Transcript of Calling - Issue 26 - (25 August 2011)
Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family,
Last Sunday I had the pleasure of listening to the St Patrick’s Intermediate Band perform at the Queensland Catholic Schools Music Festival. The band, which comprised of students across a number of year levels, performed very well. They were awarded a SILVER medal in their category. This is a great result and I congratulate the students and the Band Leader, Mr Andrew Will, on their performance. It would be great to see more students involved in the Band program at school. If your son is interested please contact Mr Will. Well done to all members of the Intermediate Band.
I wish to thank the staff, students and parents who assisted with OPEN DAY last Tuesday. Despite the fact that the weather was not great crowds were strong. There was plenty on display for our current and future families to see. As I moved around the College I was again very proud of the talent, dedication and pride being displayed by the St Patrick’s College Community. Whether it was Year 5 proudly showing off their classrooms, or the art students show casing their art works or the range of student work on the subject displays, or the bands in the battle of the bands, it was very evident that the students wanted to be there and were keen to showcase ‘their’ school. My thanks to everyone who assisted on the day and especially to Mr David Gardiner, for his overall coordination of the day. Well done and thanks to all.
This week the third trimester of AIC Sports begin with the start of the tennis and basketball seasons. These sports are very popular at St Patrick’s College and I look forward to a successful season over the upcoming weeks. On Thursday the College hosted the Basketball and Tennis Spirit Assembly. I congratulate the students who have been selected into the 1st tennis and basketball teams and in particular the captains of each sport:
Captain of Tennis Sam Anderson Captain of Basketball Vytautas Milvydas
I wish all players the very best over the season and encourage them always to ‘play hard’ but also to display the highest level of sportsmanship.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday the Year 12 students participate in the QCS Test. These are very important tests for the students and I know that the entire St Patrick’s College community will be supporting the students over these days. The year 12 staff and students have prepared well for these tests and I am confident that they will perform very well.
Finally this week I congratulate Kennedy and Treacy House on their victory at the Interhouse Athletics Carnival last week. It was a great day and I thank the staff and the many parents that assisted and attended on the day. A great day was had by all.
Have a great week.
God Bless

It has been an outstanding week for the sense of community of St Patrick’s. I was thrilled to see so many parents at last Friday’s Inter-House Athletics Carnival plus at the Open Day, Battle of the Bands and Theatre Sports this Tues-day. The excellent attendance by the students at the Athletics plus the hundreds who stayed to be a part of the Open Day, along with the very strong parent and staff involvement, truly displayed the exceptional spirit and sense of community at St Patrick’s. Well done to all involved. It has been a significant week for me as a member of Edmund Rice Education Australia. On Monday Mr Hawkins, Giles Beveridge, Chris Holley and myself attended the official launch at St James’s College of the Charter of Ed-mund Rice Education Australia. Since the introduction of EREA in 2004 as our governing body we have had a Charter to provide direction for all our schools. Recently the Charter has been reviewed and this week the new edition was launched nationally. St Patrick’s, and all the other schools in our network, will officially launch the Charter in our school in the near future. Embraced by each school, the Charter aims to inspire school communities to foster energetically the vision of a charis-matic leader, Blessed Edmund Rice, in the Spirit of Christ and the educational mission of the Catholic Church. The Con-gregational Leader, Brother Phillip Pinto, challenged all communities that the test of the new Charter will be in how we act. The Charter has four touchstones:- Liberating Education Gospel Spirituality Inclusive Community Justice and Solidarity Each of these touchstones have significant challenges for us as a community if we are to be truly a Catholic School in the Edmund Rice Tradition. During the second part of the week I have attended the EREA National Deputy Principals’ Conference. It is very reas-suring personally to be a part of such a strong dynamic group of educators. Over forty Deputy Principals from our schools across Australia attended the conference, with the theme of ‘One Spirit: Many Voices’. One of the many strengths of EREA is the diverse yet collaborative nature of such gatherings.
FIRST DEBATORS HAVE HISTORIC WIN Late Wednesday evening our Firsts Debating made St Patrick’s College history as they bravely faced a QDU Quarter Final. The boys, Thymon Venter, Aaron Loader, Liam Polkinghorne and Captain Nathanial Trappett, spent many hours preparing for the brain battle. Mr Brough, the usual Year 12 support crew (including a large number of wonderful young ladies from our surrounding schools), special guest Lorraine O’Sullivan (past SPC Debating Co-Ordinator) and many opposition supporters, were not left disappointed. The young men showed their best debating form and were triumphant against the ladies from St Margaret’s. Congratulations to the whole team on what was an inspirational victory. No matter what happens from here they have done themselves and their College very proud. Please join us in cheering them on at their Semi-Final. It’s a short preparation debate so boys will only be given one hour to prepare the top-ic. Likely opponents are Brisbane Grammar School.

Many thanks to the large number of parents and boys who attended the Year 8 subject selection meeting on Monday evening. Heads of Curriculum were available to answer questions reported a great deal of in-terest in the process. All students should have received their username and password for the Online Selec-tion program as well as a subject selection booklet. Please see Mrs Nott if you have not collected these items. The online program will close on 2 September for Year 8 students. Year 10 SET planning will take place on Friday of this week. The interviews will be held in the library. Please bring your completed SET plan as well as a printed receipt from the online subject selection program. All boys are required to attend in full school uniform. Online subject selection for Year 10 closes on Friday 26 August. There are also opportunities for current Year 10 students to undertake VET certificate courses during Year 11 & 12 through SkillsTech Australia. SkillsTech is the lead TAFE institute in trade and technician training for more information please see me. Next Tuesday and Wednesday Year 12 OP students and any non OP boys will complete the 2011 QCS Test. We would like all boys to gather for breakfast at the Callan Centre by 7.30 on each morning. Dr Carroll spoke to the Year 12s this week about the need to approach the QCS as a team. Hence, as a team, the boys will gather and focus on the mornings of each of the test days. A final reminder that all boys must sign the calculator declaration before the test. Please do a final check of equipment to ensure that all calcu-lators, highlighters pens etc are accounted for. Students were given a clear pencil case on the final practice day, this needs to be brought on both days.
FIVE CENT FUNDRAISER Last weekend nearly 100 students took part in the 40 Hour Famine to raise mon-ey for the people of East Timor. As part of this year’s famine, and as part of the Year 8 Maths assignment, we asked each student to bring in fifty five cent coins each to represent the number of people who die of poverty every day. Thanks to a fantastic effort we managed to collect just under 49,000
coins, and raised just under $2,500. This is enough to feed a village of 50 people for six months. Thank you to everyone who bought in coins and a special thanks to Treacy 1 & O’Rourke 1 who were the winning Tutor Groups.
JUST US DIDGERIDOO WINNER Congratulations to James Hall in Year 5 who won the hand-painted didgeridoo from the Just Us magazine trivia com-petition. Keep an eye out for more great prizes in the Term 3 edition of Just Us.

EXAM TIMETABLE TERM 3 2011
Page 4
I would like to congratulate the large number of students who gave up their time for Open Day on Tuesday afternoon. The sense of pride and community was certainly evident on the day through the actions of the students during the guided tours or working in the various classrooms. BLOCK EXAMS All students in Years 12 will commence block exams next week on Friday 2 September. Students in this year level only come to school when they have exams. While at home it is important to utilise this time productively for exam preparation. When attending school for exams it is important that students do not leave the grounds of the College at any time. IPods and Mobile phone are not permitted to be used on the school grounds. YEAR 12 STUDENT TERM EXIT PROCEDURE On Thursday 1 September students in Year 12 will be involved in a Term exit process. The process will involve students being signed off by the Academic and Pastoral areas of the College. Year 12 students will meet with their House Deans during Period 7 and once they have been processed are able to leave school to commence their block exams. If a student has not fulfilled his Academic or Pastoral commitments he will be required to stay at school during block exams until all those commitments have been fulfilled. All students must have their parents/guardians sign the forms. PUBLIC TRANSPORT St Patrick’s is a great school but it can be let down in its public image if the students are poorly behaved on public transport. The College will not tolerate poor behaviour on public transport. Students misbehav-ing in this area will face a range of consequences as a result of their actions. Boys who catch the train to and from school are reminded that they are not to break their journey. If they are changing trains at Northgate Station they must catch the first available train to their destination. Students must not wait around on the platform for friends and then catch the late train as this often delays their arrival to school. MOBILE PHONES We understand the need for many students to have a phone, particularly for communication purposes. St Patrick’s has a policy of taking a student’s phone if it is seen or heard during school hours. This aims to minimize the inappropriate use of mobile phones at school. The Mobile Phone Policy is clearly outlined in the College Diary. I encourage all parents to read the policy and to support the College in maintaining a good teaching and learning environment. LOST PROPERTY The Student Office is accumulating a large amount of lost property. Please ensure your son’s gear has his name clearly marked on it as this ensures speedy return of property. I also encourage you and/or your son to check the lost property in the Student Office for any missing items. FAMILY INFORMATION UPDATE I would request that you please check that all address and parent contact details are correct. This can be completed firstly through Parent Lounge on the College website or by phoning the College Main Office on 36319000.

We had a great response from parents and friends of the College after the article about our resent trip to Cherbourg. We will publish some responses from the students in the coming weeks. Paul Corfield and Mathew Makot are travelling to Parliament House in Canberra on the 25th August as part of the “My first speech” competition Mathew entered. He will meet the Deputy Leader Wayne Swan as well as have lunch with the standing committee on immigration. We will report on this in the next issue of The Call-ing. Pope Benedict XVI addressed the 13th World Youth Day celebration held in Madrid, Spain last week. He addressed the question put to him by the youth of the world: “How can young people be true to the faith and yet continue to aspire to high ideals in to-day’s society?” His answer was simple and straight forward: “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love.” (Jn 15:9). God loves us. This is the great truth of our life; it is what makes everything else meaningful. We are not the product of blind chance or absurdity; instead our life origi-nates as part of a loving plan of God. As our Year 12 boys ready themselves for QCS and the last few weeks of their school career here at St Patrick’s, I felt that the Pope’s response echoed my own sentiment. As a teacher and also this year as a parent with a son in Year 12, I believe that the edu-cation – the loving and caring environment – here at school, the dedication of the staff and the friend-ships from mates and friends, will assist our boys out
there in the big wide world when they leave the Col-lege gate to take their rightful place as young men in society. So my prayer for our young men this week is that they will be reassured that they are loved and through this love try to make the world a better place.
Father, I have knowledge, so I pray you'll show me now
How to use it wisely and find a way somehow To make the world I live in
a little better place, And make life, with its problems,
a bit easier to face... Grant me faith and courage and put purpose in my days,
And show me how to serve you in the most effective ways
So all my education, my knowledge and my skill, May find their true fulfilment as I learn to do your will... And may I ever be aware
in everything I do That knowledge comes from learning -
And wisdom comes from You. God Bless

What is QTAC? QTAC is the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre. QTAC publishes course information and processes ter-tiary applications for all Queensland universities (and northern NSW), TAFE Queensland institutes, South-bank Institute of Technology (SBIT) and selected colleges. QTAC also provides information about institu-tions with self-managed admissions to help students consider a broader range of study options. Please note: applications for these courses are handled by the institution, not QTAC. What is the QTAC guide? The QTAC guide is published annually and contains information on tertiary courses, institutions, application procedures and alternative pathways to tertiary study. The QTAC Guide is provided free to Year 12 students and can also be purchased from QTAC, most news agencies and the QTAC website. Additional information can also be found on the QTAC website. When should applications be submitted? QTAC applications open on the 1st of August 2011. The on-time application due date for all courses commenc-ing semester 1, 2012 is 30 September 2011. There will be a session to assist all Year 12 students with their applications.
http://www.qtac.edu.au/InfoSheets/OrderingPreferences.html What scholarships are available? In addition to institution specific academic and sporting scholarships, commonwealth and institution equity scholarships are available to low income students. Refer to page 15 in the QTAC Guide and check out univer-sity websites for scholarships that are currently available.

How much will tertiary study cost? Is there any help with the cost? Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) exist for public universities. This cost is subsidised by the federal government and the student contributes the rest. The HECS-HELP scheme allows Australian students to gradually repay their contribution once they are earning a salary of approximately $44, 912. Students can pay up front (for some or all of the contribution) and receive a 20% discount if they pay over $500. More information is available at www.goingtouni.gov.au. TAFE and SBIT courses maybe government subsidised, partially government funded or full fee. VET-FEE HELP of FEE-HELP may be available for some courses. Courses at private institutions are generally not sub-sidised by the government, but loans for study may be available. Contact the particular institution for de-tails. Centerlink offers Youth Allowance, Austudy, ABSTUDY and other income support services for eligible stu-dents. Visit www.facebook.com/StudentUpdate, phone 132490 or www.centrelink.gov.au for more infor-mation on income support. What can I do to help?
Begin researching and planning now – accommodation, budgets, transport, subject information Make yourself and your son familiar with their new environment. Take a trip together to the
tertiary institution, workout the best route, how long it takes to get there, what to do and where to go, where are the toilets, the café , the student union etc.
Support and foster their independence Remember, for a better chance at success, your sons motivation in choosing a particular course
is essential Be prepared to embrace change!

To the new student and family St Patrick’s College 2012 On behalf of the St Patrick’s College Cricket Support Group (CSG), I extend a warm welcome to you and your family to the St Patrick’s community. Over the past couple of years, the CSG has been working with the College to develop cricket through various avenues, including students competing in the Brisbane North Junior Cricket Association half season (pre-Christmas) club compe-tition. The additional competition, clinics and coaching saw the players gain valuable experience and that has been re-flected in the school’s results. The CSG also works with the school with the provision of cricket infrastructure, including additional practise nets, bowling machine and top dressing of the main ovals. Parents are most welcome to join the CSG and/or provide feed-back regarding projects that will benefit the players and facilities. In 2010, the College entered 16 teams from U10 (current year 4) to U16/17 in the BNJCA half season competition to enhance the players’ skill levels and enjoyment of cricket. An invitation is extended to your son/s to join the St Patrick’s teams for the upcoming competition before they commence at the College. Your son/s may well find as mine did that they will forge friendships that helped ease the concern of walking into a new school. Brief details of the competition are:
Specialist coaching clinic – probable date Sunday 2 October 2011 - to be confirmed; First round: Saturday, October 8; Final round: Saturday, December 3; Cost: $70 (clubs charge around $110); and Inclusions: Player registration, coaching clinic, perpetual shield, and end of season awards event and BBQ.
Please contact us before 2 September if you would like further information or to register for the half season competition.

Once again, welcome to the College and I hope you can join us for a successful cricket season. Kind regards Mark Jones Chair – CSG

Limited Edition Morven Painting Dr Carroll has commissioned local artist Werner Langer to paint Morven 200 limited edition prints have been reproduced from this .All proceeds from sales will be donated to the P & F for future projects. The artist Mr Werner Langer is a local artist who has lived in the Sandgate area for over 40 years. He has been a photographer for most of his life graduating from the College of Art in Brisbane in 1974. Werner had a studio at Fortitude Valley for many years and worked in various fields including advertising, manu-facturers, retailers, and photographing weddings. Mr Langer is married with two children. Werner has produced many other watercolours of the local area and various other areas of interest. If you are inter-ested in viewing his work you can contact Werner on 0408 744119. All proceeds from any sales will be donated to the College Parents and Friends. Werner researched the history of Morven before he began the project. His inspiration came from the sym-bolism of the College rising to glory in 1952 as it was reborn as a College. For this reason Werner chose to paint Morven in the early morning as the sun rose. At this time of day the clouds often sweep across the sky. He also chose to paint Morven flanked by trees as it originally was back in the 1950’s. The paintings are presented in a light green matt and ready to frame in an 8x 10 frame. They are availa-ble for $29.95 each. If you are interested in purchasing a painting please contact the College Office on 3631 9000.
