Calvin and Misty GobbleWhere is the next step going to take us?

“You have to take things one day at a time,” said Calvin, a business major at Northeast State. “Some days are better than others; you can’t let yourself get discouraged.”

A United States Army veteran, Calvin Gobble endured multiple surgeries and years of debilitating leg pain. He ultimately underwent a full knee replacement which left him unable to continue at his former job with the U.S. Postal Service. A mountain of red tape later, the Veterans Administration granted him a disability waiver that enabled him to seek a college degree.

Misty Gobble suffered a traumatic brain injury from an automobile accident in 1996. She spent months of intense therapy at a Charlottesville, Va., rehabilitation hospital learning to walk, talk, eat, and read again. Expectations were not high for her recovery.

Calvin and Misty decided to return to college and restore their professional lives at Northeast State. While the past couple of years have been challenging, the couple found great support from their families and friends. Calvin’s father currently faces serious health issues but remains determined to see his son graduate from college.

“Your parents want to see you succeed no matter how old you are,” said Calvin. “I hope our kids can see mom and dad accomplishing goals and the idea that you can do anything sinks in when they see us do it.”

After Calvin enrolled at Northeast State in 2016, Misty opted to enroll, too, and pursue a new path. That meant an adjustment for the family including their two daughters Kara and Brooklyn. For working families with children, the days include school events, softball practices, piano lessons, and church. The Gobbles managed to

juggle these responsibilities and even thrive as college students.

“You have to find a balanced schedule between school and family,” said Calvin.

“The fall semester of 2016 was my toughest so far, but I persevered with Misty and the

help of our both or families.”

Before her accident, Misty worked as a licensed massage therapist for 10 years. While a good career, the daily grind of a licensed health care worker lost its appeal to her. After spending several years substitute teaching, she switched her major Early Childhood Education this spring. Misty said the classroom brought her to a place where she belonged.

“I’ve been substituting for the last five years and completely fell in love with it,” she said. “My mother started college for a secretarial certificate but ended up pursuing a degree in education and becoming a teacher.”

Misty expects to earn her associate of applied science degree in Early Childhood Education within the next two years. She credited the TRiO Student Support Services program at Northeast State as a huge help to her development as a student. The willingness of faculty to help students learn works wonders for an individual’s morale, she added.

“The faculty take the time to tell you what you are learning,” she said.

Calvin will graduate with his associate’s degree in December. He plans to enroll at King University and pursue his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He praised the College’s Office of Veterans Affairs for their constant support through many tough times.

The Gobbles say their marriage and faith sustained them through the trials. The couple recently returned to the rehabilitation hospital where Misty was treated. Needless to say, the hospital staff was amazed and joyful about how far she had come.

“She’s a wonderful mother and truly my inspiration to keep going,” said Calvin. “I see her internalize what we’ve learned together and how she passes that on to our daughters.”

Where the good-feeling ideas and “rah-rah” speeches end, the courage to greet every day is sometimes difficult to live. The Gobbles managed to overcome various challenges. Like so many non-traditional college students, they sought to reinvent themselves and chose Northeast State as the launching pad.

“The best things in life don’t come without hard work,” said Calvin. “I look at it as what is the next step and where is the next step going to take us.”

Northeast State’s Advanced Technologies Division launched the new associate of applied science degree (A.A.S.) program in Aviation Technology this fall with more than 20 students enrolled.“With the continual growth of air travel in airlines and corporate aircraft the need for mechanics and pilots will follow,” said Richard Blevins, director of the College’s Aviation Technology department.

Created through a partnership with the Bell Helicopter aeronautics company, the Aviation Technology program seeks to fill the demand for aeronautic mechanics in the regional and national workforce. The two-year degree program requires students to complete 63 credit hours of core curriculum courses and aviation-specific courses. The College began offering a 29-credit-hour technical certificate program in Aviation Maintenance Technology in fall 2015. The new A.A.S. degree was approved by the Tennessee Board of Regents in spring 2016.

Students entering the program learn skills associated with the repair and installation of aviation electronics, aircraft structures, and aircraft mechanical systems. Students also develop core skills in fuselage and sheet metal repair, electrical systems, hydraulics, and aircraft repair. Blevins said students could get an edge by adding a second degree in Industrial Technology to broaden their skills in the disciplines of mechanics, metal fabrication, or engineering design.

“Students should pair the Aviation Technology degree with a dual degree in Industrial Technology program,” said Blevins. “Those skill sets parallel, and students who do well in Industrial Technology would succeed in the Aviation Technology program.”

The program equips students to understand the human factors involved in decision making, especially in aviation maintenance. The program also emphasizes Federal Aviation Administration history, regulations, aircraft documentation and maintenance records.

According to a 2013 Market Outlook report, aerospace industry giant Boeing expects more than 500,000 new aviation maintenance technicians will be needed worldwide, just for the airline industry, between 2015 and 2032.

The growth of aviation mechanical technology follows the booming drone industry. Blevins said the many applications for drone platforms used for aerial photography, public safety, construction, weather, and transportation just to name a few would require skilled technicians to operate and maintain these aircraft. He noted economic forecasters expected drone technology to become an $80 billion industry by the end of the decade.

Blevins brings an impressive wealth of knowledge in aerospace and air mechanics to the program. He served from 1976 to 2003 with the United States Air Force as a Chief Master Sergeant, a private pilot, and a captain in the Civil Air Patrol. He later worked for Bell Helicopter where he was a training department manager. He directed training development of more than 500 employees in the areas aircraft alternations, maintenance, and inspections to meet FAA and ISO AS 9100 requirements.

Students interested in admission to the Aviation Technology degree program may contact Blevins at 423.354.5350 or [email protected] or the Office of Admissions at [email protected].

Northeast State’s popular Dual Enrollment programs allow high school students to earn college credit while still in high school.Typically, most students earn at least six hours of credit with others obtaining 12 or more hours. In some cases, students may earn college certificates by the time they graduate from high school.

Research shows that dual enrollment students are more likely to enroll – and stay – in college and make better grades than non-participants. Plus, students get a realistic look at what it takes to do college-level work.

Northeast State offers a University Parallel Dual Enrollment Program and a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Dual Enrollment Program.

The University Parallel program is geared toward general education courses and transferable college credit. The CTE program allows students take specific classes and explore potential career fields.

Here is a look at each program:

University ParallelThe University Parallel Dual Enrollment started the 2016-2017 academic year strong with nearly 800 students enrolled. Northeast State instructors teach the courses and many of the classes are on-site at the high schools; however, students may also take courses at the College’s Blountville campus.

“Students that get college credit while they’re still in high school are only at an advantage,” said Gwen Widner, director of the College’s University Parallel Dual Enrollment program. “We may hold their hand at the start, but by the end they’re ready to go straight into the real college experience.”

Depending on ACT or SAT scores, students may sign up for one or two courses each semester. General education courses such as English, history, psychology, and speech are popular choices that provide college credit and satisfy specific courses required for high school graduation.

Program coordinator Shelby McKenzie said the experience also helps students learn to communicate with instructors and to understand the nuts and bolts of how college works.

“Since they’re still in high school, they’re in a safe place to learn and grow as students,” McKenzie said. “They have a support system that lets them learn from their mistakes and move on. I think that’s a huge advantage.”

The courses within the University Parallel program generally transfer to all colleges within

the state of Tennessee; however, students who do not plan to attend Northeast State after high school should check with the college of their choice to ensure transferability.

In addition to earning college credit, students also have their tuition costs offset thanks to the Tennessee Dual Enrollment Grant. According to Widner, the first two courses taken by students are free.

“Cost is always a big question, so the Dual Enrollment grant is a big advantage,” Widner said.

Widner and McKenzie will be hitting the road in the spring to conduct orientation sessions at area high schools. This helps students understand the enrollment process and gives the College an idea of how many students to expect in the coming school year.

“We try to make things as customer-friendly as possible so students don’t have to spend a lot of time researching the program,” Widner said. “When they get the help they need, it really helps the program grow. We especially like it

that dual enrollment is now seen as a badge of honor at the high schools.”

Career and Technical EducationThe Career and Technical Education program focuses on students who want to learn a skill or explore a specific career field.

The College works with local high schools to decide what courses and programs to offer. Examples of CTE classes include medical terminology, welding, programming, robotics, and cyber security.

Students may also choose to take part in the College’s Career Academy, which lets them earn college credit in a specific program of study.

Starting in their junior year, most Career Academy students take classes along with a group of other students from their high school. Students continue through their senior year to earn a college certificate by the time they graduate high school.

“We have 61 students in our service area who are pursuing a certificate while in high school,” said Chelsea Rose, CTE director at the College. “It’s a real confidence booster for them…because some may have not planned on going to college initially, but by the end of their senior year they are not only graduating from high school, but they are also graduating from college with a credential.”

“Students that get college credit while they’re still in high school are only at an advantage.”

Taking CreditAnna Heath makes the most of dual enrollmentWhile most dual enrollment students obtain six to 12 hours of college credit, recent Northeast State graduate, Anna Heath chalked up 25 hours on her transcript.Anna, who attended Daniel Boone High School, first learned of dual enrollment through her older brother who took math and speech classes. She liked the idea of getting college credit while in high school but didn’t plan on taking more than a few classes.

“I went into it thinking maybe I could take the classes my brother took and I’d be that much more ahead of everybody else,” Anna said. “That would be a good start, and I could get a feel of what college would be like without submerging myself completely.”

Because of her ACT scores, Anna was eligible to take four dual enrollment classes during the fall semester of her senior year. She knocked out Survey of Art History II, General Psychology, and Composition I and II. Then she went looking for more classes.

“I thought ‘this isn’t so bad; what if I do more next semester?’”

After doing a bit of research, Anna decided her best solution was to finish her senior year by taking courses at the College’s Blountville campus. Working with Northeast State’s dual enrollment office, she was able to take a math class to satisfy her one remaining high school credit requirement and also take science, sociology, and speech courses.

“Moving to the Blountville campus freaked me out a little bit,” Anna said. “The first week or two I was nervous and scared, but then I found my spot where I fit in and I didn’t have any problems, and I made all kinds of friends. Also,

the college schedule was great. We started later, we got out earlier, and I only went to class on Mondays and Wednesdays.”

Anna said the college classroom experience was very similar to high school and the class sizes were about the same.

“I think dual enrollment makes the transition easier going from high school to college because you’ve already taken college credits in high school,” Anna said. “You already know what to expect from the courses, so it’s just moving locations.”

Anna also found that college offered many opportunities to be involved on campus. She said she knew that being involved would help her to make friends and feel more comfortable with the campus.

Anna said she encourages high schoolers to try dual enrollment because it gives students a realistic look at college and gives them a jump on credits.

“If you’re planning to attend college, it’s a great way to get started,” Anna said. “It’s wonderful and I think anyone who’s considering it should give it a try because it’s definitely worth it.”

Anna graduated from Northeast State in 2016 and is currently a student at East Tennessee State University and a radiology major. She said hopes to work in that career field for a while and then perhaps apply to medical school.

Bob Carpenter

Anna Heath chalked up 25 hours of credit.

Rose said current Career Academy certificate programs include Machine Tool Operations, Entertainment Technology, Combination Welding, and Computer-Aided Drafting. All credits earned in these programs can be applied toward an Associate of Applied Science degree at the College.

Students enrolled in CTE Dual Enrollment must have approval from their high school CTE principal to participate. Classes are offered at a high school or a Northeast State campus and taught by the College’s instructors.

Rose said CTE students typically have no out-of-pocket expenses, except for textbooks – and in some cases, those are paid for as well. Students are able to take advantage

of the state’s Dual Enrollment Grant, Career Readiness Scholarships offered by Sullivan and Washington counties, and an experimental U.S. Department of Education program that allows Career Academy students to tap into Pell Grant funds.

They’re everywhere, and we’re glad they are. We’re talking about administrative professionals. The ones that schedule, code, file, smile, arrange, e-mail, and attend to details.

“I can’t think of a business that doesn’t have administrative professionals,” said Tracy Eades, department head of Northeast State’s Administrative Professional Technology program. “There’s a genuine need for their behind-the-scenes skills.”

Northeast State’s Administrative Professional Technology (APT) degree program offers three concentrations: Business Office, Legal Office, and Medical Office. Each concentration shares common courses such as Business Communications, Spreadsheet Applications, and Office Procedures before branching into courses tailored for each particular concentration.

Each requires 60 total credit hours and graduates are awarded an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S) degree. Students that complete the program may take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification exams. Also, students pursuing the Medical Office Concentration may take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam offered by AAPC.

Eades said the common courses allow students to acquire basic office skills while also polishing the soft skills of office etiquette. Students learn to plan events, create agendas, and format other business correspondence. They also learn to interact with the public and how to dress professionally.

“We’re not just teaching word processing; we’re teaching them how to be professional in a business environment,” said Eades. “I tell the students when they walk into my classroom, they’ve walked into a business office, and they work for me.”

Eades said many of her students are non-traditional, meaning they may be returning to the classroom after being out of school for many years or enrolling because they lost their jobs due to an economic downturn. “It’s hard for some of them to talk positively about themselves because they only see negatives,” said Eades. “We work with them to bring out skills they don’t think they have.”

Sharon Riddle, an APT instructor, related an example of this practice. Riddle said this semester she has an introverted student who does excellent work, but always sits on the back row and never asks questions. Hoping to shine a light on the student’s potential, Riddle

How did you arrive at your decision to attend NE State?I was a housewife. I had always been content in my life…sometimes I felt like I had given up something, but I just didn’t think about it very much. After I turned 40, that feeling got bigger. I wanted something more.

I wanted to go back to work, but I knew my skills needed improvement. I had known someone who attended NE State as a non-traditional student, and he talked about how great a place it was for older people still trying to find a path to follow. So, I started scouring the website for information.

Why did you choose to major in Administrative Professional Technology? If you want to enter the business world, but you don’t have the technical skills to do it, you need the skills of an administrative professional. You need to know the most current and most used software that you will face in the workplace. You also need to know soft skills – communication, etiquette, negotiating, and presenting. Learning how to be an administrative professional teaches you how to enter the business world with all the skills that will be expected of you.

There are a few very nice bonuses to entering the workforce as an Administrative Professional. First, every single business needs you. Your skills are vital to the day-to-day operation of a company. Second, an entry-level job as an Administrative Assistant will expose you to more of the inner workings of a business than just about any other entry-level position. And, third, walking in with that degree from NE State is going to give you skills that most of your co-workers do not have.

What were some of the toughest challenges you faced as an adult student?Being a non-traditional student is HARD! I don’t want to sugarcoat that for anyone. You are always going to be struggling to get everything done. You will always feel like you are cheating someone you love out of something. There will be a day, when you are fighting a cold, your little one is home from school, you are in a spat with your husband, the laundry is piling up, your car is in the shop, you are late paying the electric bill, and you have about three hours of homework to finish in 30 minutes. You will have more than one of those days, but you are going to have those days (minus the homework) even if you don’t go back to school. At the end of all this hard work, you are going to be educated. It’s going to be worth it.

How big a role did the faculty play in your success? The faculty at NE State is like my family. By that I mean, they wanted to see me succeed. They saw my potential long before I did. And, the amazing thing is, they are like that with every single person who enters their classrooms. They understand what non-traditional students are giving up to return to school. Most of them were non-traditional students themselves at some

point. They know the sacrifice and the reward of getting an education.

What words of encouragement would you offer to a non-traditional student who’s thinking about attending or returning to college? You are not alone. Whenever you are in a class and struggling with all of it, look around at your fellow students. Note the other non-traditional ones in the room. I can assure you that they are all struggling, too. It isn’t easy for anyone. When you look around at those other students, draw strength from them. They are your silent companions.

Your family loves you. While you are working on your degree, you are going to come to understand just how much your family loves you. You are going to fight with your spouse. They are also going to do your chores, walk the dog, make dinner, quiz you for your test, listen to your angry rants, and hold you when you cry. Your kids are going to complain that you never spend time with them; you will cry yourself to sleep with guilt; you are going to blow off studying to go to their basketball game; and you are going to be their example of working hard to get what you want in life. Your mom, sister, dad, brother, cousin, step-daughter, and great grandmother are going to step up and be the person you need the most; and at the end of all this, they aren’t going to be the one with the degree. You are. That is how much they love you.

Can you provide a few details about your current employment?I am currently employed as the Physician Recruitment Coordinator for Wellmont Medical Associates. The department recruits physicians in every specialty from all over the country to staff WMA positions in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia in hospitals, clinics, and private practices. My role consists of providing administrative support to the department, as well as sourcing for physician candidates using a variety of methods. The most rewarding thing about my job is knowing that everything I do is with the goal of bringing the best health care to every person in our region. I am proud to say that what I do has a profound impact on people’s lives.

What are some rewarding things about being an administrative professional?I am very proud of what I bring to the workplace. I have been able to use the skills I have learned at NE State to change and enhance some of our recruitment efforts. Because of my thorough education in software applications, I have been able to create flyers, mailers, and other visual ads to attract attention from potential recruits. I have created databases of residency programs to target specific specialties and top-performing doctors. It is a pleasure to say that I have brought talents and skills into my workplace that have enhanced the way others do their jobs. My co-workers are often stunned at the depth and breadth of my skills. These are skills I learned at NE State.

recently asked the student to serve as a team leader on a team project. At first reluctant, the student rallied and went to work organizing her team.

“She came up and thanked me for putting her in that position,” said Riddle. “She said she’s going to work hard and wants me to be proud of her because she’s going to do a good job. Her leadership abilities were there; I was just trying to get her to realize she had them.”

Administrative professionals are detail-oriented, confident, well-spoken, and flexibleEades and Riddle stated the program works to give students real-world experience. One example is the capstone experience class that integrates skills obtained throughout the course of the program. The goal is to help students extend these skills in a variety of virtual team projects.

“They have to plan a project, schedule meetings, develop a budget, do research, and learn to use apps like Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive to share information,” said Riddle. “It helps them to see what it’s like to work and interact as a team.”

During their studies, students also take part in career planning and self-assessment, create professional resumes, and cover letters. Instructors also bring business and industry experts in to conduct mock interviews and give tips on how to dress for success and speak professionally.

“The students enjoy those sessions,” said Eades. “It gives them a good idea of what to expect in the real world.”

Eades said successful administrative professionals are detail-oriented, confident, well-spoken, and flexible with a desire to help others.

“Managers and supervisors are always going to need support staff to do paperwork, plan events, check in patients, design flyers, and all the other things that make an office run smoothly,” said Eades. “They work behind the scenes and may not have a gold star on them that says ‘look at me,’ but if it were not for them, all the things we take for granted wouldn’t get done.”

Riddle summarizes: “We’re everywhere in every business.”

And we’re glad they are.
