para entender la importancia del
desarrollo minero, solo hace falta
mirar a nuestro alrededor y darnos
cuenta de que la gran mayoría de
cosas que nos rodean en nuestra
vida tienen contenidos minerales;
llegar a ello implica una ardua tarea
de revisión cartográfica, prospección
y exploración sistemática para la
generación geológica de áreas
potenciales, que requieren el esfuerzo
financiero y humano y el decidido
compromiso de desarrollar una
industria minera responsable con el
medio ambiente y la sociedad.
Asumir el reto de expandirnos a
nuevas fronteras nos trajo a caminar
por Colombia; nuestras rutas
empiezan donde acaban las carreteras,
la infraestructura, lo accesible;
(Argentina, Australia, Brasil, ghana,
guinea, Mali, namibia, suráfrica,
tanzania y los estados unidos) y,
por otra, extensivas actividades de
exploración detallada en metales
básicos.
estos años de trabajo en Colombia
nos han permitido comprobar la
belleza de una nación de enormes
riquezas geográficas, culturales
y sociales. Caminar más de ocho
millones de hectáreas de la geografía
nacional en trabajos de exploración ha
sido una experiencia sorprendente y
de inmenso gozo.
para nosotros, caminar por Colombia
ha sido una invitación a la
conjugación de los sentidos, a la
admiración de sus paisajes y al
conocimiento de su amplia variedad
cultural, lo cual ha implicado
reconocer el entorno y respetarlo.
es imposible no sentirse maravillado
ante los verdes cañaduzales, los
vistosos cultivos de café, la arracacha
y el fríjol, las montañas con nieves
perpetuas, los ríos caudalosos y las
selvas eternas. igual fascinación
sobreviene al estrechar vínculos
con indígenas, afrodescendientes,
mestizos, andinos y caribes.
Antonio Machado, destacado
poeta sevillano perteneciente a la
generación del 98, afirmó en una de
sus obras que “caminante, no hay
camino, se hace camino al andar”.
Con la fuerza de este argumento,
Anglogold Ashanti ha labrado su
camino en Colombia. Hoy queremos
compartir con ustedes, a través de
las siguientes páginas, tan magnífica
experiencia.

necessary to look at the atmosphere,
and realize that the majority of
things that surround our lives
contain minerals within; to come
to these development findings, it
is mandatory to run a conspicuous
study in cartography, prospecting,
and systematic exploration for the
potential geological areas, which
require the financial, human, and
the dedicated commitment efforts
to focus on the growth of a mining
industry that is entirely responsible
with the environment and society.
to face the challenge of expansion
to new frontiers, brought us to the
exercise of walking through Colombia;
our routes begin where the roads
fade, the infrastructure, the reachable
for exploring the forgotten corners of
this country, not only for the sake of
finding gold, but also unimaginable
riches; paradise hidden away in the
warmth of the people, in the smile of
the children, in the mountains, and in
the skies.
to be a gold mining company, with
operations and exploitation programs
in various countries, has granted us
with dignifying acknowledgement;
furthermore, it has granted us with the
opportunity to explore the world from
the point of view of our people.
since 1944, Anglogold Ashanti,
with its headquarters located in
Johannesburg, in south Africa, has
come to be known worldwide, for
it holds an ample portfolio of gold-
bearing bodies in gold mining regions.
there are twenty-one on going
operations; on one hand, open sky
mines as well as underground ones,
and metal exploitation plants located
in ten different countries (Argentina,
Australia, Brazil, ghana, guinea, Mali,
namibia, south Africa, tanzania, and
the united states); on the other hand,
there are intense exploration activities
in the usage of basic metal.
in order to fully comprehend the
mining evolution, it is merely
the years spent in Colombia have
brought along the confirmation of
the beauty of a nation with enormous
geographic, cultural, and social
riches. to walk over eight million
hectares of national geography,
during exploration tasks, has been
an amazing experience which comes
with immense joy.
For us, to walk through Colombia
has been an invitation to the merging
of the senses, to the conjugation
of its landscapes, and to the
acknowledgement of its wide cultural
variety, which has an implication
to acknowledge the environment
and show respect towards it. it is
impossible not to feel enveloped by
the wonders of the greenest sugar
fields, the colorful coffee plantations,
the arracacha roots, the beanstalks,
the ever so white peaks of the
mountains, the furious rivers, and
the everlasting jungles. in the very
same way, there is a fascination that
comes with the close bonds slowly
established with the indigenous
communities, the afro-descendants,
the Andeans, the Caribbeans.
Antonio Machado, outstanding poet
from sevilla, who belonged to the
generation of 98’, assured in one of
his productions: “here is no such
thing as a road, one makes the road
as one walks on.” With the same
strength contained in these words,
Anglogold Ashanti has made its road
in Colombia. today, we wish to share
with you, through the coming pages,
such wonderful experience.

es decir, confiando en la capacidad
humana y profesional de nuestra
gente, lo que, sumado a la experiencia
mundial de la empresa, logró en sólo
cinco años encontrar depósitos de
talla mundial, como el de la Colosa.
el éxito alcanzado en este quinquenio
lo queremos celebrar con esta
publicación, dando testimonio de
una minería moderna, producto del
equilibrio con la sociedad y el medio
ambiente.
el libro, Caminando por Colombia,
una visión rural de Anglogold Ashanti,
se concibió fundamentalmente
como un reconocimiento al grupo de
trabajo que, superando todo tipo de
obstáculos, logró posicionar dentro
y fuera de la compañía un nuevo
concepto de hacer exploración,
entendiendo la historia del país
y siendo conscientes de que el
conflicto social colombiano sólo
podrá superarse con el compromiso
de todos. Aquí, juegan un papel
muy importante las políticas de
“Con el puño cerrado no se puede
intercambiar un apretón de manos”.
indira gandhi
Aunque Anglogold Ashanti empezó
a tener interés en el potencial
aurífero de Colombia desde
1999, fue solamente hasta el año
2003 que se tomó la decisión de
iniciar una exploración geológica
sistemática que pudiese verificar
la existencia de yacimientos de
oro de interés económico. esta
exploración sistemática tenía un
gran reto adicional que había sido
el condicionante más importante
para que empresas colombianas
o extranjeras comprobaran
nuestra sangre.
Los invitamos a disfrutar cada una de
las fotografías pensando en un mejor
mañana, como lo hicimos nosotros en
la concepción de esta obra.

We wish to memorialize the success

of time with the publication of this
book, evidence of modern mining, and
proof of a product made with poise
between important issues to us like
society and the environment.
the book, Walking through Colombia,
along with Anglogold Ashanti,
was conceived primarily as an
acknowledgement to the work teams,
that beyond any obstacles, have
made it possible for a positioning
of the company, both inside and
outside of the country, bestowing a
new concept of mining exploration;
thus, understanding the history of this

of the social conflicts unreservedly

a hand.” indira gandhi
even when Anglogold Ashanti began
to bestow a close interest in the gold
project potential in Colombia since
1999, it was only until the year 2003
that the approach to a systematic
geological exploration phase was
contemplated, which could verify the
presence of gold sites of considerable
economic interest to our company.
this systematic exploration had an
interesting surplus: companies both
international and local, as well as
conquerors from the time of the
colony, have sought to find the legend
treasure of el dorado, or sites close
to it, believed to be buried in the
grounds of Colombia. this plus was
the social situation of our nation. this
challenge was confronted with an
exploration design project connected
to our needs, in fact, based on human
and professional resources of our
own people; additionally, there is
the wide-ranging experience of the
contained in the national realm,
bearable only to those fully committed
to the country, where it is the social
responsibility that provides solid
politics of industries around the
country.
the images revealing diverse settings
of the national landscape, contained
in the pages of this book, are the
product of a thrilling experience and
indisputable impressions imprinted
in the eyes and soul of our travelers
of the exploration projects during the
journey through Colombian territories.
the magical color of mountains,
valleys, rivers, and tropical forests are
printed in these photos; and in which,
at any given moment, a character
from a legend might just make
presence, characters like the Mohan
or the pata sola, the Anima sola or
the ghosts born within the collective
imaginaries, outcome from the mixture
of indigenous, spanish, and black
cultures carried in our bloodstream.
We invite you to enjoy these
photographs thinking of a better
tomorrow, just as we did when we
conceived this same piece of art.

Colombia ocupa una posición
privilegiada, desde el punto de
vista geotectónico y metalogénico,

Colombia occupies a privileged
position from the geotectonic and

diverse geological environments,
which allows the existence of
innumerable minerals and fossil

this Latin American country, located
at the northwestern side of south
America, with a territorial extension
of over one million square kilometers,
and with a population close to
forty-five million, has become the
protagonist of many important
happenings, which have defined its
people, its culture, and its towns in a
very unique way.
towns enhanced by their cultural
diversity can be found everywhere;
amongst these, the people from the
Cundinamarca and Boyacá, and
the cachacos, of course, from the
interior of the country. A wide variety
of cultures for a diverse, beautiful
country.

these towns engrave in each one of
the regions; each in a different way in
every town.
Walking through Colombia is an
ambitious intent of Anglogold

depths of the mining exploration, to
a wonderful Colombia, its people,
its culture, its landscapes, its roads;
to all efforts of each inhabitant –the
geologists, technicians, operators,
auxiliaries, administrative staff,
communities- and, in general, to all
those who have made it possible for
this to be a successful, responsible,
and transparent operation.
page by page, we journeyed through
a fascinating wealth of our country:
social, environmental, and cultural
riches, to which we have been a
witness to. the colorful photographs
contained within this production
bring to life the most varied textures,
scents, flavors. the strong hearted
people share with us the experience
learnt, the beauty of the sight framed
by tremendously breathtaking flora
and fauna, desired by many, wanted
by many, and they tell us of stories
that keep to the roads of hidden
places.
i do hope that when walking the roads
through these five chapters of our
beloved Colombia, you may have,
in the end, the same sensation that
i have: Colombia is, indisputably, a
country to be conquered.

emprendedores.
para caminar por Colombia se
necesita tener una buena vista, un
tacto sensible, un oído agudo y
un olfato y un gusto amplios, para
captar los paisajes, las sensaciones,
los sonidos y los olores y sabores
magníficos de una geografía de más
de un millón de kilómetros cuadrados,
que incluye costas en dos océanos,
montañas con nieves perpetuas, ríos
caudalosos, selvas eternas, valles
generosos, ciénagas, recursos a flor
pelajes…
para caminar por Colombia se necesita
tener sensibilidad, para descubrir la
variedad de culturas andina, llanera,
indígena, afrodescendiente, mestiza,
jericó, antioquia.

por ejemplo, el amanecer en
Aracataca hace parte de una masa de
plastilina azul, roja y amarilla esparcida

corregimientos encumbrados y
veredas ignotas. el paisaje nos
acogió primero y nos absorbió e
hizo suyos después. nosotros no lo
conquistamos: él nos conquistó.
nuestro negocio es
el oro, sin olvidar que
generamos valor, a
través de prácticas
responsables y seguras

![Page 26: Caminandopor colombia](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081506/557e23d6d8b42ae1408b4e85/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)

brillante.
gachalá, cundinamarca.quinchía, risaralda. cajamarca, tolima.
![Page 28: Caminandopor colombia](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081506/557e23d6d8b42ae1408b4e85/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
pero volvamos al trabajo de los
productores de panela, en un
trapiche artesanal, movido por un
caballo, como lo encontramos en
risaralda. Mientras este caminaba
en círculos, guiado por los silbidos
coquetos de un campesino, un
sistema de poleas trituraba la caña
hasta convertirla en pulpa. Quienes

emberá Chamí, en risaralda y Chocó;
el Cuna, en Chocó; el Muisca, en
Cundinamarca y Boyacá; el pijao, en el
tolima... Aunque algunos han dejado
de practicar sus ritos tradicionales
para acercarse a la “civilización”, otros
conservan sus prendas, sus danzas,
su música, su lengua, su cultura,
basada en una cosmogonía que aún
no comprendemos.
Las diferentes comunidades que viven
en los departamentos son una de las
principales riquezas que Anglogold
Ashanti ha encontrado Caminando
por Colombia. por esto, la protección
de su entorno y de sus costumbres
es la principal preocupación de la
empresa, para que los grupos étnicos
y las comunidades rurales y urbanas
conserven no solo su ambiente
natural, sino aquello que se halla en
el trasfondo cultural que corre por sus
venas. el desarrollo de las regiones
donde hace presencia es el principal
motor de su trabajo.
arquitectura e idiosincrasia
Allí no solamente
existen muchos talleres dedicados

encontrar tantos sabores, olores,
visiones y sensaciones que harán

dismissing the daily rush of the city
and embarked a journey into routes
that took us north of the country, and
south too, from east to west, through
dirt roads and rivers; we stopped
at places as varied as numerous,
municipalities of all sorts, prominent
settlements, and forgotten locations.
it was the landscape that took us in
at first, and truthfully, it captivated
us in such a way that we were left
helplessly enthralled. We never got a
chance to conquer it:
it conquered us!
For instance, dawn at Aracataca is
nothing but a great mass of blue, red,
and yellow plasticine spread about
the varnished skies, so the river can
purposely reflect itself on the river that
inherited its name; the waters of this
river sing when they strike the rocks.
to open to the sensations of the
town, that brought us gabriel garcía
Márquez, allows us to understand
the magnitude of the inspiration
that brought him to producing the
masterpiece that made him winner
of the nobel prize in Literature. the
magic realm can be perceived in
the century old train station, as if a
machine from the past were coming
to town, adorned by millions of yellow
butterflies that surround it. you can
feel and smell the mid day hour on
a hammock hung under a mango
tree or a plantain tree, for Aracataca
is located in the middle of banana
plantations, in the Caribbean, at the
Magdalena department.
We did not only observe enormous
cloud streams at dawn, but we
traveled through the main body
of water of Colombia: the friendly
Magdalena river, 1,540 kilometers
of longitude; the Magdalena is also
known by indigenous groups as
yuma, which means, precisely that:
friend. other than being the main
streamline that runs through the
country from the north to the south,
it is a symbol and representation of
the vast variety of regions that starts

to be surprised is a permanent task.
this country is simply full of diverse
and rich vegetation, of riches and of
flavors, that indeed produces cultures,
that remains since remote times, the
indigenous communities and later on
the europeans and the Africans have
transmitted with their own voices
stories, myths, and legends that
allow us to acknowledge ourselves as
multicultural heredity.

at el páramo de las papas, and goes
all the way to Bocas de Ceniza at
Barranquilla.
As we sailed through the Magdalena
river, the cloudless night took us
by surprise with its millions of stars
spread about in the skies. We were
traveling from the beautiful city of
Mompós, famous for its preserved
architectural housing from the times
of the colony, head toward the
municipality of el Banco, the historical
port where José Barros was born;
he was the man who composed
La piragua, one of many typical
cumbiaque songs, which bears the
very basic condiment and seasoning
so known to the flavors of the coast.
Barrios was told by his grandfather
that a long time back, a boat used to
sail, and that it parted from el Banco,
old port, headed for the Beaches of
Love at Chimichagua. it was the boat
that belonged to guillermo Cubillos, it
was the boat, it was the boat… as the
famous song repeats in its chorus.
to the beat of La piragua, but on
board of a motorboat, we soon arrived
at the “Beaches of Love” at the moor
of Zapatosa, its real name, located at
the municipality of Chimichagua, in
the department of Cesar.
While walking through Colombia,
we were reassured of the fact that
in fact, there are endless agricultural
fields and landscapes. the department
of tolima, more specifically the
municipality of Cajamarca, we can
find lofts of stored beans, arracacha
roots, and coffee. the smell was
quite tempting every step of the
way. the countryside adorned with
a wide variety of colors, which are
segmented in the mountains of La
guala and La Colosa, where the most
important projects for Anglogold
Ashanti are concentrated in Colombia.
these hills, share layers of colors
that come in shades according to
the season that the plantation goes
through: the plantation of beans,
for instance, after the harvest has
been completed by the peasants of
the farm, a dark brown patch of soil
can be found where the green used
to lay; at the very side of the dark
patch, you can observe a plantation
of arracacha root with a yellowish
tint to it due to the flowers covering
its surface delicately; on the opposite
side, almost in total contrast, a green
pea plantation, which resembles
a dense green mat. A mosaic of
multicolored tonalities from which the
green is the outstanding one, among
so many shades, makes the task of
the most sophisticated of lenses close
to impossible to replicate. perhaps
the pen of a poet might be able to
duplicate such beauty, as did Álvaro
Mutis himself.
the same happens to the hundreds
of hectares of oil palm trees at
Fundación, located in Magdalena,
north of the country. oil palm trees
and African palms are close species,
the latter used by our ancestors to
make roofs for indigenous housing,
acevedo, huila. fundación, magdalena.
![Page 34: Caminandopor colombia](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081506/557e23d6d8b42ae1408b4e85/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
and nowadays to make biofuels that
guarantee the energetic development;
this creates an acute landscape
where a deep green prevails, which
is created by the lack of sunlight at
the interior of the thick weeds. the
exotic flowers from the cotton plants
at the plantations in the Huila, made
of hundreds of small white spots that
bloom over a dark shade of green, and
get trapped by the bare hands of the
peasants during the collection season,
who in turn, dress colorful attires
that protect them from thorns of the
stems.
in Colombia, each rural area is used
not only for farming of varied produce,
but also to feed the cattle in large
extensions or estates, like the ones
in Antioquia and Cesar or in smaller
estates, like the ones located at
Cundinamarca, Boyacá, and nariño.
the same occurs with sugarcane: in
santander de Quilichao, Cauca, and
Cisneros in Antioquia, we can find
entire plantations that sweeten the
environment and later, the foods of
the Colombian families. each plant,
of a light green color and aromatic
scent, grows 6.5 feet, approximately,
when ready to be harvested. inside
the fields of panela, byproduct of
sugarcane, the sweet honey like smell
wraps up the atmosphere, the draw
well grinds the long canes, and inside
the melting pots made of copper that
make the panela boil in effervescent
thick mixtures.
some of our natural wonders, like
rivers or mountains, on occasion
blend in with the infrastructure,
without disturbing the daily spectacle
of our rural Colombia; this is the case
of three huge manmade reservoirs.
We first visited La salvajina located in
the municipality of suárez, Cauca; its
population divided in twenty per cent
of indigenous habitants, eighty per
cent afrocolombians. its dark green
waters run over thirty-four kilometers
between mountains on each side.
the second of the reservoirs that
we visited, while walking through
Colombia, located at the municipality
of gachalá, Cundinamarca, considered
the hydroelectric capital of Colombia.
its height, over 603 feet, makes it the
deepest reservoir in Latin America.
However, in pro of not leaving all to
the numbers and stats, that which
truly captivates people is its emerald
green waters and the cramped
mountain tops that make it more a
river than what it truly is, as people
transit over the Miraflores Bridge. But
after surfacing, having being inside
the 984 feet underground tunnels,
there it was: majestic, serene, open
from side to side, immense, with
merely a few motorboats racing some
locals across. We then arrived at the
reservoir of Betania, located at the
department of Huila, which embraces
the municipalities of yaguará, Hobo,
and Campoalegre. under the heat,
we witnessed the merging of the
waters from the yaguará river into
the Magdalena, which symbolizes

the trade of the cultural riches of
Colombia.
Walking on water
to sail over the bodies of water of
Colombia almost resembles the
beauty found at the highest peak of
a mountain with its open blue skies.
once again, we come to awe and
travel back to the times when we
were children and allowed ourselves
to play with drops of water that resist
to gravity nor do we do it to take any
stone at random and throw it into the
water just so that we could listen to
the bouncing over each ripple once,
twice, three times…
Crackling sounds that can be heard
inside the coal mines, where, by no
means can be thought that a miner
finds it easy to earn his salary. Among
the many galleries that we visited,
we entered the gallery of silence,
located in the municipality of suárez,
in the Cauca. the hard hammer blows
were unstoppable; the “hallways”
or paths moist due to the drops that
permanently drop onto the mud
puddles; the “caparosa”, a yellowish
substance that covers the inner lining
of the rocks; the visibility from the dim
lights that come from the improvised
bulbs, lets us observe these hard
men at work, whose skins have been
blackened by the charcoal, and whose
eyes seem a bit inquisitive.
if the working conditions are harsh
inside a gold mine, they are just
as complicated inside a coal mine
due to the lack of oxygen, the high
concentration of toxic chemicals, and
the poor visibility. this is the case of
a coal mine at Quinchía, located in
risaralda, where, at a six hundred and
fifty-six feet underground, the miners
carry 100 pounds of charcoal sacs
tied around their heads and backs,
who make no complaints at all. When
they emerge from the depths of the
earth, pearls of sweat run through
their bodies and tainted black faces
because of their work.
But altogether, what makes these
landscapes beautiful is not appearing
before them after climbing a
mountain. What makes them truly
wonderful is the human beings
who live here and there. the great
agricultural fields and landscapes in
Cajamarca wouldn’t be beautiful if
every morning hundreds of peasants
did not get up to beat the beans with
a leather whip tied to a small stick,
collecting process known as “juetear”;
they wouldn’t be beautiful if coffee
was not skillfully collected in colorful
handmade baskets by peasants
who hide from the heat under their
hats made of straw at Quinchía,
located in risaralda; they wouldn’t
be important if the corn collectors,
with bare hands, tear the corn from
the plant or the potato from the roots,
in the municipalities of gachetá or
Junín, located at Cundinamarca;
the plantations of rice wouldn’t be
sumptuous if the peasants didn’t
scatter the hundreds of seeds, a
handful at a time over the recently
quinchía, risaralda. cajamarca, tolima.
![Page 36: Caminandopor colombia](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081506/557e23d6d8b42ae1408b4e85/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
plowed and humid ground in rivera,
Huila, which in time will become a
field of vivid green.
Back to the work of panela
production, a byproduct of
sugarcane, at the sugar mill tracked
by a horse, as found in risaralda.
While the horse galloped in circles,
guided by the mild whistles of the
peasant, the system of pulleys
grinds the canes until they become
pulp. those who touch the nectar
of the canes from head to toe smell
of the sweet scents that glide into
the municipalities of san roque,
Cisneros, and Fredonia, located at
Antioquia; suddenly, we are obliged
to stop and stare at an old man who
pours from a huge pot into another,
with an equally enormous wooden
spoon, a thick, clotted liquid, which
makes a panela when left to cool off.
Walking the word
the words of the people of the
regions, sometimes are worth much
more than the images captured,
precisely because words cannot
be photographed. We realized this
when talking to High school teacher
Celimo Augusto Hurtado, in La vega,
Cauca. He showed us that the people
from La vega have an amazing ability
when it comes to exaggerating
narrations and tales, not meaning
to lie, but meaning to make life
more pleasurable. this is known by
connoisseurs as oral literature. one
warm night, he mentioned, among
several other peculiar stories, that a
nineteen foot long rock was about to
roll down on a part of the town right
after a landslide, yet it was stopped
by a forgotten cabbage on the road.
everyone laughed and went to sleep.
the following day, when climbing the
santamaría Mountain, local pilgrimage
place for those who wish to visit
the virgin Mary, we passed the road
where the famous six foot long rock
was suspended in the abyss, held
lightly by something that looked very
much like cabbage roots. you see, i
told you so, i need not say any lies,
look for yourselves.
But there are other verbal expressions
that merge in with songs and dances
like at the settlement of La toma, in
the municipality of suárez, located
Cauca. A grandmother, a mother, and
a granddaughter dressed in yellow
traditional attires, color imported from
Afro-Colombian cultures, showed us
whom they sing to, and how they do
it, while a man and his small violin
guided the musical timing. And so,
a song began, the bass drum was
not there that day, but in the end
they still felt the deep pounding of
the instrument because the rhythm
is engraved in their blood to the beat
that has accompanied generation to
generation.
the variety of ethnic groups in
Colombia is ample: besides from
the Afro-Colombian, the indigenous
community is made up of eighty-four
different towns, like the Arahuacos,
junín, cundinamarca. cajamarca, tolima.

located at the sierra nevada de

indigenous communities at the Cauca;
the Wayúu indigenous groups located
at the Colombo-venezuelan guajira;
the embera indigenous groups located
at risaralda and Chocó; the Cunas at
Chocó; the Muiscas, at Cundinamarca
and Boyacá; the pijaos at the tolima…
even if some have stopped practicing
their traditional rituals to come closer
to civilization, others keep their
attires, their dances, their music,
their mother tongues, their culture
based on cosmography, that still
today, we cannot fully comprehend.
the different communities that live
in the departments are one of the
main riches that Anglogold Ashanti
has found walking through Colombia.
For this reason, protecting their
environment and their customs are a
priority to our company. our concern
is for these ethnic groups and the
rural communities preserve not only
their natural habitat, but that which is
found in the deepest essence of their
culture, and that runs through their
veins. the development of the local
regions where it is present constitutes
the main motivation for their work.
architecture and idiosyncrasy
even after walking through the
soft, humid soil, and having found
traditional housing built with clay,
palm tree rooftops tied together with
filaments and fences of bamboo
sticks, we also entered some towns
that were well worth visiting for their
unique architecture. the main plazas
of most of the municipalities behold
the local stories in their ancestral
houses, the wooden balconies,
singular windows, walls washed
over and over with lime-water
instead of paint, the halls of furtive
kisses, the temples for deliberation,
and indiscreet glances; the natural
drugstores filled with scent, the
benches set for passersby to sit and
chat about the situation of the country,
and how they can fix it. However,
step by step we came to a one of the
most beautiful towns of Colombia:
Jericó, located at Antioquia. there, we
did not only get to visit the very last
cathedral constructed in Colombia, its
seventeen chapels or the preservation
of the houses inherited form the
times of the colony, but also part of
the heredity that the paisas have left
behind.
in the plaza of this town, we found
men of advanced age that take a stroll
around the plaza every day dressed in
ponchos, short shirt, black trousers,
hat, cane, and without a doubt, their
carriel (small bag with twelve pockets
handcrafted with leather from cow
skin and varnish; these pieces are
sewn in pedal machines, which
needles is lubricated with pork fat, this
so that it may pierce the thick leather).
there are many workshops dedicated
to manufacturing carrieles at Jericó.
the most popular shop belongs
to daniel Agudelo, who has made
carrieles to appraised customers like
![Page 38: Caminandopor colombia](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022081506/557e23d6d8b42ae1408b4e85/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
the pope Juan pablo ii. Mr. Agudelo,
spends all day making these pieces
with due endurance, before his
sewing machine, which he has had
since he made his very first carriel,
over fifty years.
to walk through Colombia, you must
open your senses. All of them. in
order to penetrate the night, and to
be able to feel it in the skin, so that
you can hear the steps of mules being
pulled by their muleteers that climb
dirt roads transporting bamboo poles,
so that you can touch the wet leaves
of a frailejón tree inside the ridge of
soil between furrow and furrow or
the bark of the erect palm of wax
considered the national tree, and
that we were able to observe during
the journey through the surrounding
mountains of Cajamarca.
to walk through Colombia, the
face must be lifted, thus allowing
the sight to expand itself into the
horizon. you must allow your feet to
alternate the footpath over Antioquia
or risaralda, the sands of beaches of
the Caribbean, the dry ground of a
path in Huila, the fertile black earth at
Cundinamarca, the crackling stones
on the roads of the gold mines at
Bolívar, the millenary rocks of the
mountains at the Cauca. to allow our
steps to journey this country, the most
important issue is to carry with you,
a sac full of clothes, and yet a second
sac, this time empty and imaginary,
just to give place to all types of
experiences. one more condition:
there must be a possibility to unpack
that case of memories some day, and
find with joy so many flavors, scents,
sights, sensations that make you
vibrate all over again, in the skin.
We will continue to walk through
Colombia along with wonderful
Colombians, who shall allow
Anglogold Ashanti to continue
rediscovering corners, churches,
temples, roads and paths; rivers,
valleys, streams and peaks, so that
you can narrate new encounters and
anecdotes of our journeys through
this beautiful Colombian lands.

nuestros pasos
desde hace más de cinco mil años,
la humanidad valora un elemento
que se encuentra en todo el planeta:
el oro. desde 1999, cuando llegó a
Colombia, Anglogold Ashanti valora
actividad.
inicialmente hemos hecho el
reconocimiento de las áreas, con el
levantamiento de cartografía.
La segunda fase incluye el análisis
de las muestras de suelo y roca,
combinado con el estudio de las
características sociales de la región.
en la fase tres realizamos las
primeras perforaciones para
validar los conceptos geológicos
planteados. si estas perforaciones son
geológicamente exitosas, evaluamos
la concentración de metal en una
cantidad determinada de rocas, lo
que se conoce técnicamente como
“recursos inferidos”.
Continuarán las fases de
prefactibilidad, con estudios técnicos,
ambientales y sociales, seguidos
de la viabilidad de los escenarios, la
construcción de la infraestructura, la
explotación sostenible de las minas y
la rehabilitación de las zonas donde se
haya operado.

our steps
For over five thousand years, mankind
has given value to an element found
all around the planet: gold. since
1999, when Anglogold Ashanti arrived
in Colombia, it has given value to
an element found in the country: its
people.
With a philosophy that founds
itself on sustainable development,
the company works on the basis
of four social principles: the
rapprochement to local communities,
the acknowledgment of the people,
mutual respect, and community
life. these are the reasons for which
walking through Colombia has
been exceptionally easy even as the
exploitation of the gold mines was in
process.
in order to accomplish this, three
phases out of the total eight phases
that occur during exploitation, have
been met. initially, we have surveyed
the areas, by means of cartographic
studies.
the second phase includes the
analysis of soil and rock samples in
feasible clefts, thus combining these
with the studies of social conditions of
the regions involved.
Both the drilling and the evaluation
of concentration levels of metal, that
which is technically known as inferred
resources, constitute the third phase,
combined with the conformation of
the Committee for the development,
whose representatives are
representatives from the communities,
representatives from the government,
and representatives from Anglogold
Ashanti, in turn.
the subsequent phases: pre-feasibility
phase, along with technical studies,
environmental studies, and social
studies; the feasibility of the different
scenarios such as the construction
of the infrastructure, the sustainable
exploitation of the mines, and the
restoring of the zones that have already
been through the process of mining.

on the contrary, it flirts mirthfully
with the winds and the lights.

the walkinG word
in the department of the Cauca, south
of Colombia, the nasa natives speak
of the walking or moving words. in
the tolima, center zone of the country,
the charming Mohán emerges from
the turbulent waters of the Magdalena
river to kidnap beautiful young girls,
who wash their clothes by the banks
of the river. in Chía, a sacred town to
the Muiscas, the Mohán is a snake,
which glides over streams or rivers,
nonetheless, at the slightest contact
to salt, becomes a gold statue.
Myth and legend of the times prior
to the colony have spread about by
means of oral tradition and remain
nowadays, adapted to the cities and
the beliefs brought into the continent
by African gods, like yemayá or
goddesses from the Middle east that
ran through europe, and arrived in
vessels in the Caribbean waters of
guanahaní, later named san salvador.
deep inside the continent, the lands
were all renamed. over the temples
of the sun Xué and the godess Chía,
churches were erected; domes
characterize these constructions;
tourists admire these turrets as they
stand out, even so in the distance.
the old inhabitants of these lands
buried their dead with pots in which
they kept food that was meant to
be consumed during the transit
unto other lives. the statues of
apelike figures from san Agustín,
in the Huila or the subterranean
vaults or tierradentro, contrast the
contemporary graveyards, in which
angels with marble wings that point
towards the sky, stand vigilant.
the stories, real and fictitious, wander
slowly about the narrow paths and
the widest of avenues. some even
remain in the stubbornness of the
spoken word, while others have
merged into the voice of the ink
upon white sheets of paper for the
Marchioness of yolombó, of tomás
de Carrasquilla, the poems of valencia
or the characters of garcía Márquez,
that speak to us with varied accents to
reveal whimsical love stories.

Al caminar por Colombia, al primero
de los sentidos que hay que permitirle
aflorar es al tacto. para tener la
posibilidad de sentir en la piel el
contacto de la tierra seca o húmeda;

While walking through Colombia,
the first of the senses that should
be allowed to surface is the sense of
touch. to be able to feel in the skin the
contact with the dry or humid dirt; of
the rocks; the sands of the shores close
to the oceans, the lakes or rivers; the
floor of the galleries inside the mines;
of the stone made streets of remote
towns or in the cities that remain in
the heritage of the colonial times; of
the paved roads; of the asphalt of the
sidewalks along the cities.
Anywhere from huts, which
preserve the formulas of indigenous
communities to elevate walls made
of bareque or pressed clay, to
modern skyscrapers, passing through
temples raised in the most varied of
arquitectural styles; this country has
risen since distant times.

stone made paths, bridges that bring
together mountainsides or defy the
powerful rivers, tunnels that pierce the
mountains, layers of asphalt that draw
towns together, roads that preserve
the freshness of the soil, thus allowing
obstinate vegetation to remind us of
ecological balance; stairs that lead to
the interior of temples; steep boulder
made trails … all paths that welcome
the walkers of Colombia.

Amongst the high

of midday in

of Anaime, in
Cajamarca, located
at Tolima, adults,

in order to escape
the blistering

approaches in the
afternoon hours, the
stone made roads
begin to see the
residents once again.

Mandinguilla, el pueblo

más tradicional de las
comunidades indígenas, con las
paredes de las casas hechas de
tapia pisada y los techos de palma
de cera, amarrados con bejuco.

Mandinguilla, the unexpected
town, holds the most traditional
architecture of the indigenous
communities, with the walls made
of pressed mud and rooftops of
palm tree leaves from the typical
wax species, all tied up with reed.

La cúpula de la parroquia
Santa Rosa de Lima, en Paicol,
Huila, sobresale entre las tejas
de barro y zinc de las casas
vecinas. La puerta en medio de
la torre tal vez permita conocer
qué historias se han tejido en
su interior.

The dome of the parish at Santa
Rosa de Lima, in Paicol, located
at Huila, stands out amongst the
clay and zinc tile roofs of nearby
houses. The door in the middle of
the tower can perhaps allow stories
that have been plotted in its interior,
to be revealed to visitors.

Un desprevenido observador
podría afirmar que es esta una
casa en mal estado. En realidad
es bella, por su historia y
porque está siendo remodelada
para revivir el teatro del pueblo.
jericó, antioquia.
La sombra generada
por el sol crepuscular,
oculta las huellas que
el tiempo ha dejado
en las paredes de esta
casa colonial.

The shadows perpetrated
by the twilight sun,
conceal the trace that
time has left upon the
rooftop and the door of
this colonial house.

An unprepared observer could possibly
assure that this house is in perishable
conditions. Truth is, it is beautiful due to
its history and because it is indeed being
refurbished so that the local theatre can be
inducted.

Desde los campanarios no
solo es posible mirar hacia
el exterior, puesto que en “el
pueblo de las brujas”, La Jagua,
Huila, el viento se encarga de
llevar y traer las leyendas que
se palpan en cada centímetro
de paredes, ventanas, puertas,
pisos de madera o piedra.
la jagua, huila.
Lo que otrora fue el Convento
de San Carlos, hoy son las
instalaciones de la Alcaldía de
Mompós, frente a la plaza de la
Libertad, que sirviera de bastión
a Simón Bolívar, al punto de
afirmar que “si a Caracas debo
la vida, a Mompós debo la
gloria”.
mompós, bolívar.
That, which in other times used to be
the Convent of San Carlos, is today
the building which contains the
Mayor’s Office at Mompós, across
from the Plaza de la Libertad, which
meant the axis point for Simón
Bolívar, to the point of reassuring “if I
owe my life to Caracas, to Mompós,
I owe all glory to.”
mompós, bolívar.
The belfry allows much more
than to take a look to the
outside world, for in ‘the town
of the witches’, La Jagua, at
Huila, it is the wind who is in
charge of bringing and taking
all legends that conspicuously
appear in every inch of each
wall, of each window, of each
door, of each stone or wooden
strip of the floors.
la jagua, huila.
