[+] Get involved

Being a successful student means being able to maximize your own performance in the various kinds of assessment you will meet. Therefore as you go about your studies, it is worth spending time ensuring you study effectively.

Successful learning involves wanting to learn, needing to learn, learning by doing, learning from feedback and making sense of what has been learned (Race, 2003). Ultimately it is not how much you know, but how well you show what you know in exams and in coursework assessments that will determine your success.

Make the most of the opportunities for personal and academic growth during your student experience. Use Campus Connections to help you meet new people, try new activities and be open to new ideas. Introduce yourself to other people, as a good social network will help you meet academic challenges. The more you access the Student Services, use the facilities, and get involved in university life, the more you will benefit both personally and academically.

Make your Victoria

Student ID card

work for you!

If you do not have your Vic Student ID card, go to: victoria.ac.nz/st_services/newstudents/before/faqs.aspx#q14 (or scan the QR code)

Carry your card with you—it has a number of uses:

It has your Vic ID number, which you will need to know.

It gives entry to streamed classes.

You need it to use printers and photocopiers—‘follow me’ printing allows you to send your document to a printer, and continue working until you’re ready to collect your printing. Hold your Student ID card against the printer reader to release your documents. For photocopying, hold your Student ID card against the reader and start copying.

Use it in the Library for self-service issuing; borrowing books, laptops or headphones; and using course reserve material.

You need it for Faculty office enquiries, appointments with student advisers and other Faculty staff, requests for documentation such as transcripts, fees assessments, and to add/drop course(s).

It gives you entry into examinations.

You need it to collect assignments from Schools.

It gives you access to student services such as Student Health and Counselling.

It gives you after-hours access to computer labs and some halls of residence.

It gives student discounts for the Cable Car, movies, restaurants, some theatres, travel, etc.

You will be expected to complete different types of university assessments. While the academic essay is the most common written assessment, you may also be asked to write reports, literature reviews, journals and research proposals.

Remember, writing is developmental and everyone continues to learn new writing skills. You learn through the very act of writing, and the more conscious you are of what you are doing when you write, the better you will write and learn (Crème & Lea, 2003).

Therefore, with knowledge of key writing skills and practice you will begin to see how to write your academic essays and identify what academic staff are looking for when they grade your assignments.

Academic writingThese sessions are useful for getting started with your assignments. They will include an overview of the essay writing process including analysis, thinking, planning, and essay structure.

Student Health Service Te Ratonga Hauora Tauira—provides quality healthcare for you while you are a student at Vic.

The Student Health Service (SHS) is staffed by fully qualified, experienced doctors and nurses. Our central clinic is located on the Kelburn campus, with a satellite clinic operating five days per week at Pipitea campus. The SHS offers all the services you would expect from a regular medical centre, including:

Preventative care—such as blood pressure checks and cholesterol testing, cervical screening, skin and mole checks, health education, advice regarding sexual and reproductive health, travel health (including the administration of the most commonly-required vaccinations), immigration, and diving medicals. The seasonal influenza vaccine is available from March and we recommend this especially for students who have ongoing health conditions or who live in shared accommodation.

Illness and injury care—assessment, diagnosis, treatment, advice, and when necessary referral to medical specialists for injuries, infections and acute illness. We also have a dedicated Student Health Plus nurse who sees students with ongoing health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, depression, and anxiety.

Contraception and sexual health—sexual health checks, contraception including the emergency contraceptive pill, pregnancy tests, and related health advice. The HPV vaccine, to help prevent cervical cancer, is available. The vaccine is free for young female New Zealand residents, as long as they have their first vaccine before their 20th birthday. For other students there is a charge.

Other services—smoking cessation, liquid nitrogen, minor surgery, nutritional advice, hearing tests, lung function, and electrocardiograms (ECGs).

Specialist appointments with a dermatologist (skin specialist), endocrinologist (to see students who have Type I Diabetes), dietitian, or psychiatrist are available at our main clinic on the Kelburn Campus, via referral from our doctors.

We are a Very Low Cost Access practice and you have the option of enrolling with Capital PHO through Student Health, which reduces the cost of your health care.
