Gagne :
As a result of available contract hboratory progr• slot openings for the -ks of 27 November and 3 Dee-r 1984, the first Mjor s"""'11ng run of the project has been scheduled for that period. Although the ttmefra• ts extremely ttght for the preparation of a project operations plan, tt 1s crtttcal that s111pl1ng be conducted during that period to avoid long delays tn the tnvesttgatton.
Attached plene ftnd our requested Work Asstgrrnent Allendlftent to CQIIIPlete an tntttal comprehensive saq>l1ng of groundwater, surface water, sediMent and soils. We plan to obtain 57 ons1te groundwater sai!IPles, 10 residential well sa~les, 11 surface water and sediment saq, les, and 10 soils sallll)les which is out11ned in detailed in the Project Operations Plan (PDP). This adds up to 99 sa~les which 1s a substantial nl.lllber. However, a review of the available data showed that very few wells could be justifiably eliminated, so all ons1te wells should be saq,led in thts run . This request is being submitted at this time for the following reasons:
o Weather conditions are deteriorating with the approach of winter and the field work is best accQn'4111shed prior to frost penetration .

o The required slots are available tn the contract laboratory program (CLP) which ""'t be utilized at this time or be lost .
o There ts a need to provide a complete, comprehensive, up-to-date saJI'4)1ing and analysts at the stte and the surrounding area in order to cOOIJ)lete the Project Work Plan. Open quest tons concern extent of groundwater contamination and transport charactertsttcs, PCB contamtnatton and threats to potable water supplfes .
Following the analyses , it w111 be possible to select a IIlith smaller nun~ber of wells for perfodfc monttortng during the 11fe of the project . In addttton, durtng this run , all wells will be capped tnd locked so that future sa""ltng will be defensible.
