Removing Fire Hoses from Highrise Buildings - An Alternative Solution Approach
38 mm (1.5”) occupant use fire hose has been an albatross for both building owners and responding firefighters for years as they require costly 5 year testing/replacement and are prone to vandalism/theft and malicious use. The Ontario Fire Code requires it to be labelled ‘For Use By Trained Personnel Only’ but who actually trains building occupants to not only deploy the hose but to fight a fire without any PPE? The City of Toronto Fire & Life Safety Program Office has worked in partnership with Toronto Fire Service to develop an approved Alternative Solution Proposal (ASP) to remove the 38mm occupant use firehose from our largest high rise office tower, Metro Hall at 55 John Street. The methodology, requirements and impacts of removing the hoses that were considered through the ASP will be discussed.
