Every game begins with an opening. And players allover the world have been studying them for centuries. So it’s not surprising how much information we have onchess openings. Thousands of books are written, anduncountable hours are spent, in the never-ending searchto find the perfect moves!

Because openings get a lot of attention, there is a largevocabulary about them. There are hundreds of namesfor the different openings, and many special words todescribe typical moves. Lucky for us, it’s fun to learn thissecret language! Let’s begin with some general terms:

develop : To “develop a piece” means to move it fromits starting square on the first rank to a moreactive position. We use this word with knights, bishops, rooks, and queens. But not withpawns or kings.

fianchetto : A special way of developing the bishops. We“fianchetto a bishop” by advancing the b-pawnor g-pawn one square and putting the bishopbehind it (on b2, g2, b7, or g7). Many openingsfeature fianchettoed B’s.

‘Fianchetto’ is an Italian word for ‘little flank’.“Fian-” rhymes with the name Ian.)

The English Opening 1.c4 usually includes a kingsidefianchetto. 1...e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.g3 Nc6 4.Bg2gambit : A pawn sacrifice in the opening. The pawn is

given up to get a quick attack, to gain centralcontrol, or to speed development.

countergambit : A gambit by Black, especially when itis played against a White gambit.

The most famous gambit is theKing’s Gambit. 1.e4 e5 2.f4

White aims for something like:2...exf4 3.Nf3 h6 4.d4

But if black is feeling brave, they can choose the FalkbeerCountergambit 2...d5!? Whitecan go totally wrong then with3.fxe5? Qh4+! A better line is3.exd5 e4 4.d3. variation : A “variation” is any “series of moves”. It also

refers to a common “line of play” within an opening. Most openings have several variations, each with its

own name. The French Defence 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 has theAdvance Variation 3.e5; Exchange Variation 3.exd5;Tarrasch Variation 3.Nd2, and Classical Variation 3.Nc3.There are also “subvariations”. Against 3.Nc3, Black canplay the Winawer Variation 3...Bb4!?

The “main line” of the Winawer goes 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d53.Nc3 Bb4 4.e5 c5 5.a3 Bxc3+ 6.bxc3. But the “theory” ofthis opening goes much deeper. Many “book lines” havebeen analyzed out to the endgame. Some masters getexcited if they find a new idea (“innovation”) on move 25!

Books often divide openings into three general groups.“Open games” are those that start with 1.e4 e5. Theynormally lead to lots of open lines. In “closed games”,such as the Queen’s Gambit 1.d4 d5 2.c4 and the IndianDefence 1.d4 Nf6, there are usually fewer pawn trades, somore lines stay closed. Of course, there is everything inbetween. The “semi-open games” include all replies to1.e4 other than 1...e5. The most popular is the SicilianDefence 1.e4 c5.

Did you notice that the Sicilianis exactly the same as the English1.c4 e5, except with the coloursswitched?

There are also other “reversedopenings”. For example, the BirdOpening 1.f4 d5 is a reversedDutch Defence 1.d4 f5. Or is theDutch a reversed Bird?!

Sometimes we start off in one opening, but end up inanother. A popular l ine of the Russian Defence goes

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4 5.d3 Nf6 6.d4 d5.Amazingly, this “transposes” to a position in the FrenchExchange variation 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 exd5 4.Nf3 Nf6.Strange, eh?

All the major chess openingsare listed on the next two pages, along with their defining moves. Many were named for the countrywhere they were first played.Others are named after masterswho played or invented them, likeworld champion Alekhine 1.e4 Nf6.There are even animal names!Did you ever play the Rat? Orface an Orangutan?

Don’t count the Bird in that group though. It’s named forEnglishman Henry Bird!

PARADE

PAWNSON

PARADEIt was a beautiful grey New Year’s Day. A pleasant chill

and a promise of snow filled the air. Everybody in Chesstown was down on Main Street for

the big parade. The sidewalks were lined with moms anddads and smiling kids. What a great way to celebrate theend of the holiday season! The king and queen led the parade, waving to the crowd

from their royal float. They were followed by Biff the B,the master of ceremonies. He was riding on top of the starattraction: Titania the Elephant! She travelled all the wayfrom Africa just to be part of the show.

Next came Kiril and the other pawns. They were playingin the band. After a year of practice, they were finallyready to perform in public. Their first number was called“March of the Hip Hop Hooray”, written by and featuringPing Lee on the cymbals!

Between songs, the pawns talked to the spectators andjoked around. Moe and Larry kept saying funny thingsabout walking behind an elephant.

“I sure hope she doesn’t let a fart!”“Oh yea, and you know what would be even worse?”Luckily it was time for another tune before anyone could

answer that question.Jay Pawn raised his baton and

the band began to play. It wasKiril’s favourite, an old Beatlessong named “Yellow Submarine”.All the kids were singing alongas they marched by!

It was the best New Year’sparade ever. And that’s not all.Afterwards, the king and queenthrew a special party for Titania.

When they presented her with akey to the city, Biff made thespeech. He was really proud toexplain that ‘elephant’ was theRussian word for bishop!

Page 15: CANADA'S CHESS MAGAZINE FOR KIDS DECEMBER 2015 … · 2018-06-15 · Chess Notation 50 Solutions 51 4 Scholar’s Mate 130 HOLIDAY CHESS CCAMPS TORONTO The Chess Studio 701 Mt. Pleasant

After the pawns filled up on snacks, they decided to playsome chess. There were no tables, but Kiril had a greatidea. He set up a board on his drum!

Lily and Frizoon wanted to meetTitania, so they went over andinvited her for a game.

That made the elephant reallyhappy, because she wanted tomeet them too! And besides, Biffhad been talking her ears off. Youknow how he can be!

Titania chose Lily as her opponent, and everybodygathered around to watch the game.

4. e3 Lily prepares to develop herother bishop so she cancastle.

4. . . . c5

Before bringing the knightto its natural spot on c6,Black first builds a betterpawn centre by advancingthe c-pawn.

5. Bb5+

5. . . . Nc6Titania isn’t worried hereabout doubled c-pawns,since 6.Bxc6+ bxc6 wouldactually make her pawnstructure stronger.( 5...Bd7 6.Bxd7+ Nbxd7also leads to a level game.)

6. Ne5 The knight hops into itsideal outpost and attacksthe pinned knight on c6.

1. Nf3Lily usually begins 1.d4,

but she also opens withher knight sometimes.

1. . . . d5Titania winked an eye, thenmade her move.

2. b3

NIMZOVICH ATTACKWhite plans to fianchettoa bishop on b2 and takecharge of the long darkdiagonal. Controlling thee5 square is an importantgoal in this opening.

2. . . . Nf6

The elephant was quitegood at using her trunkto pick up the pieces. Butof course, they did get alittle wet!

3. Bb2 e6Titania wants to avoiddoubled f-pawns if Whitetakes on f6. Now 4.Bxf6can be met by 4...Qxf6.(Books recommend 3...Bg4! 4.e3 e6 with equality.)

11. . . . g6?

Titania “stops” the whitequeen from going to h5. Butshe also seriously weakensthe a1-h8 diagonal.

Wait until you see whatshe missed!

Black comes under attackafter 11...Nxe5 12.fxe5 Bxe513.Qh5 (13...h6? 14.Bxe5or 13...f6 14.Qxh7+).

Against 11...f5, White canstack up on the h-file with12.Qh5 Nf6 13.Qh4 thoughBlack is fine after 13...h6.

It’s not easy to find, butthe best defence is 11...f6!After 12.Nf3? e5, the blackpieces take over the centre,so White should attack with12.Nxd7! Qxd7 13.Qh5 orthe crazy 12.Qh5!? fxe513.Qxh7+ Kf7 14.Rg3.

Okay, folks, here it is:

12. Qh5!HOLY CHESSARONI !Lily is playing like a genius. She must have taken hervitamins this morning.

Biff got so excited by thismove, he almost fell off hisseat on the back of theelephant. Luckily, Titaniahad seat belts installed!

8. Bxc6+

Lily eliminates the blackknight with check.

8. . . . bxc6

9. f4!

This is the key move for Whitein the battle to command e5.

9. . . . 0 -0

After Titania castled, shelooked around at the newfriends she had met andsmiled.

Frizoon was standing closeby and petted her on thehead. But not for too long.

It wouldn’t be polite todistract her while she wasthinking!

10. Rf3

This rook lift is anotheradvantage of advancing thef-pawn. The rook can nowattack on the h-file from infront of his own pawns.

10. . . . Nd7

The elephant sticks to herplan and continues to fightagainst the white knight inthe centre.

11. Rh3!

W o W ! Is Lily amazing orwhat? She ignores the threatto capture on e5 and goesright for the king. (11.Nxd7Bxd7 would make things easyfor Black.)

Awesome tactics by MissLily. The parade and theparty really inspired her.The black knight is forced

13. . . . gxh5 What else can she do?

Not 13...Nxh5 14.Nh6#! or13...Nxg4 14.Qxh7#.

Everybody applauded Lily. Titania cheered too! Sheraised her trunk and gave a big roar. It sounded just likea giant trumpet. Kiril thought she should join the band!

The party lasted several hours, so there was lots moretime for chess. They all took turns playing with thefriendly elephant.

And guess what? Titania won the rest of her games, including a rematch with Lily.

Finally the day came to a happy end, but it wasn’t theend of the fun for Lily and Kiril. They got a ride home onthe elephant.

50 Scholar’s Mate 130

It's easy. The board has 8 filesand 8 ranks. Files are the rowsof squares that go up and down. Each one is named by a smallletter. Ranks are rows that gosideways. Each one is namedby a number.Every square also has a name.

The first part is its file and thesecond part is its rank. In thisdiagram, a white pawn movedto e4 and a black pawn to e5.

When moves are written down, the first capital letter shows thepiece which moves. Q is queen.B is bishop. R is rook. N is usedfor knight because the king is K.If there is no capital letter, thatmeans a pawn moves.

Next is the square that thepiece moves to. Bc4 says that abishop moves to the square c4.When a piece is captured, an xis put before the square. Qxf7means a queen takes on f7.

If a pawn captures, the letterof the file it starts on is givenfirst, then an x followed by thesquare it takes on. exd5 says apawn on the e-file captures onthe square d5.

When two pieces of the samekind can go to the same spot, another letter is put after thepiece to show what file it camefrom. Rae1 tells us that a rookon the a-file moves to e1.

If the pieces that can move tothe same spot are on the samefile, then their rank number isadded. N6e4 means the knighton the 6th rank moves to e4.
