MURALS UPDATE As advertised in the last edition, interested parties recently met to plan a way forward to renovate the town’s murals and consider ways to enhance the town with artwork. Many positive suggestions were made and it is intended to pursue grant funding to ensure that high quality work is carried out by persons with the expertise and experience of large scale projects such as this. It was felt that one of the most important aspects was to ensure that community involvement was a high priority, along with skills enhancement and building a sound understanding amongst residents of the town’s heritage. Members present were tasked with contacting relevant people in the fields of professional artists, heritage experts and grant funding bodies who will then be invited to visit the town, inspect the murals, discuss possibilities and provide professional guidance. Missed the first meeting, but still interested in being a part of the project? The next meeting will be held in Callington Town Hall at 7.30pm on 3rd November by which time we hope to have more information. Full Steam Ahead for The Railway Children

When Father is taken away by two strangers on suspicion of espionage, the lives of Roberta, Peter and Phyllis are shattered. Suddenly impoverished, their mother is forced to take them from their comfortable London home to live in Yorkshire in a modest cottage. Whilst there, they learn about the railway from their new friend Perks, and soon fall in love with it. New friendships, new adventures and dangers await the ‘Railway Children’.

But what has happened to father? Where is he, and will he ever come back?

Rotary is going purple for Polio If you see a group of people wearing purple bobble hats in November it will be your Callington Rotary Club who will be planting 1,000 purple Crocus bulbs around Callington. These bulbs should flower next Spring. Apart from being a welcome sight after winter these will remind everyone how close (but also so far) we are from eradicating Polio from the world. Purple has been chosen because when a child from a third world country is inoculated against Polio their first finger is dyed purple as visible evidence they have had their injection. Rotary worldwide has been one of the constant supporters to eradicate this awful disease and Callington Rotary Cub has, and will continue to do its part .Thankfully although some of the older of us can remember children stricken with this horrible disease our own children don’t have this personal knowledge. Let’s continue the push and get rid of it worldwide.

Callington Heritage Centre

Autumn, season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, time to wax poetical and look back at this years Exhibition. Yes, it has been six months since opening ‚Schools and Education‛ and now term over and we have to turn our faces to next year.

I’ve said it before, but we have had such positive feedback from our visitors that it’s going to be a hard act to follow. Nevertheless, this is what we do and dare I say it, do it rather well. However, we still have underlying problems with an inherent need to recruit key personnel to assist with management tasks. That and a need to identify local keyholders, will greatly improve our lot. This is something which we shall be endeavouring to rectify over the close season. Our thanks to everyone who visited, bringing in their memorabilia along with their reminiscences. Thanks also to the faithful few who maintained their stewarding presence and made attendance at the Heritage Centre such a pleasure. Despite Winter closure, we can often be found on Friday afternoons keeping up with the housework, so if you need to contact us our number remains the same, best to ring first - Heritage Centre 01579 389506. Here’s to 2017!

(The photo attached shows a couple of our pupils, one Junior at her desk, one Senior, the latter showing off his Callington Grammar School Blazer and cap.)

Little Spanish Stars is an enjoyable and fun way to learn Spanish for young children in a fun environment After spending eight years teaching Spanish at secondary school level, it was clear that teenagers struggled to learn a new language as they had not started young enough.

Children often arrive in secondary education with little knowledge of another language and are now all expected to do a GCSE in one, this for many is a huge struggle, because older learners lose the ability to hear and reproduce new sounds by the age of 8-12. The younger the learner the better they are at mimicking new sounds and adapting pronunciation so at a young age the brain is open to new sounds and patterns. This inspired me to start 'Little Spanish Stars'. At Little Spanish Stars children have fun singing songs, dancing with props and learning new words and sounds, while being away from the classroom environment.

Sessions are currently running in Callington Scout Hut on Tuesdays 10am (18mths-4 years) and Thursdays 10am (4mths-18mths) and 4pm (5 -7 yrs). I am also available for nurseries, schools and private tuition To find out more find us on FB- little Spanish stars or email [email protected]/

Ahead of Halloween, live film company The Paper Cinema presents a bewitching new

production based on ghostly tales from Callington.

Beguiling pen and ink drawings are magically

brought to life by two puppeteers and a projector to create a unique, animated film.

They are joined by a hugely talented ensemble of

multi-instrumentalists (including violin, guitar, musical saw and live looping) performing the

atmospheric soundtrack live on stage.

Each act in this new show draws on a story from the villages performed in during the tour. Original material was initiated during a workshop held by The Paper Cinema with pupils from Callington

Primary School.

Thanks to the Fire Brigade

It is very reassuring that Callington has a band of people that put themselves in a position to help and assist others. We must take into account that they all have day jons and employers that are sympathetic to their retained position as a volunteer Firefighters.

On Thursday 8th September at around 7.15am my colleague and I were taking an early morning brisk walk down South Hill Road when the first car arrived at the Fire Station being driven by the Station Officer. Within the next four minutes another four cars arrived carrying five more officers, all in different states of dress or undress (having been, no doubt, still in bed at the time of the call out).

We timed them leaving the Fire Station, this was another four minutes, what a great response from volunteers. In less then ten minutes, six officers arrived, manned the Fire Engine and were on their way to assist in an emergency somewhere. Hopefully, the incident was such that there was no damage to life or limb. Many thanks chaps and well done! We appreciate all that you do within our Community and the surrounding areas.

Henry assumes it is illicit cash and decides to keep it; he rushes to book a one-way ticket to Barcelona. However, as things go wrong, Henry’s inept attempts to extricate from this impossible situation lead to increasingly hysterical situations.

NEWS FROM CORNWALL COUNCIL It has been a tough summer for many parts of Cornwall Council. The continuing cuts to all areas of service are now beginning to dig deep and this will get worse

as winter approaches. Cormac continue to deal with pot holes as quickly as they can but do rely on members of the public to report them via the website www.cornwall.gov.uk. The works to the A30 continue apace and they are on schedule to complete the new dualling of the section at Temple by April next year. The major works in Bodmin have now started and could take up to 12 months to complete so please be aware of the delays this will cause and leave plenty of time for any trips that involve passing the town.
