstate Highways
Ohio’s interstate highways played a big role in infrastructure in the 1950’s. Because of the interstate highways, there was more dependence on the automobile. The amount of concrete to form the roads was enough for six sidewalks to the moon. In 1956, the government implemented the Interstate Highway Act. To maintain the highways, the government established tax and excise on gasoline.

Highways were built to move cars and people between the suburbs and cities and where they worked. By the end of the 1950’s ,high-speed highways crossed the land of America. The reason why people made big interstate highways is because it is faster travel.Matt Smith
