with strong ties to the OHSAA, who asked not to be identified.

“Someone within the office told me Jerry had completely lost his staff,” the source added. “There were disagree-ments and shouting matches with people over their roles. From an administrative stand-point, he was so well liked and respected — a great advocate for the high school sports com-munity. But we don’t always know what happens behind closed doors. I’m shocked and disappointed that people couldn’t come to the table and resolve these issues before it came to this.”

A second source with inti-mate knowledge of the inner workings of the OHSAA made similar remarks.

“Whenever a CEO loses his or her job in just the second year, it’s usually the fault of the people who hired that person because the skill sets don’t match the strengths that person brings to the table,” the source said.

“That’s exactly what hap-pened in Jerry’s case. Outside the office, his skills and inter-actions with the community were phenomenal. But he had a very hard time dealing with budgets, financial matters and the organizational skills needed to run a $20 million organization.”

On top of that, the source added, morale at the OHSAA was at an all-time low.

“Some staffers just didn’t feel valued by Jerry. They felt like they weren’t being allowed to work to their strengths,” the source said.

By text message, Snodgrass declined a request to speak on the matter. Except for a short statement in a news release, board president Dan Leffin-gwell declined to comment further, as did two others on the 11-man board.

Hired as executive director in July 2018 when Dan Ross stepped down, Snodgrass had spent the past 12 years of his 31-year career in education at

the OHSAA.In tabbing Goldring as

interim leader of the nonprofit organization, Leffingwell announced that a nationwide search for the vacancy will begin immediately.

“Through a collabora-tive effort, we look forward to Bob guiding us and, more importantly, the OHSAA providing guidance to our member schools on the antici-pated restart of interscholastic athletics this fall,” said Leff-ingwell, superintendent of the Noble Local Schools in Sarahsville.

Goldring stunnedAlthough he was aware of the

inner strife, Goldring said he was somewhat stunned by the announcement Monday night.

“With most of us working at home, we weren’t intimately involved in everything going on,” Goldring said. “I knew there were things that the board had discussed that they wanted resolved.”

He added, “But, yes, I was kind of caught off guard about the interim position.”

In a brief statement Monday, OHSAA senior director of communications Tim Stried said, “The board of directors felt it necessary to go in a dif-ferent direction with OHSAA leadership. We cannot go into more detail at this time.”

Stried added that the board’s move was not hastened by one single action in or out of the office by Snodgrass, but rather an ongoing issue.

Goldring, who served as acting executive director for three months in 2016 when Ross was sidelined with health issues, inherits a tough situa-tion. The state boys and girls basketball, wrestling and ice hockey tournaments were canceled in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The entire spring sports season also was wiped out.

Snodgrass confirmed last month that the lost revenue (roughly $2 million) from those events had placed the OHSAA in a financial hardship. He vol-untarily took a 25% salary cut.

Carmen’s Crew fallsThere will be no repeat for Carmen’s Crew. One year removed from its first The Bas-

ketball Tournament championship, the team of Ohio State alumni was bounced in its first game of the tournament. No. 16 seed House of ’Paign, a team of Illinois alumni, took the lead with 2:30 to play in the third quarter and never let go, pulling away for a 76-68 win Wednesday afternoon at Nationwide Arena.

It marked the final professional game for Aaron Craft, who will begin attending medical school this summer. Kyle Vinales delivered the final blow, scoring on a floater in the paint to hit the Elam Ending target score and clinch the upset of top-seeded Carmen’s Crew.

After closing the first half with a run, a pair of early 3-pointers pushed the Crew’s lead to nine points at 50-41 before House of ’Paign mounted a challenge.

Carmen’s Crew started four former Buck-eyes in William Buford, Aaron Craft, Dallas Lauderdale and David Lighty alongside Otter-bein product Jeff Gibbs. Deshaun Thomas, playing in TBT for the first time, was the first substitute off the bench.

BIG X LOSES After Big X opened up a double-digit first-quarter lead in its second-round game in The Basketball Tournament, the Dayton alumni team took control with a 12-0 run to break open a tied game and earn a 77-68 win at Nationwide Arena on Wednes-day afternoon. Red Scare did it from deep: it hit 14 of 34 3-pointers, clinching the win with a three from the right corner by Ryan Mike-sell, who hit 4 of 7 during the game. Former Buckeyes were on each side. Trevor Thomp-son, playing for the Dayton alumni team, finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. For Big X, C.J. Jackson had seven points and Andrew Dakich had one assist, three turn-overs and no shots in the defeat.

Minerva postpones HallThe Minerva Athletic Hall of Fame — citing

the current uncertainties surrounding public health guidelines during the coronavirus pan-demic — is postponing any new inductions for 2020.

The Minerva High School athletic depart-ment announced the decision Wednesday morning in an email to media.

Inductions will resume during the fall of 2021. The hall of fame committee still will take nominations in the spring of 2021 to be included with those submitted this past spring.

“It is of the utmost importance to the com-mittee that each and every Inductee have the same opportunity to be recognized as past individuals have been,” the release stated. “Given the current pandemic, the commit-tee did not feel confident enough to say they could provide that opportunity to what would have been this year’s Induction class.”

eventually canceled.So this game gives

Massillon a first and last chance to play a game with its 2020 varsity roster.

“The kids are excited about it,” Ridgley said. “They really wanted to do it. I really wanted to do it. It’s a great opportunity to be together and play with everything that has happened.”

After a day at the beach last week, Ridgley walked back to his car to find a message on his phone from Roy Jacobs, the Rub-berDucks’ senior manager for amateur baseball development. He offered Ridgley a spot in the game against Walsh Jesuit.

Ridgley quickly started reaching out to players to find out their availabil-ity, since most of them are playing summer ball and some might be going on vacation this time of year. He touched base with Massillon’s admin-istration to make sure he had the school’s blessing. The school contacted the Ohio High School Athletic Association to make sure there were no problems.

By Friday evening, the Tigers were a full go for the game.

“As you can imagine, there was a lot of work to

do,” Ridgley said, before adding with a chuckle about his vacation, “I’m very fortunate that my wife April is as under-standing as she is.”

Tickets cost $10 and likely will go on sale early next week. Atten-dance will be capped at 1,000 to follow social distancing guidelines (Canal Park has a capac-ity of about 8,000). Fans will be required to wear masks while entering the ballpark and on the concourse. Masks can be taken off when fans are in their socially-distanced seats.

A fireworks show will follow the game.

Jim Pfander, the RubberDucks’ gen-eral manager and chief operating officer, said the organization started brainstorming ideas for events once the Minor League Baseball season was postponed in April (it was canceled completely two weeks ago).

Pfander, a Hoban grad, recalled the final game of his high school base-ball career in 1996, when he pitched a complete game as a senior with his parents watching. It is one of his favorite memories from his playing days.

“I thought about these kids and them not being able to experience some-thing like that,” Pfander said. “So it’s important to

give them one first time and one last time to be able to play together.”

Massillon will almost have its full roster avail-able, Ridgley said. One player will miss because of a family vacation. Of Massillon’s four class of 2020 players — Aidan Longwell, Amar Ede Alkire, Heath Manson and Robbie Page — only Lon-gwell is a question mark. The Kent State recruit has his graduation party (which already has been moved before because of COVID-19 concerns) slated for that day.

Ridgley is excited to be putting a game plan together and to face an opponent such as Walsh Jesuit, a regional finalist last season in Division I.

He hopes to have Manson start on the mound. He’d like Lon-gwell to pitch, too, if the lefty is there.

With players coming from their summer teams, he can’t know for sure which arms will be available.

Ridgley said there is a 25-person maximum in the dugout. He plans to have 18 players in addition to his coaching staff.

“I think it’s a really neat opportunity,” Ridgley said. “And it’s a great place to play, too.”

“Of course, we watch everything that’s going on,” said Big 12 com-missioner Bob Bowlsby, whose league has schools in five states from West Virginia to Iowa and Texas. “But we’re going to go forward and do our own evaluation, and so far our scientists and medical people are telling us that

we should stay the course, and learn as we go and move slowly and evaluate as we go.”

The Ivy League announcement affects not just football but soccer, field hockey, volleyball and cross country, as well as the fall portion of winter sports like bas-ketball. Wednesday’s decision means Harvard and Yale will not play football in 2020, inter-rupting a rivalry known

as The Game for the first time since the two World Wars.

“This news is disap-pointing for all of us,” Harvard athletic direc-tor Erin McDermott said. “While the Fall 2020 experience will be unlike any other, I am confident that we will find positive opportunities in this chal-lenging time. We will keep moving forward through this painful but temporary experience, together.”

Anker transfers to HobanKarli Anker has transferred to Hoban

High School for her senior year after spend-ing the past three years as a star on the Manchester girls basketball team.

Anker announced the transfer on Twitter on Tuesday night. She was selected for the All-Northeast Ohio Inland District and All-Ohio teams in Division III as a freshman, sophomore and junior while at Manchester. She also received All-PAC-7 honors in each of her three seasons with the Panthers.

“Thanks to the Manchester community for the continuous support the past three years. Time for a new chapter, let’s get it,” Anker tweeted Tuesday night.

Anker scored 1,350 career points in three seasons at Manchester, according to Shawn Zavodney, who stepped down as the Pan-thers coach after the season.

Anker’s junior year included a triple-double in a regular-season game against Ellet, and she led Manchester by averaging 20.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, 3.7 steals and 2.9 assists per game. The Panthers finished the season 10-14.

Hoban coach Pam Davis said Wednesday that Anker has enrolled at Hoban.

Anker averaged 20.2 points and grabbed over 100 rebounds as a freshman, and then averaged 20.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 4.1 steals and 3.2 assists per game as a sophomore.

Carrasco and then pos-sibly Aaron Civale, Zach Plesac, Adam Plutko and others can find a level off consistency other teams can’t, the Indians are hoping it’ll help to stave off a poor start.

“Massive advantages. That’s where the Cleve-land Indians have had an advantage over every-body else in baseball for the last couple of years,” said Adam Plutko via Zoom. “Then you look at the advantage, you can make it as big or as small

as you want to, but if all five starters are out to 6-7 innings when we break summer camp, now we can carry less bullpen guys per se and we can carry a really fast sprinter for the 10th inning in a tie ballgame, and in a 60-game season that one player for the first four weeks could make a huge difference because we have one less bullpen arm, per se.”

“Or, by the same token, our bullpen is so deep, now we can carry more bullpen guys and we can play the matchup game, within reason because of the three-batter

minimum, a little bit better than some other teams. Just the fact that our starting pitching is so deep and we can hand the ball off to such a good bullpen, now we can do some different stuff else-where, and that’s pretty exciting.”

Some have brought up the notion that this sea-son’s World Series winner might not be viewed in the same light as those in the past who won with a full, 162-game season. But as long as each team is play-ing the same 60-game season and Major League Baseball is able to get through the postseason

without it being derailed by COVID-19, Clevinger sees it as an opportunity to view a season with added intensity.

“That would be almost like saying there’s a couple World Series that would mean less. If you do it the right way, 60 games is going to mean more than another World Series I know about, so, no,” Clevinger said via Zoom when asked if a title might mean less this year. “This is my opinion, it’s going to be some of the most exciting baseball you’ve seen. You’ve got a 60-game race to the end. Everybody’s in it. This

is going to be the time to watch baseball, I think. It’s going to get people back into it.”

Based on last year’s win-loss percentages, the Indians’ 60-game schedule consisting of AL Central and NL Central opponents is the second-easiest in baseball, behind only the rival Twins. Armed with a healthy Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez and one of the game’s best rotations, the Indians are brimming with perhaps even more optimism than they might have been in March. In baseball, everyone should expect the unexpected.

Reyes, DeShields cleared to return

Franmil Reyes, who was kept away from the team for a couple of days after he spent the Fourth of July around some people without a mask, was cleared by the club’s medical staff to return to the team.

Delino DeShields, who tested positive for COVID-19 just before summer camp opened, tested negative and was given the green light to travel to Cleveland. He’ll have to test negative again after a 24-hour period to re-join the team.

“He was obviously excited,” manager Terry Francona said via a Zoom call. “He seemed like he was in really good spirits.”
