CANADIAN POWERLIFTING UNION (CPU) CERTIFICATION
Transcript of CANADIAN POWERLIFTING UNION (CPU) CERTIFICATION
The primary objective of this coaching program is to develop coaches through a nationalized program for the Canadian Powerlifting Union. The proposed structure supports the needs of a National Certification Program through a standardized education process that will help coaches lead athletes and teams at Local, Provincial, National and International competitions. There are two streams in the certification program that will promote growth for the sport of powerlifting by providing safe training and competition environments and educate others (sports coaches, teachers and personal trainers) in proper Powerlifting techniques based on the CPU’s standards, ethics and integrity.
The Coaching stream is for coaches that want to develop athletes to compete in competitions. The Instructional stream is to teach individuals, personal trainers, and teachers the basics of powerlifting and how to teach beginners to perform the lifts properly in a group training setting.
The CPU certification course requires completion of a two-day workshop, applied coaching as well as a competency-based evaluation.
Michael Souster of Peak Power Development is the author and developer of the Canadian Powerlifting Union Coaching Certification. This certification will be the standard for coaching requirements for the sport of powerlifting in Canada. Michael is one of the coach developers of the CPU certification program in Alberta.

Powerlifting is a sport that combines the physical
capabilities of strength, power, explosiveness and flexibility. It involves three competitive movements: the Squat, the
Bench Press and the Deadlift. Competitors are categorized
into divisions based on age, sex and body weight. The highest
combined total weight in these three lifts ranks the competitors in their division. The competitor with the highest total wins the
contest for their division.
