We are excited to send you this team of five talented and enthusiastic missionary disciples to be authentic witnesses of Jesus Christ and to bring the Good News to the young people in your area. ENCOURAGING YOUNG PEOPLE TO LOVE JESUS AND EMBRACE THE CHURCH SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME -23RD FEBRUARY 2020 Proper of the Mass First reading: Lev 19:1-2, 17-18 Second Reading: 1 Cor 3:16-23 Gospel: Mt 5:38-48 And It All Begins on Wednesday This Season of Lent is a time of fasting, almsgiving and consciously making room for God in our busy lives. Whatever image comes to your mind, with the distribution of ashes this Wednesday we begin another Lenten journey together. Once again there are many opportunities to grasp hold of during these coming 40 days. FASTING & ABSTINENCE: Ash Wednesday is one of two days of fasting and abstinence set down by the Church, the other being Good Friday. In current Catholic practice, Fasting means having only one full meal a day. Smaller quantities of food may be eaten at two other meals but no food should be consumed at any other time during the day. The law of fasting applies to those who are 18 to 59 years old. Abstinence is the practice of abstaining from the use of certain kinds of food. Everyone aged 14 years and older is required to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The spirit of the law may invite us to extend the fast to things other than food – tweeting, surfing the net, gambling or gossiping. The minimum fasting requirements make most sense when they are combined with prayer and almsgiving. The Catholic practice of fasting and almsgiving aims at leading us to interior conversion. We fast in order to share our time and our treasure with an attitude of love towards God and others. DAILY MASS: Why not incorporate daily Mass into your Lenten journey this year?. We have many Masses throughout the parish during the week. ADORATION: Every Wednesday after the School Liturgy at Caloundra there is Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 10am through to Benediction at 4:45pm and Mass at 5pm. As part of your Wednesday routine, why not incorporate a visit to Our Lady of the Rosary church. STATIONS OF THE CROSS: There will be Stations of the Cross every Friday at 10am at Caloundra and 4.30pm at Maleny. LITTLE BLACK BOOKS: Available at each church are the Little Black Books, which contain short and appropriate daily reflections which are a tremendous companion throughout the days of Lent. A gold coin donation to cover the cost would be appreciated. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT: This Lent why not mark in your diary the Taize prayer opportunity at Caloundra (Tuesday, March 10 at 7pm) or Maleny (Wednesday, March 11th at 7pm). RECONCILIATION: Forgiveness should be part of everyone’s Lenten journey. It is never easy! Every Saturday at OLR church from 8:30 to 9am. Our Communal Rite of Reconciliation takes place during Holy week. PROJECT COMPASSION: A practical and life giving aspect of Lent has always been our sacrifices and the ability to financially support, through the Project Compassion Appeal, those who have come off second best. Indeed, Project Compassion is something that all individuals and families can be involved in. Envelopes are available at the entrance to the Church. LENTEN PROGRAMME: This year the Lenten Programme is entitled, “Be Opened—A journey to new life” . All those who have been part of the programme in previous Lents have found it a valuable part of their journey – it’s not too late to be part of it this year. Contact the Parish office on 5491 2011. LENT IS A SOLEMN SEASON: You will notice that together we will pray the Confiteor while the Gloria is omitted until the great celebrations of Easter. As a Catholic Parish, as individuals and as families, Lent is an important time. To ensure that the grace of this season, and all the God-given opportunities, do not just slip through our fingers; it is important to think now how this Lent will be different and life transforming. First reading: Lev 19:1-2, 17-18 Second Reading: 1 Cor 3:16-23 Gospel: Mt 5:38-48

And It All Begins on Wednesday This Season of Lent is a time of fasting, almsgiving and consciously making room for God in our busy lives. Whatever image comes to your mind, with the distribution of ashes this Wednesday we begin another Lenten journey together.

Once again there are many opportunities to grasp hold of during these coming 40 days.

My fellow parishioners, During the week I had the opportunity to write to all parishioners who are part of our parish Planned Giving programme and

thank them for their generosity and support. As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, the generous commitment of

parishioners and friends to the Planned Giving programme, provides us with the confidence to budget and plan. On behalf of

the entire parish, thank you.

Part of my letter included a snapshot of our current parish financial position:

In short, last year we were just able to cover all our costs but with everything else going on, this year we are worried that we will struggle to do so again. At the Parish Finance Committee meeting, as well as the Evangelization & Pastoral Council meeting, we discussed some of the challenges facing our Catholic Community. While the list is not exhaustive, it does capture some of our priorities as we look to the future.

Ultimately we can only achieve what we are financially capable of achieving. Hopefully you can see where your money goes

and that, as a Parish, we are transparent with our finances and are good stewards of the resources you give us.

This weekend I extend a warm invitation to those not already involved in the Planned Giving programme to seriously

consider making a commitment to your parish and joining. By weekly envelopes or direct debit, your financial support is

important. I can assure you that everyone’s commitment is appreciated and valued and no-one’s financial sacrifice is taken

for granted.

If you are already a member of the parish Planned Giving programme and you are happy to continue there is

nothing that you have to do - thank you.

If you are a member of the Parish Planned Giving programme and you would like to change the level of your

contribution, simply contact the Parish Office.

If you would like to join the Parish Planned Giving programme you are invited to collect the information

package at the entrance doors. By completing the paperwork and either posting back or placing it on one of the

collections plates, we will ensure your membership in the Planned Giving programme.

To everyone who in any way financially supports the Parish, your generosity and trust is appreciated. It is only

with the confidence of your support that we can embrace the exciting challenges that lie ahead.

Fr Peter Brannelly

THE CHALLENGES FACING OUR PARISH COMMUNITY

Aura, the master-planned housing development south of Caloundra, is anticipated to have a population of over 40,000

when completed. In their master planning, Stockland project up to 5 public primary schools, 2 public high schools, shopping centre the size of Chermside, railway lines and hospitals. We need to be there! Working in collaboration with Brisbane Catholic Education, the parish needs to secure land for a future Catholic school and church.

Refurbishment of the former parish office adjacent to the OLR Church into two dedicated meeting rooms, a new

disability toilet and a servery/kitchenette. The creation of a covered gathering area between the OLR Church and presbytery.

To continue with the systematic maintenance of our Parish assets including the repainting of Sacred Heart church,

Maleny.

In partnership with Unity College, the Parish goal is to fund a NET team for the next three years with the emphasis on

developing Catholic youth structures within the Parish and strengthening Parish/School connections.

The refurbishment of the current Parish Office to provide appropriate meeting/interview space, offices for the priests

and functional work areas for the Parish staff.

To fund and promote the ALPHA programme and other adult faith education programmes with the intention of

identifying and forming the next generation of Parish leaders.

To promote the Parish Endowment Fund as a viable way to support the Parish in perpetuity.

In Transition May the soul of Arnold Ruetschi whose funeral is on Wednesday

26th February at G&W Caloundra, and Jean Gott whose funeral was on Thursday at

OLR, and all our deceased parishioners, religious and Priests

through the rich mercy of God, Rest in Peace.
