You’re fresh out of high school, college, or university. You’re pounding the pavement, looking for a big break, a great opportunity, the career you’ve always dreamed of. You want a dynamic work environment, chal-lenging tasks, and a focus on young, eager employees like you, to ensure career growth and professional encouragement. The win-ners of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People have proven they’re focused on young people, with a multitude of programs and initiatives for hiring and motivating the younger generation of professionals.

“The job market today is very competitive, especially for young people,” says Kristina Leung, senior editor of the Canada’s Top

100 Employers project. “To recruit top talent, forward-thinking employers need to reach out to students and new grads and help them transition from school to the workplace.”

“New grads are interested in opportuni-ties for career development and advance-ment, especially workplaces where they can develop skills and gain meaningful work experience, says Leung. “The em-ployers selected for this year’s list under-stand that, and are committed to creat-ing a work environment in which young people can thrive.”

Now entering its 13th year, “Canada’s Top Employers for Young People” is an edito-

rial project that recognizes the country’s leaders in attracting and retaining younger workers. The competition reviews a variety of initiatives, including the availability of co-op and work-study programs, opportu-nities for mentoring, and training programs that develop workplace skills in young Ca-nadians starting their first careers.

“Employers are evaluated on programs and benefits that are of specific interest to young people, such as tuition assistance, financial support for professional accreditation, and career management services,” says Leung. “We received a record number of applica-tions this year, and reviewed a wide range of initiatives. Most of these programs don’t

cost a lot of money, but they provide young people with a place at the table and build the organization. Accessibility and trans-parency are crucial in creating a company culture that supports young people and en-courages them to excel.”

The development of the competition itself reflects the growing interest in the area by the nation’s most progressive employers. Prior to 2007, the competition was pub-lished annually as an appendix to the Can-ada’s Top 100 Employers paperback. Over the years, the Top 100 editors collected in-creasingly detailed information on a wide range of in-house training programs and targeted initiatives for younger workers.

Much of this research can be seen in the detailed “Reasons for Selection” that the editors publish, explaining why each of this year’s winning employers was selected.

“One of the key trends in this year’s compe-tition is that almost all progressive employers now offer some level of targeted recruitment programs for younger workers,” says Leung. “This year’s winners have each demonstrat-ed a commitment to nurturing young talent and helping them develop to their highest potential through programs like leadership training and job-rotation. They’ve also made an effort to be accessible to young people, whether through social media, career fairs, or on-campus recruitment.”

Noteworthy initiatives at this year’s win-ners include social or networking events for younger workers, to help them integrate and develop friendships at work, as well as in-house competitions that challenge young employees to become more inno-vative and think “outside the box”. These types of programs encourage employees to tap into their creative side and showcase their problem-solving skills – and some-times even reward them for great ideas.

At the end of the day, this year’s Canada’s Top Employers for Young People winners realize that investing in younger employ-ees is really an investment into the organi-zation’s future.

AltaGas believes that the key to attracting and retaining top talent is to provide con-tinuous opportunities to learn and grow staff careers. Promotion and transfer op-portunities and financial support, work experience and community-support op-portunities are offered to employees.

Recent university graduates will be in-terested in AltaGas’ new Graduate Pro-gram. Launched in 2007, the program facilitates career development for em-ployees with limited industry experience, by providing hands-on experience over a two-year period in different areas of the business. Summer, Co-Op, and Practi-cum student positions at AltaGas enable students with varying skill sets to put their education into practice and gain valu-able work experience. “This has been a win-win experience, with many students

coming back to AltaGas as regular em-ployees,” Erinn says.

AltaGas’ learning and development pro-grams assist employees in building their careers. The many volunteer opportuni-ties, in which employees are encouraged to participate, help forge close employ-ee-employer bonds, while helping to raise awareness and funds for charitable causes in fun and distinctive ways. Core programs help employees learn about and become engaged in the culture at AltaGas. Financial assistance for tuition is also available to employees who would like to augment their education, in order to move into other areas of the business or enhance their roles.

Formed even before Canadian Confed-eration and steeped in tradition, Labatt Breweries of Canada is known for 167 years of brewing excellence and its com-mitment to the communities in which it op-erates. Proud to be a member of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s leading brewer with over 200 quality brands, Labatt has a portfolio of over 60 beers, brewed in six breweries across Canada. Through inno-vation and constantly enhancing the con-sumer experience, Labatt has evolved from a small brewery in London, Ontario to an internationally heralded brewer.

Why you’ll lovE laBaTTIt’s not just Labatt’s beers that makes the

company an exciting place to be; its work environment is that of a “high perfor-mance culture,” according to Labatt’s vice-president of people, Agostino De Gasperis.

“We’re very passionate about creating meaningful experiences for our consum-ers,” he says. “The energy is high and the pride in our company, our heritage, and our brands is as strong as it’s ever been.”

Labatt believes in giving its employees the opportunity to gain insight into different aspects of its business very quickly, explains De Gasperis. “People aren’t assigned a role and left to figure it out; they’re immediately given a chance to learn and see how the op-eration works firsthand.”

Why laBaTT is diFFErEnTThe company’s goal of brewing excellence and the drive necessary to achieve it is what sets Labatt apart from other employers.

“We share this common dream of being the best beer company that brings people together for a better world,” he says. “That dream galvanizes everybody and keeps us energized.”

At Labatt, the concept of merit is strong and you get what you earn, whether it’s compensation or development and ca-reer opportunities. “This provides a great chance for people to grow and develop at their own pace, and we see some young people progressing through our organiza-

ThE pErKsBesides the obvious perk of working for a company that makes great-tasting beer, employees at Labatt have the chance to make an impact almost immediately.

“We don’t look at tenure as a prerequisite for someone to have a voice,” says De Gas-peris. “We’re looking for great ideas and initiatives and they could come from any-one.”

With regular exposure to senior manage-ment, which helps new employees develop their critical thinking and business leader-ship skills, Labatt has many advantages for those who are new to the company. This includes on-the-job training and develop-

ment opportunities via in-house talent pro-grams, both local and global, in all areas of the business -- from sales to operations.

“I can’t think of a better place for someone to get started early in their career and really benefit,” says De Gasperis. “Our employee development stacks up well against any company in Canada, and beyond.”

The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a large, research-intensive institution that ranks among the top 40 universities around the globe. More than 58,000 students (in-cluding over 10,000 international students) are enrolled in about 200 undergraduate programs and 300 grad programs. Sur-rounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Coast Mountains, and the woods of Pacific Spirit Regional Park, UBC’s largest campus in Vancouver is where snow-capped moun-tains meet the ocean, and breathtaking vistas greet you. The second major campus in Kelowna is situated in BC’s spectacular wine-growing region.

Why uBC is diFFErEnT“We truly are a global centre for research and teaching,” says Catherine Pitman, part

of UBC’s department of human resourc-es. “UBC is large and diverse in terms of the programs offered, particularly among universities in Western Canada.” In fact, UBC is so vast that it’s like a little city in itself, with world-class attractions. “The Vancouver campus includes the Museum of Anthropology, the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, and the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, which was a host venue for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games as well as the 2012 Davis Cup. People who work at these venues are employed by UBC.”

The university’s size and scope means there’s considerable diversity in the jobs available. “It’s really across the board,” Pitman explains. You could work in an

office setting or fill technical roles in a re-search lab and, of course, there are many people who work with students. You could work in IT, retail, the museum, a sports facility, a library, a farm, or a garden. The roles for students and grads cut across the entire campus; they’re not limited to a particular field.”

Why you’ll lovE uBC“If you’re happy and fulfilled in your life, then you’ll bring your best to your work,” says Pitman. UBC cares about people’s well-being, as shown by the benefits it of-fers: “Most full-time roles get three weeks of vacation to start, and some are eligible for four weeks. Flexible work options are also available. We offer free or discounted admission to on-campus attractions. You

The interest in your personal satisfac-tion extends to career and educational goals too. “We offer tuition waivers for academic courses and continuing educa-tion classes,” Pitman continues. “There are no space-permitting guidelines; if you meet the academic requirements, you’re in.” UBC also has many professional-development programs, including access to free one-on-one coaching and unique opportunities to build leadership skills, like Leave For Change, (a short-term, volunteer-abroad program) and the Com-munity Leadership Program, (a Vancou-ver-area community-service learning ini-tiative). Being a university, it has a relaxed environment that’s different from a for-

mal, corporate atmosphere. “For students, it eases the transition from student life to the workforce.”

“Extraordinary things happen here,” Pit-man says. “UBC is a big, complex place. To be successful here, you have to be a self-starter with a passion for learning and trying new things. There are so many dif-ferent things you can do, and it’s up to you to go out and explore.”
