WHAT’S ON AROUND TOWN

WelcomeHere at Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay we are still buzzing about the Grand Opening of Hemingway’s Country Club in recent weeks – the event was a huge success! We had around 600 people in attendance with Sunshine Coast Council’s Division 3 representative Councillor Peter Cox officiating the ceremony. Peter was joined by Palm Lake Group managing director Scott Elliott and CEO Manuel Lang (pictured above with our Caloundra Cay Sales Team). The food and entertainment was amazing and now our wonderful residents are making the most of the Country Club and its many opulent facilities.

Our new Sales Centre is well on the way to completion and we will be packing up for the move very shortly. It is a beautiful building, so we are all very excited to be moving in and sharing the space with our visitors.

If you’d like to stop by and check out Hemingway’s Country Club, we’d love to show you around it and our Prestige Collection display homes. Simply make an appointment through our Sales Centre on 1800 55 66 77 or email [email protected] and we’ll pop you in our diary.

Two storeys of life-changing leisure – that’s what our Antigua home design brings. The upstairs retreat, welcoming kitchen and tropical holiday styling combine for head-turning appeal. A display home that commands attention.

All two-storey homes in future stages at Caloundra

Cay (including Antigua, Palmira and Florencia

designs) will also include a lift, which will be an exciting

first for the Palm Lake Group.

A key selling point for the two-storey, three-bedroom Antigua home design is the space - a couple and a third (or even fourth) occupant can live together under the one roof quite comfortably.

“We’ve had enquiries from couples who are wanting to have one of their elderly parents live with them in our two-storey homes,” Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay sales manager Alysia Nechvoglod says. “There was also a couple who were interested helping out their best friend, who had recently lost her long-time partner, by having her live with them in one of these homes. And, of course, the extra space that these two-storey homes offers is perfect for when the grandchildren come to stay.”

It doesn’t matter where in Australia you live, north or south, July’s weather is probably being slightly unkind to you.Luckily, your Palm Lake Resort home is built for comfort – whatever the weather!

WARM UP YOUR WORLD

Palm Lake Group has more than 40 years of experience in building community lifestyle resorts - that’s thousands of homes for tens of thousands of people. With four decades of history in construction and utilising modern building technology, the Group has also finetuned resort home designs to ensure homeowners are as comfortable as possible – whatever the weather. Here’s how:

IF THE WALLS COULD TALK Did you know, Palm Lake Resort homes are clad in Hebel? Hebel is more sustainable and a more environmentally friendly building material, using around two-thirds less energy and half as much greenhouse emissions during production when compared to concrete or brick veneer. This lightweight masonry is made of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) which is a technical name for sand, concrete, lime and gypsum blended, with tiny pockets of air throughout. Hebel was chosen as Palm Lake Group’s favoured external cladding for its ease of handling and quick, cost-effective erection, but Hebel also offers amazing insulation properties. It will be one of the key reasons why your Palm Lake Resort home stays warm inside this winter, but equally cool in summer. Hebel really is a win-win building material.

UNDER THE BLANKET Other than the walls, the other major component of your home is your roof. Did you know there’s a snuggly and warm Anticon blanket wrapped over your roof trusses, beneath your roof cladding, keeping the cold from permeating your ceiling and entering your living space? In profile, an Anticon blanket is a layer of glasswool adhered to an impermeable reinforced foil. Lightweight, it deflects the unwanted weather while keeping heat trapped underneath/inside - just like that blanket on your bed!

TOASTY AIR All Palm Lake Resort homes come complete with reverse-cycle air conditioning and when set to ‘heat’ this winter, can make a massive impact to the livability of your abode. The general consensus is that air conditioning units are expensive to run. Obviously your exact running cost will depend on where you live and your electricity prices but, for the sake of comparison, according to Canstar Blue the average reverse-cycle air conditioner costs around $0.13 – $0.36 per hour to run for heating purposes. An electric radiant heater costs about the same at $0.36 per hour, as does an electric panel heater at $0.43, but neither of these will heat as large an area. A gas

heater costs more at $0.43 – $0.51 per hour. A University of Melbourne study found that reverse cycle heating was cheaper to run than gas heating in every city that they tested. If your home has solar panels, they will also help to bring down the cost of running your air conditioning unit.

SUN, GLORIOUS SUN Many of our newer Palm Lake Resort homes come complete with solar panels which is perfect when their lucky homeowners are considering an electrical heating option this season (and also when considering cooling in summer). Check in with our Sales Team on exactly what type of solar package is included with our new homes.

DIY TOASTY TOESWhen it comes to keeping your Palm Lake Resort home warm this winter, there’s a lot of technical thought put into home designs by our experienced designers. But there are also loads of others things you can be doing to keep yourself warm:

RUGGING UP Add some deliciously warm throws to your lounge and also your bed this winter. They are functional, yes, but also very on-trend in home decorating circles. What an excuse to update your interior!

KEEP DRAUGHTS AT BAY Is there a small crack of space under your door letting the cool air sneak in? Door snakes are a cheap and easy way to keep cold air out (and warm air in!).

WINDOW WARMERS Cold glass is the last thing you want to face in winter. Make sure you pull the blinds/curtains as soon as the sun starts to set to ensure you are insulated from any cold glass at night. And leave them closed until the morning sun is shining bright and warm. It might even be worth considering swapping your sheers for a heavier curtain, at this time of the year, if possible?

PERSONAL HEAT SOURCES A water bottle in bed (if you don’t have a doggo who you let sneak under the blankets with you at winter!) or even some inexpensive hand warmers for your pockets (generally single-use and disposable, available at major supermarkets) can be great little

personal heaters when the uber-cold weather strikes.

LAYERING UP While we can address things to do with our actual homes, have you considered yourself in this equation? Extra layers of undergarments are essential. Keep your feet warm in socks and shoes/slippers when inside. We lose a lot of heat from our heads – get yourself a tres chic beanie or hat. Scarves are also an on-trend fashion accessory.

HIT THE COUNTRY CLUB! When all else fails, head over to Hemingway’s Country Club and nab a comfy seat right alongside our gorgeous fireplace. What a way to warm up while catching up with friends!

PLANT A SEED

The thought of a car running for more than three decades is a bit of a foreign concept these days – most people trade up after 10 or so years, and move on to the next one. But when your car looks like a Panther Kallista, you’re probably more inclined to hang onto it for a while.

“It’s a poor man’s Morgan,” Tom jokes. “There was only one company in England that made Panther Kallistas, and they only produced about eight a month.”

It was certainly a worthwhile investment – Tom is still driving that car 35 years later. It’s taken him on cross-country road trips and once through five countries (the Swiss Alps included) in 24 hours. It also took Tom back and forth to his job as a set designer in London. A patternmaker by trade, Tom traded airplane propellers for television sets at the age of 21, working for Thames Television and the BBC – you can admire his handywork on shows

like Fawlty Towers, The Bill and The Benny Hill Show.

It was during that job that Tom rubbed shoulders and drank coffee with Sir Laurence Olivier, John Collins, Rod Stewart, Tommy Cooper and – most importantly – his wife Julie, who worked as a secretary at Thames Television. After years working together and meeting up in ‘Studio Four’ (the bar beside Thames Television), Tom and Julie married in 1989. But, perhaps to Julie’s chagrin, the Panther was already in the picture. That may be why there was never any question that the car would come with them when they moved to Western Australia that same year, where Tom continued designing sets for Channel 7, 9 and the ABC. Even when they packed up their life again and moved all the way across Australia to the east coast (ironically, a longer trek than the five-country marathon Tom had done with the Panther in Europe all those years before) the car came, too.

“We originally came over to look at the Palm Lake Resorts at Hervey Bay and Cooroy,” Tom says.

“But, when we found out that Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay was ready, we jumped at the chance. We literally made the moving truck, which was on its way to Hervey Bay, do a U-turn and meet us in Caloundra.”

Tom and Julie have only been retired for three years, but they’ve taken to their new lifestyle like ducks to water. They ride bikes, race horses (watching from the sidelines, Tom clarified – though his youthful nature doesn’t make it altogether impossible to imagine him on the back of a horse), play lawn bowls and tenpin bowling and, after 20-odd years, have even found a new passion for golf. Soon, though, Tom says he will sell his beloved Panther.

“It’s part of me,” Tom admits. “But I don’t drive it enough. I’ve got too much else to do, now!”

We welcomed our 50th resident in the middle of June! We hope all our new residents are enjoying living at Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cays as much as we are. Thirty-two homes are now occupied with 57 residents as of June 30. Our current statistics are: 45 per cent males and 55 per cent females with one-quarter of our population living in single households.

Meals have commenced in Hemingway’s Country Club and we are lucky to have Erik Van Alphen as our chef. Erik has worked in some of the best restaurants in France and is a classically trained French chef. Our residents are enjoying beautifully prepared handmade desserts and roasts with all the trimmings. On July 25, we will be having our first themed meal – Christmas in July – which will, no doubt, be memorable.

With the Country Club now open, it is wonderful to see our residents enjoying what is on offer, from swimming and tenpin bowling to spending a night at the movies. Some of our residents have started using the sewing machines in our arts and craft room and we hope to have a painting group up and running soon. The golf simulator room is also a very popular facility where residents can practice their swings and enjoy a bit of competition against each other. Happy Hour on Friday nights is also a big hit with many residents sitting around the fire enjoyineag each other’s company.

Take care, Ray & Lynn Johnson

Residents of Caloundra Cay no doubt know Tom Williams – if not as the rambunctious Briton who has filled the resort with fun and laughter since he and wife, Julie, arrived six months ago, then as the owner of ‘that’ eye-catching car.
