School uniforms has been taking over lately in public and private schools. All over the United States it has been very debatable on whether if its discipline or lack of self-expression for students. The question is, Can School Uniforms Bring Discipline in Schools? Lets have a debate between Tim Gunn, Betsey Johnson, and Coco Chanel.
Tim Gunn- “So perhaps the real secret to style is filling yourself to the absolute brim with engagement. Loving not wisely, but too well and all that.” Suck It up!! There is nothing wrong with engaging in something more different. When you get into the world of “Work” and “Career” you are bound to wear suits, but its up to you to make it work. It is quite the discipline. Who
dares to enter a place of business in saggy jeans or tight yeast infection looking clothing? Pros of School Uniforms:
• Help Prevent Gang Activity • Encourage Discipline • Help students resist peer pressure • Help Identify Intruders • Improve Attendance • Increase a sense of belonging and school pride.
Betsey Johnson- “You have to hold onto your fantasy” Fashion, style, whatever you want to call it is EXPRESSION! Students should be allowed to wear what they want and how they want to wear. If it’s their fantasy to walk into an English class with a Ballerina outfit they
should! It doesn’t get any more boring they you have to look so conservative. Cons of School Uniforms
• Violate a students right of freedom of speech • Make students a target of being bullied by other
schools • Are a financial burden for poor families • AN unfair additional expense for parents who
pay taxes for a free public education. • Tends to be too strict on students • Can’t prevent all types of violence on campus
In a New York Times article “Dress For Success” talks about how many schools nation chooses uniforms as a rule. Many over the years have opposed to school uniforms. As it stated “While the whole concept of public school uniforms would probably have aroused strong opposition 10 or 20 years ago, from those seeing it as a stifling of students' self-expression, an attempt to infringe on their individuality, some see it as a sign of the times that few such complaints are being heard. In the article “Do School Uniforms Make Schools Better” it approached a debate about School Uniforms vs School Dress codes. It stated that dress codes are much less restrictive than uniform policies, and a uniform policy makes it much easier for administration.
Coco Chanel- “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” It’s great to have uniforms, and it’s also great to have your own sense of styles. If uniforms are a rule then that is what you must follow. It’s many ways students can self-express
themselves with a uniform. I understand the frustration some may have, but if it is a rule it is a rule.
If schools had more of a “Dress Code” would more students be more discipline than having an actual school uniform? Is a school uniform more better than for the school environment?
