CORE COURSESPsychology of Chronic Illness
This course examines the medical, psychological and sociocultural factors related to various types of physical, neurological, sensory, psychiatric, and pain-related disabilities. Focus will be on the etiology of chronic illness, evidence based treatment interventions and the psychological impact on both the patient and their significant others. Psychosocial assessment, treatment planning and the valuable use of resources to assist the patient and their families will also be explored.
Psychology of Death and Dying This course explores all aspects in the process of loss and death. The focus of study includes attitudes towards death, historical and current, incorporated into theory and practice and the integration of conceptual knowledge within the human experience. The learner will explore his or her community to identify and research referrals for future clients who have terminal illnesses or have experienced a death in their family.
Psychology of Stress and Stress Related Disorders This course explores multiple causes of stress and stress related psychopathologies. The focus of study emphasizes the emotional and physiological manifestation of differential diagnostic symptoms.
The Psychology of the Mind I: Mind-Body Connection The psychology of the Mind-Body Connection provides an introductory examination of how the mind and body are intimately related. The course reviews models for healing and health through understanding how the mind interacts with the body to effect positive change. The course examines scientific advances in the fields of neuroscience and consciousness and their impact on mind-body healing. Learners will be able to determine the relationship between healing and illness, focusing on specific therapeutic interventions. Learners are also encouraged to develop a personal model of mental health care and to understand complimentary methods for self and client, offering an active role for clients in the development of their healing process. This course focuses on areas of interest to therapists who work in mental health care settings and those planning to in the future. It will inform the individual on mind-body techniques.
Course Information
The healthcare services certificate consists of four core course in mental health and is supplemented with two elective courses that can be taken in mental health, healthcare administration, economics or informatics.
Courses are offered monthly. Some of the required core and elective courses for the certificate may be applied towards meeting the requirements for a CalSouthern master’s degree.

The Psychology of the Mind II: Mind-Body Connection
The psychology of the Mind-Body Connection II
provides a further examination of how the mind and
body are intimately related. The course continues the
investigation into models for healing and health through
understanding how the mind interacts with the body to
effect positive change. The course examines scientific
advances in the fields of psychoneuroimmunology and
consciousness and their impact on mind-body healing.
Learners will be able to determine the relationship
between healing and illness, focusing on specific
therapeutic interventions. Learners are also encouraged
to develop a personal model of mental health care and
to understand complimentary methods for self and client,
offering an active role for clients in the development
of their healing process. This course focuses on areas

Counseling Theories and Strategies
This course explores the major psychotherapeutic
models and theories in current use. The focus is on the
application of techniques to a variety of clinical situations
to improve, restore, or maintain healthy individual,
couple, and family relationships. Emphasis is given to
the development of those personal qualities that are
intimately related to the counseling situation such as
integrity, sensitivity, flexibility, insight, compassion, and
personal presence.
Healthcare Informatics
This course provides the learner with the fundamentals
of healthcare delivery systems, health information
management, and health information systems based
on the core competencies as defined by the American
Health Information Management Association, or
AHIMA, relative to what learners need to know to
be knowledgeable in healthcare informatics. The
learner explores delivery fundamentals, accreditation,
regulations, electronic records, coding, and
reimbursement. They also learn the importance of
healthcare transactions, billing, health statistics, research,
and decision-making processes.
Healthcare Administration
This course focuses on providing the learner with a
systematic understanding of 21st century healthcare
leadership and administrative skills. Learners review
new healthcare leadership skills relative to complex
systems, the inter-relationships among key stakeholders
in the industry, cultural diversity, creative and intuitive
problem solving techniques, and corporate governance.
Administrative topics concerning healing spaces and
environments, culturally driven designs, “going green,”
and innovative facility layouts are also covered.
Healthcare Economics
This course explores the healthcare profession from
an economic and decision making perspective as this
industry continues to growth in size, both in dollars and
relative to overall economic activity in the United States.
Learners will explore areas of cost-effectiveness analysis,
game theory, supply and demand factors impacting
medical care, and staffing issues. In addition, the impacts
of medical malpractice, regulations, technologies,
HMOs, Medicaid, insurance providers, and types of
intervention are also discussed relative to improving the
learner’s skills in the medical profession.
Alcoholism/Chemical Dependency
This course reviews the current theories of the etiology of
substance abuse, medical and legal aspects, personality
factors, physiological and psychological effects of
alcoholism and chemical dependency and explores the
treatment methods and strategies from an individual and
family systems perspective. Community resources, the
referral process, and recognition of populations at risk
are covered.
