Teacher Biographies

Gail Hutchison—Wilton, WV Weaving is a big part of my life and has been for over 30 years. Designing and teaching are two of my favorite things to do. I’ve written over 100 patterns and taught most of them. I have met some life long friends along the way and look forward to weaving and sharing with new friends. When I’m not creating baskets or on the road teaching, I love playing with paper and beads, doodling and watching my grandchildren grow.

Karen Kotecki—Dousman, WI For 20 years and counting, weaving has been my passion. All materials, all shapes, sizes and designs intrigue me. Paying it forward by teaching is a privilege. I thank you all.

Billy Owens—Jenkins, MO Billy Owens is the second generation of the ‘Owens’ White Oak basket makers. His dad, Dale Owens, was self-taught and the first basket maker in the family. His wife, Theresa, helps with the weaving, as well as the children and grandchildren (the third and fourth generations). ‘Owens Oak Baskets’, has been around for over 30 years in the Ozarks of Southwestern Missouri. All the material used in their baskets is made from White Oak timber grown herein the Ozarks, which Billy selects, cuts and prepares by hand using a homemade hand tool, which was made by his Dad, called a ‘split knife’. Billy has taught at conventions and workshops all over the United States. In his classes he enjoys sharing with his students everything about the ‘White Oak’, from selecting the right tree to how he prepares the material for weaving. It is his goal when he teaches, that first and foremost, everyone leaves with a finished basket that they can be proud of and have had a fun time learning about the process of White Oak basket making.

Linda Shertz Allen—Rome, NY

My passion for basketry started 29 years ago. My interest quickly expanded to designing, teaching, occasional exhibitions, and juried shows. I enjoy working with a variety of materials including reed, bark that I harvest, waxed linen, beads, and various materials. Mostly self-taught, I love to create with color, design, and combine materials like I do with my miniatures. Teaching in many states, I enjoy sharing my basketry knowledge and experiences with my students. It’s rewarding to see their progress and excitement with what they have learned and made.

Kathy Taylor—Hohenwald, TN In 1999, I was a widow working at Dartmouth College, an Ivy League school in Hanover, NH when I met Nathan Taylor. Our “first date” was a trip to his basket shop in Sanbornton, NH to make a basket. My first basket! Over time our friendship grew. We married and both sold our homes and opened a new basket shop in Warner, NH. Over the next 12 years I built my skills as an ash splint basket maker. Eventually we followed the warm weather to Tennessee and have a shop in Hohenwald.
