A note from Zem

It was great to see so many of you at the Absolutely

Incredible Kid scholarship luncheon on May 10. We hope

you were inspired by the stories from real Camp Fire kids

and alumni who have benefited from our programs. Our

work would not be possible without the support provided

by donors like you, who realize the importance of Camp

Fire’s child and youth development programs. Thank

you for all you do.

A Q&A with michelle purvis

how did you first get involved with camp Fire?I was a Bluebird and a Camp Fire Girl. In fact, I was just cleaning out a storage room and found my vest with all the beads on it. My daughter was in Camp Fire, and I helped with her club. My sister, Melissa Kirtley, has been on the board.

What camp Fire programs are you most interested in?I am a big fan of the Diamond Hill Station After School Program. I’ve chaired the Eddleman-McFarland Day Nursery Fund for the past six years. We’ve had the opportunity to support Diamond Hill Station, including purchasing computers and replacing carpet, among other projects. I’ve been impressed by the quality of the program.

how do you think this project impacts the community? It’s a safe, nurturing place for children to go after school. I think it is comforting to both parents, as well as the community as a whole, to have this type of program. With so many single-parent homes, and parents working multiple jobs, the homework assistance the children receive allows them to have more quality family time.

Are you interested in learning more about how you can support Diamond Hill Station? Contact Lyn Lucas, Vice President of Group Services, to arrange a site visit.

Who’s Supporting camp Fire?

Through a class titled “Service Learning in the Latino Community,” students studying Spanish at Texas Christian University have had the opportunity to use their language skills while assisting children with their homework at the DeZavala Elementary After School

program. The course, taught by Dr. Mary McKinney, was developed to provide real life situations for students to speak Spanish.

“I’ve really enjoyed helping the kids with their homework,” said Ruth Lopez. “I’ve realized that I’m good at communicating with children.” “The kids love it,” said Liliana Avina, Camp Fire Program Specialist. “They ask about college and talk about what they want to be when they grow up.”

Students provide tutoring to After School Students

Through a partnership with LSG Sky Chefs, Camp Fire provided cooking-based training titled “Eat Smart from the Start” at no charge to area child care providers. “We couldn’t have done this training without the support of Doug Reid, Director of Customer Services, and Bob Blackburn, Vice President of Sales for LSG Sky Chefs,” said Lindsay Hopper, who coordinated the project for Camp Fire’s Work/Family Division.

Camp Fire offered the free training to child care providers to help them create a healthy food environment for the kids in their care. Participants learned how to prepare nutritious meals for children, as well as received tips on buying healthy, low-cost foods. The project was made possible through a grant from Share Our Strength.

Each summer, Camp Fire partners with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth to send kids, like Medora (left) and Lyric, to camp. Medora’s favorite activities were horseback riding and archery, while Lyric loved swimming and outdoor cooking. “The best thing was that it was the first time I ever got to pick my own schedule,” said Lyric.

To support this partnership, the First Texas Council has raised funds to provide camperships for 70 boys and girls to attend 2011 summer resident camp at El Tesoro. “So many of the children in our programs are city kids and would never have the opportunity to experience the outdoors, if it weren’t for Camp Fire,” said Jim Larkin, COO, Boys & Girls Clubs. “Not only do the kids get to participate in traditional activities, like canoeing and hiking, they’ll also learn new skills and make new friends.”

Grief is an emotion we wish could be reserved only for adults. But for children who are bereaved, El Tesoro de la Vida is a special place where they express their feelings and learn new ways to cope with grief.

Camp Fire USA is now accepting applications for El Tesoro de la Vida Grief Camp on July 31-August 6. El Tesoro de la Vida, which means “Treasure of Life” in Spanish, is a week-long overnight grief camp for children, ages 6- 16, who have experienced the death of a loved one.
