Inside Washington 2012 is oneo the best ways or studentsto witness the impact o thepolitical process on public policy

and to ollow the campaignso the 2012 presidential andcongressional races. Tis seminaralso examines the critical rolethat the media play in presentingand shaping the opinions andviews o potential presidentialcandidates and the politics beingenacted by Congress.

Te rst week, In Pursuit othe Presidency, is led by scholarand political commentator

Ross Baker, Ph.D. o RutgersUniversity. It examines thestrategies, tactics and prospects

o those pursuing the presidencyin 2012. It scrutinizes theinuential roles that Congress,national and state parties,lobbyists, pollsters, consultantsand interest groups play inthe campaign. Students wil linteract with various campaignstrategists, party ocials andveterans o past campaigns whowill analyze the nations mostgrueling and high stakes race.

Te second week, Politics andthe Media, is led by award-winning journalist Steve

Bell o Ball State University.It examines candidates,policymakers and campaignconsultants within the contexto media coverage. Some oAmericas most respectedpolitical journalists, newsanalysts, and media consultantswill help students analyze theintricate relationship betweenthe media and the electoralprocess.

Each convention seminar is asel-contained two-week programbeginning a week prior to theactual conventions. Te seminaris a combination o ormalinstruction, guest lectures,panels, tours, site visits and

eldwork assignments to give youthe opportunity to experiencethe convention rom a multitudeo perspectives.

coverage.During the convention week,we review the exciting eventso the previous days and dicussthe highly anticipated eventsas the convention continues.Tis week ocuses on thekeynote address, party platorm,selection o the nomineescampaign issues and strategiesand other important politicaltopics. During both weeksstudents meet daily with their

aculty leader, who providesguidance or their small group

meetings and is responsibleor overseeing eld work andevaluating student perormance.

Months prior to arrival,students complete a eldworkplacement orm. Tis guides usin placing them in volunteeractivities related to theirprimary interests (partyorganizations, the media,interest groups, etc.). Weseek to assign students toindividuals or organizationsthat have the appropriatecredentials or admission toconvention sessions and otherevents. Te purpose o theeldwork assignment is to giveparticipants the opportunityto be at the right place at the

right time and contribute tosome part o the operation o

the event. Students establishtheir individual learning goalsthrough listening, negotiating,sharing inormation, decision-making, and problem solving.Depending upon the natureand availability o placements,

students may be given onelonger eldwork placement ora number o dierent shorterassignments.

Be a witness to an important moment in American history!

Tis ten-day academic seminar in our nations capital ocuses

on the presidential inauguration and the newly-elected or

re-elected administration.

Students gain exposure to

the critical issues and eventsthat surround the transeror continuation o power.Issues such as the presidentialtransition and politicalappointments, congressionalconrmations, relationships

with the media, congressionalrelations, and agenda-setting orboth national and oreign policyare covered.

Speakers, site visits, tours andbriengs and special events

will take place between Sunday

and Friday. Students will

have Saturday, Sunday andMonday (Martin Luther KingJr. Day) available to attendany public inauguration andcommemorative events. TeInauguration is on Monday,January 21, with check-out by

noon on uesday, January 22.

For the National PoliticalConvention Seminars:

Undergraduate and graduatestudents with a GPA o 2.5 orhigher at their home institutionare eligible to apply. Students

with less than a 2.5 GPAwho are in good standing(no probation) may apply,but must submit a letter orecommendation rom a acultymember. All undergraduatestudents must have aWashington Center liaisonor campus or aculty sponsor

approve their application.Recent graduates (within 18months o receiving a collegedegree) are also welcome toattend any o the seminarsin the Campaign 2012Academic Seminar Series.Tey must submit one letter orecommendation.

Te Campaign 2012 Seriesis designed to give students acomprehensive course o studydirected towards understanding
