Campbellsport School Board mended the board stick with just two classes in the sixth grade. They didn’t like the idea of the split class for these grade levels. “You are still going to have bigger classes,” Strand said. “Scheduling would be a nightmare and with scheduling you lose education time. We are recommending two large classes.” Strand explained that the last time CES had a split fifth and sixth grade class, it worked out fine. Since then, they have added a literacy block and some other things. Be- cause of this, the schedul- ing problems that would be created having a class with both fifth and sixth grade students would not be a good thing academically. Board members agreed and again, no motion was made to change the staffing plan. This means that next year CES will have three fifth grade classes and two sixth grade classes. The sixth grade rooms are expected to have about 31 students each, which is fairly large but Strand thought it would be workable. After these big decisions were made, Jay Miller, board president, started talking with the board about an advisory commit- tee to come up with a short-term and a long-term plan for the facilities in the district. According to Miller’s plan, a recommen- dation on the reconfigura- tion of the elementary schools will be proposed no later than January 7, 2013. A long-term plan for the junior/senior high building would be ready by July 1, 2013. Once these proposals are done, the board will then hold more listening sessions. They hope to get a lot of feedback from the residents and busi- ness people of the district. After the listening ses- sions, the board will con- tinue to look at the plan and make a definite deci- sion on the future of the buildings in the district. Miller would like the committee to consist of Jim McCready who would be the chair. He would be joined by fellow board members Mike Weiss, chair of the facilities com- mittee, and Deb Senn, chair of the curriculum committee. Administrator Dan Olson would be on the commit- tee along with one building principal in the district. Miller would like one teacher from CES, EES and the junior/senior high school. Finally, he asked for four members at large. These members would be resi- dents of the district, par- ents in the district, and/or business people in the dis- trict. Miller would like peo- ple from different areas of the district with different backgrounds and needs to help look at all angles in this proposal. This group would start meeting as soon as possi- ble to start working on the plans. The board ap- proved the formation of the committee at this board meeting. At the next board meeting on Monday, May 7, the board will offi- cially approve the mem- bers of the committee. “They will hold open meetings, so anyone is invited,” Miller said. He encouraged people to attend the meetings to listen to what the commit- tee talks about and to give ideas to committee mem- bers. Olson suggested updat- ing the enrollment projec- tion so the committee has a better idea of the possi- ble student population in the future. A formal study was done in the district a few years ago. Olson stat- ed that this study could be updated fairly easily. “Once it (a plan) comes to the board, then we would schedule listening session, staff meetings, whatever we need,” Miller said. Anyone who is interest- ed in sitting on this com- mittee should contact Jay Miller. The board approved, with regrets, the retire- ment of Candace Roth. She has been a mathe- matics teacher in the dis- trict for 30 years. Board members ap- proved the hiring of Tammy Schunck as a high school math teacher and Nicole Stern as a junior high math teacher. Olson explained that the district had just completed final interviews for the junior high math teacher position when they received Roth’s notice of retirement. They decided to offer the high school posi- tion right away because the top two candidates for the junior high position were exceptional and qualified for the position.
