Can a 14 year old truck get better mileage?

Can an older, high mileage truck get better mileage? Lets find out! Test vehicle : 1997 Chevy Blazer 4x4, 4.3L V6. Automatic Transmission. 134,338 miles Maintenance: Air filter, oil and oil filter change every 3 moths or 3000 miles. Spark plugs changed every 12,000 miles or 12 months. Tire pressure checked weekly (44 psi) Mileage : average 18 mpg combined city and highway. 65 miles daily. Steady 55-60 miles an hour on highway. What was changed : Spark plugs (Champions) Oil (whatever was on sale) 5 qts. Oil filter (Fram) Air filter (Fram) What was done : Warmed up engine and added Amsoil Engine and Transmission flush. Let engine idle for 15 minutes. Sprayed intake and throttle body with Amsoil Power Foam engine cleaner and let soak for 15 minutes. Start engine and idle for 5 minutes. Sprayed intake once more. Removed Champion spark plugs and replaced with 6 NGK V-Power spark plugs (NGK 2238-EA) Removed Fram air filter and installed Amsoil EAA04 EA air filter. Drained oil and removed Fram oil filter and replaced with 5 qts Amsoil SAE 5W-30 100% synthetic oil and Amsoil EAO23 EA oil filter. Added Amsoil P.I. Performance Improver Gasoline Additive to full fuel tank (1 bottle). 2 weeks later : average mileage (same driving conditions) : 24.2 MPG! On 87 octane gasoline. This is my daughters daily driver to and from work in Indiana. Winter temps are 8 – 34 degrees. Lots of snow and ice. Before the work was done, the truck took several seconds of cranking to start. Now it starts with a quick tap of the starter and idles very smooth. People will balk at the expense of replacing their oil with pure synthetics just for a few mpg gain. But look at it this way---no oil and filter changes for a minimum of 1 year! After 15,000 miles, I will send a sample of the oil for analysis and see if the oil has to be changed or not.

Can an older, high mileage truck get better mileage?Lets find out!

Test vehicle : 1997 Chevy Blazer 4x4, 4.3L V6. Automatic Transmission. 134,338 miles

Maintenance: Air filter, oil and oil filter change every 3 moths or 3000 miles. Spark plugs changed every 12,000 miles or 12 months. Tire pressure checked weekly (44 psi) Mileage : average 18 mpg combined city and highway. 65 miles daily. Steady 55-60 miles an hour on highway.

What was changed : Spark plugs (Champions) Oil (whatever was on sale) 5 qts. Oil filter (Fram) Air filter (Fram)

What was done : Warmed up engine and added Amsoil Engine and Transmission flush.

Also its not just a few mpg! Its a 25% increase! From 18 mpg to over 24 mpg. I believe thats worth it!

The real money savings comes from extended oil changes – from every 3 months/3000 miles to up to 24 months/24,000 miles. I did say “up to”! As I said, the oil will be analyzed

at 15,000 miles and we'll see then. The mileage and performance gains are very noticeable.

On the day the oil was changed it was 20 degrees outside. It was noticed that the Amsoil 5W-30 flowed very easily out of the bottle, not thick like conventional oil.

Hmmm—easier cranking/starting in very cold weather and a 25% increase in mileage from a 14 year old truck with over 133,000 miles. No oil or filter changes for a MINIMUM

of 15,000 miles. Wonder what it would do for a new vehicle?

My grandson has replace the oil and plugs (with Amsoil oil and filters and NGK plugs) in

his Honda Passport a few days ago. He also used the Power Foam to clean his throttle body and used P.I. in a full gas tank. He'll give me a report next week and I will relay it

then.
