Annual CEEC Report 2019-20 CAMPAIGNS SOS: Waste Management campaign (1 st July- 5 th December, 2019) The students of classes 9th of the environment council along with Ms Adita Saxena conducted a small talk in senior and junior school to sensitise students about the harmful effects of single use plastic. The students of nursery were encouraged by Nandita ma’am to carry steel tiffins which they did. The talk ended by urging the students to contribute in the recycling campaign done at school. Harsha, Ashim, Nehul, Vrinda, Deepti, Meagan conducted the Session with Grade 7 - on Waste Management. They began with an energiser and a game to introduce them to the concept of Waste. A discussion on sources and types of Waste was led, with a special focus on plastic waste and microplastics. Later, what happens to our waste (how it is managed) and what effects do waste mismanagement have on us was discussed with the students.of not only class 7 but Eco club students of class 8 and 10 also. The environment council collects plastic packs, tetrapaks, plastic bottles, bottle caps, milk packets, paper, aluminium foil, e- waste, bedsheets etc. for recycling. Out of these tetrapaks, aluminium foil, e- waste and paper goes to Development Links Foundation ; Shaynaecounified takes plastic lids and pens for recycling; Max Exchange takes milk packets ; Kutumbaka Foundation takes books ; Jhola Chap takes bedsheets for making cloth bags; Toxic Links takes plastic bottles ; Goonj takes clothes and same is sent to Earth Saviours Foundation.

CAMPAIGNS

The students of classes 9th of the environment council along with Ms Adita Saxena

conducted a small talk in senior and junior school to sensitise students about the

harmful effects of single use plastic.

A best out of waste activity was conducted on 21st December, 2019, in which a dress

was made with tissue paper flowers and a base of organic cotton was used. A blue

sharara with organic cotton, pencil shavings, a top of jute, drape with jute strips , straws,

tissue paper fringes and jute clutch were made.

As per the Eco club schedule for the month of January an activity was organised for

classes 8th and 9th in the Work Ex. periods on 23rd January, 2019, where in children

expressed their views on the topic - Waste as a resource. Children of class 8th

made a class board using waste materials.

Play on Saving Wildlife

The students of class 7th of the environment council presented a play on 14th January,2020, to

sensitise students of class 7th about the need take effective measures to save animals and

stand against poaching and destroying their natural habitat.The students prepared the skit

under the guidance of Ms Adita Saxena.

Play on Healthy Eating Habits

The students of class 7th of the environment council presented a play on 13th November, 2019,

to sensitise students of classes 6th and 7th about the need to eat healthy food and even told

them about the harmful effects of an unbalanced diet.

SAY NO TO FIRE CRACKERS Campaign

Owing to the approaching festive season, Delhi Public School Vasant Kunj organised a

Comprehensive Anti-Fire Cracker Campaign in the school from 21st to 25th October,

2019. Various activities and events were planned and carried out in the school to

sensitize the students about the dangerous repercussions of the heavy use of fire-

crackers.

House meetings of the six houses of the school were also organised for the students,

where the House Wardens and the House Tutors addressed the students and talked

about celebrating Diwali, Chhath and other festivals using earthen lamps, candles and

green crackers. The Heads of the houses educated the student community about the

several safer and greener ways of celebrating Diwali.

Special assemblies were organised for all classes to stress on the need to have a

‘green and eco-friendly Diwali'. The ill-effects of the bursting crackers were highlighted

in the assemblies. A Nukkad Natak was presented by the members of the School's

Environment Club emphasising the same. The Nukkad Natak enlightened the student

audience about the harmful toxic pollutants like Sulphur-dioxide, carbon monoxide etc.

which are released while bursting crackers and cause serious ailments especially in

elderly people and children. The School Principal, Ms. Bindu Sehgal then took a pledge

along with the students to abstain from the burning of crackers and keeping Delhi

Pollution-free. The students were motivated to ‘Say No to Crackers’ and were educated

about the excessive use of child labour in the fire-cracker making industries.

A display board was made by the students to enlighten the student community about

the growing air and noise pollution and the related diseases caused due to the

excessive bursting of the fire-crackers.

To rejoice the festivities in the right way, a Diya-Decoration Activity was organised for

the students. The children enjoyed the activity and decorated earthen lamps in multiple

creative ways and designs. An Inter-House Rangoli Competition was also organised in

this regard where students made vibrant rangolis with eco-friendly materials such as-

sawdust, turmeric, chalk powder, vermilion etc.

FIT INDIA PLOGGING (2nd October, 2019)

In compliance with the directives of DOE and the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call for a

mass movement, DPS Vasant Kunj organized a FIT INDIA Plogging Run for the

students, staff and Heads of Schools on 2nd October, 2019. This laudable and

unprecedented initiative of the Government of India is to promote the habit of fitness

and cleanliness in all its citizens. Early morning on the eventful day, around 200

students and 30 teachers, along with the Principal and the Vice Principal assembled in

the school’s big Football field for the same. The Principal along with the students and

staff, took the pledge to become eco-warriors and make earnest efforts to keep the

surroundings clean and make the school, country and the world a plastic-free zone. The

students, teachers and staff of the school then jogged and walked the 2 km distance

around the Bio Diversity Park near the school and collected the Single Use Plastic

Waste from around the dedicated path. The teachers also took the brooms in their

hands and swept the grounds of the school displaying their will to implement Mahatma

Gandhiji’s principle of cleanliness.

Say No to Single Use Plastic

Zero Tolerance to Single Use Plastic An engaging assembly was organised by the

students of DPS Vasant Kunj on the balmy morning of 1st October, 2019. The assembly

was attended by the officials from the South Delhi Municipal Corporation. The assembly

was part of the school’s 150th Birth Anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhiji. The

theme of the assembly was ‘Zero Tolerance to Single Use Plastic’ and making South

Delhi a ‘Plastic Free Zone’. Emphasising this path breaking initiative of the Government

of India, the students presented a thought-provoking skit. The skit stressed on the

complete ban on the use of single-use plastic products from our lives. The young,

enthusiastic students shared powerful views and news reinforcing the urgent need to

preserve our Mother Earth and make it completely plastic free. After the compelling

assembly by the students, the MCD officials took centre stage and educated the young

minds about the menace of plastic and the health hazards it is posing to the world at

large. They later took an ‘Anti Plastic Pledge’ urging the student to vow to be eco-

warriors discarding the rampant use of PET bottles, plastic cups, straws and other

thermocol items.

Water Conservation Campaign A workshop was organised on 24th July, 2019 by Swechha, Nehul , Ashim, Vrinda,

Deepti and Meagan in which they conducted the session with class 6 on Water

Conservation.

They began with an energiser, following with an activity "Water Dumb Charades" to

make them realise that water is required for all human activities, directly or indirectly,

and that is why it is extremely essential to us.

Then a discussion on distribution, accessibility and sources of water across the globe

was held. Why water is polluted and not equally accessible was explained by

introducing Water Mismanagement, on an individual and society level.

Lastly, students were made to think how they waste water, and have promised us that

they will take their own first step for saving water.

A class assembly was conducted by 6 –E on 20 th August 2019.The assembly was

attended by all students of class 6,the assembly started with the thought of the day

followed by a poem recited by students and a skit was also performed by the

students.T he students made posters wrist bands and banners to generate awareness

on the issue.

TEENS4TEENS Teens4teens is a mental health organisation started by teenagers for their peers.

It works to remove the stigma surrounding mental health and ensures that no one feels

like they have no to talk to.

The volunteers of this organisation conducted a workshop for the same on 9th July

2019, for the students of class XI.

They gave information about various mental health related conditions like depression

and anxiety and how to deal with them. Interactive activities were also conducted.

World wild life day

Celebrated on 3rd March, World Wild Life Day was created to create awareness about

the different types of flora and fauna, along with the various ways to preserve them.

Awareness can be generated in the form of assemblies, posters, street plays etc. This

year, posters were made and distributed to educate people on the above listed topic.

Eco - Friendly Holi

Holi is a festival of colours but using pichkaris and water balloons creates unnecessary garbage and wastes a lot of water hence polluting the environment. Bhavini of class X made a video requesting all to celebrate a dry Holi to avoid damage and unwanted consequences to our precious environment. Natural colours or flowers can be used instead.

International Day of Action for Rivers

The International Day of Action for Rivers is a day dedicated to solidarity – when diverse

communities around the world come together with one voice to say that our rivers

matter. For last 22 years, 14th March is celebrated globally as International Day of

Action for Rivers. This year’s Day of Action for Rivers theme focuses on Women, Water,

and Climate Change and is in celebration of the role of women in protecting and

managing rivers. Vatsal Sharma of class XII made a video highlighting the importance

of rivers in our life and urging people to join hands and pledge to celebrate our

freshwater ecosystems and campaign for their conservation.

Achievements 2019-20

Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA)

Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) Council, in collaboration with

TERI, conducted the ‘Paryavaran Rakshak’ contest to evaluate the environmental

performance of schools across India. DPS Vasant Kunj excelled at this audit to bag the

prestigious Paryavaran Rakshak award which was received by Ms. Adita Saxena,

TGT French on 6th May 2019 during a programme held at India Habitat Centre

celebrated as a follow up to the Earth Day 2019.

District Interact Recognition & Awards Rishit Jain and Ishaan C. Saxena of Class XII

won the Platinum Interact Video award for incredible service during the year 2018-2019

at District Interact Recognition & Awards on 3rd July 2019 held at Sanskriti School.

Wild Wisdom Quiz State Level Finals

The wild wisdom city final was organised at the Sriram school, Aravalli on 4 th October

2019.110 schools of Delhi participated in the event.

Chaitanya of 7 A and Ishaan of 7 E represented the school for the same they cleared

the first round but did not qualify in the top 5 schools of Delhi.

Tagore international school East of Kailash stood first in the final.

The Green Olympiad exam was organised on 16th October, 2019. 75 students

participated in the exam from classes 4th-7th. 16 students scored above 60 marks for the

same and Ankit Raj of class 4th, Alisha of class 5th and Anjika Shankar class 7th were

the top scorers in the Olympiad.

Saviours Foundation conducted the Olympiad on 7th November, 2019 in which 11

students from classes 6th – 11th participated.

Globe Science Olympiad, conducted by Indian Environmental society, was held on

22nd November, 2019. 31 students participated in it. Shubhojit of class 6th got a

consolation prize in National ranking from Indian Environmental organization.

One Earth Social Initiative

15 students of classes 5-8 participated in the "Dream Green" online painting in

November 2019.The sole purpose of this competition was to initiate a curiosity and raise

awareness on climate change as our Earth is literally and figuratively burning. Over 200

entries were received from all over the country and entries of 3 students were

shortlisted from our school. They are Navya and Tavishi of class 6th and Devika of

class 5.

EDU HEAL OLYMPIADS

74 students of classes 6th -11th participated in the Edu Heal Science Olympiad

held on 18th December at DPS Vasant Kunj

The school bagged 6 gold medals 1 silver medal and 2 bronze medals

World Wet Land Day

The environment council celebrated the world wet land day held on 2nd Feb, 2020

every year. Hrisha Dhairya and Kritin of classes 7th conducted the speech. The

students of classes IV and V were also sensitised about the same and a quiz was

organised for students by Ms. Adita Saxena.

Clean Yamuna Workshop was organised on 19th February, 2020 at Thyagaraja

stadium by the state education board in collaboration with Delhi Jal Board, CPCB and

Ministry of Environment where in Dr Shashi Bala, Director CBSE ,Ms Nigam, Senior

Scientific officer, Dept of Environment, Delhi, Ajay Gupta, Chief officer, Delhi Jal board

were the distinguished Guests for the occasion.The panel discussed the steps taken by

Delhi Government, Delhi Jal board and Ministry of Environment for the conservation of

the river but urged the need for teachers to play a pivotal role as they could sensitise

the students and spread the message to a wider audience . They also spoke on how

important it was to conserve the river which is the lifeline for many. The workshop

ended with the launch of an year long action plan entailing the activities that need to

be conducted by schools in 2020.

Ms Adita Saxena represented the school for the same.
