Can Crusher 1000X

Initial Ideas
Our initial ideas included a pretty bad sketch done on the whiteboard, then we went to our first
build, which ended up having to have been scrapped due to the nature of the syringes being so
tight that they would rather blow open the tubes than crush the can.
Schematic design
Functionality
We decided to go with only one can.
Probably not user friendly, due to the fact that we did not have time to put on a lever system, or
have a button system.
IMA Calculations
Our force sensors maxed out creating an undefinable scenario
Also, we didn’t add a lever system which would have boosted our IMA
IMA= 1
However, without a can, approximately 9 lbs of force. With the area of 3.1 inches. To get a
pressure of 2.91 psi.
P=F/A
P=9lb/3.1in2
P=2.91psi
Mistakes and Ways to Improve
Our biggest mistake was on 4-25-18, when we knew that there was a problem with our design,
but we insisted on going on and trying to make it just barely work than just starting anew. We
kept trying to take shortcuts in the project, instead of just taking the time to figure out a
permanent solution, we kept putting in temporary fixes that would just cause a new problem.
Things we Learned
1. It is stupidly hard to crush a can. Those things seem really easy to crush with your foot,
but that is instant force, as opposed to our prolonged lesser force.
2. There are no shortcuts in life, it is best to figure out how to get something to work the first
time around.
3. Sometimes it’s good to just take a step back, calm down, and look at the project in a
different way.
