Who I am• Third generation Kansas farm family– wheat, calves, sheep, goats, chickens, horse, 4-H
• My other life: Ag writer, PR counselor

What’s the issue?• Eaters (consumers) disconnected with how
their food is grown• How do I know?– Popular culture – Jack explains the tux:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_P7yWnAAd0
– News stories – “He doesn’t even own a pair of overalls.”
– Consumer comments– Policy makers – Dept. of Labor regulation

Why should you care?• Exploding world population– United Nations: “produce 70 percent more food for an
additional 2.3 billion people by 2050.” • Global and state ag powerhouse• 20% of world’s calories come from wheat• One Kansas farmer feeds 129 people.
• Farm Bill 2012– In 2008 Farm Bill, 66% of spending was for domestic
nutrition programs (food stamps, emergency food assistance)
• Your dinner table
5
Now’s the time to connect
• Legacy, culture• Technological advances to feed growing world
population, precision agriculture– Smart phone apps, satellite-based guidance (auto-
steer), Geo-referenced data at harvest (yield mapping , on-the-go soil sensors, variable rate technologies)
– Accuracy to the inch, square foot• Continued emphasis on sustainability
