End of Year Concert The end of year concert will be held, weather permitting, on the field starting at 5.30 pm on Tuesday 16 December. The junior classes (Years 0 - 2) will perform at 5.30pm followed by Years 3 - 6 who will commence their performance at approximately 6.00pm. Kapa haka will also perform. The concert is expected to be completed by about 6.30 - 6.40 pm. The concert provides the opportunity for our community to get together to enjoy singing and dance performed by the children in a picnic atmosphere on the field. There is no cost and you are welcome to bring along food and refreshments. For those of you who are new to the school, this is a fairly informal occasion although the children work hard to perform well given the challenges of singing outdoors. Should the weather not permit the concert to take place on Tuesday evening the postponement date is Wednesday 17 December at 11.00am. This will allow those of you who are coming to collect your children from school at 12.30pm to enjoy the concert. Fingers crossed for a warm, still and windless evening on 16 December. Hopefully, we will get rid of the foul weather by then!

Sharing Food at School There has been increasing concern expressed about the sharing of what could probably best be described as 'sweet treats' by children to other children, often when celebrating special occasions.

A once or twice a year event when a child might have something given to them because of a special event has become very much an everyday / week event that takes place without parental consent.

Hence, we are going to trial a 'no sharing of special occasion food at school' regime. Please refer to page 4 of the newsletter to find out the details. You will also find a 'Food - Hot tips for Parents' section from the Ministry of Education.

Wanted - Jam Jars!

Can you help us please? The Year 6 team require medium/small clean, no labels, jam jars. Please deliver to Nikki Urlich in the school office, as soon as possible. Many thanks.

Sharing: To Eat It or Not To Eat It

The Issue

That is the question. And what a question it is proving to be in this age of huge choice and so many opportunities to eat so many different foods. It is most certainly a first world dilemma and one that, as a school, we have to address. Until now we have largely taken the view that ‘market forces’ would prevail in terms of what children brought to school to share on special occasions to them. In recent times, as a school, we have been challenged to justify children being given food by other children that could best be described as ‘sweet treats.’ On reflection, our response of telling children they must take the goodies home to ask their parents if they can eat it has not been as successful as we would have liked. This is particularly so given that a trend appears to have emerged whereby many children come to school on their birthday with sweet treats for their classmates. As the reality is that many of the treats don’t get home before being consumed many children are eating food that has not been approved of by their parents. (Surprise, surprise!) Hence, we are rethinking our approach to what a child eats at school that has not been supplied by their parents. Here is what it looks like. The Information

We went to the Ministry of Education and downloaded their ‘Hot Tips for Parents’ re food. (Attached.) We believe the tips are relevant to school as well. While many of the tips are clearly aimed at the home situation, a number of the suggestions apply equally to the school setting, namely:

Avoid using food or drink as a treat or reward – a special activity can be used instead. Avoid calling ‘good’ or ‘bad’ food – instead say ‘every day’ and ‘sometimes food’. Treat overload. A treat is not a treat if it happens every day! Check how often your children have treat foods.

Have ‘everyday’ foods for everyday occasions, like school, and keep treats for special occasions like parties. Continued on next page

Page 5: Campbells Bay School Newsletter November 17

Two Important Notes:

We are, absolutely not talking about what parents provide their own children to eat at school. What is in lunch boxes for eating at school by your child and supplied and/or ordered by you is entirely a matter for you to determine. We are not going there! What we are referring to is what children bring to school for sharing with other children.

We are aware that there are differing views regarding what constitutes healthy food and we are not wishing to

enter that debate either! Rather, we are sticking to the aforementioned Ministry of Education tips. The Solution (we hope)

Using the Ministry of Education suggestions we will trial the following and see how we go.

As ‘sometimes’ food can quickly become ‘everyday’ food when there is ‘treat overload’ we ask that children do not bring sweet treats to school to share with other children to celebrate birthdays or special days for particular families. As we approach Christmas, this applies to ‘candy canes’ and other festive sweet treats. If you wish to provide something special to your child’s classmates to mark a special occasion for your child, we suggest something other than food such as stickers, stationery, cards or special messages. However, please be aware the school has no expectation that such sharing is necessary.

As a school we will modify our ways in view of the Ministry suggestions as well. This means that we will not have

food rewards such as jelly beans from the principal or breakfast at McDonalds for winning classes in ‘athons. As has been stated, there are numerous non-food treats that can be on offer.

In the context of ‘sometimes’ food we will still have the occasional class party where this type of food might be

available but, as a parent, should you wish your child not to have any sweet items you can notify the class teacher of this in advance. Please note that this does not apply to class cooking where children create their own culinary masterpieces as class cooking can occur with little prior notice. However, if you do not want your child to eat anything created during class cooking sessions please remind your child about this. Teachers will certainly be sensitive to any child who does not take part in the eating stage.

In Conclusion

This is a start. It is a trial. We will see how it goes. As mentioned, I am aware there are various points of view in terms of food. What we are attempting to do is to create a ‘food consuming environment’ that seems to be about right and fulfils the intent of the Ministry tips. Please do feel free to communicate your thoughts with me: [email protected] NOTE: Information below comes from the Ministry of Education

Hot tips for parents Children and young people need healthy food for their bodies and brains to work properly. Get them into healthy habits with these tips.

Keep a variety of fresh vegetables and fruit on hand for snacks. Encourage children to drink water throughout the day. Service it in a jug with ice. You could add slices of orange,

strawberry, kiwifruit or lemon. Hooked on sweet drinks? Wean your children off gradually by making water the only option at breakfast, then add

lunch, then dinner. Soon they’ll be drinking water with meals all the time Eat in season– seasonal vegetables and fruit are the cheapest, freshest and tastiest.

“What should we eat at our main meal?” Try meat (size of the palm of your hand), add some rice/pasta/potato

and plenty of vegetables or salad. Eat together as a family as often as possible Avoid using food or drink as a treat or reward – a special activity can be used instead. Cook a meal with your children once a week – you’ll be surprised what they can do, and their future flatmates will

thank you! Help children stay active – it’s a great way to have some fun and spend time together. If you have time, eat breakfast with your children – it sets everyone up for the day. Avoid calling food ‘good’ or ‘bad’ – instead try ‘everyday’ and ‘sometimes’ food. Treat overload. A treat is not a treat if it happens every day! Check how often your children have treat foods.

Have ‘everyday’ foods for everyday occasions, like school, and keep treats for special occasions like parties. ‘Lighten up’ and use reduced fat versions of mayonnaise, coconut cream, cream cheese, minced beef and milk

(for children over two). Try foods from a range of different countries and cultures for new flavours, colours, textures and aromas. Offer children a variety of healthy foods – different types, colours, textures, flavours, smells and temperatures –

so they get all the nutrients they need. Introduce wholegrain bread by making it the only option for toast or by making sandwiches with one wholegrain

slice and one white. Get more vegetables and fruit into their diet – fruit smoothies, carrot sticks before dinner, savoury/fruit muffins,

grated vegetables in mince/bolognaise/homemade hamburgers. Pack an extra sandwich or piece of fruit for that after school hunger! Bananas make a great snack for hungry children. Take fruit to keep them going when collecting your children

from their ECE service or school. Try swapping:

chocolate biscuits with plain fruit biscuits potato chips with plain popcorn fruit juice with a whole piece of fruit ice cream with yoghurt chocolate bars with dried fruit or nuts
