From Our Outgoing Pre side nt This has been a year of transition for me. Just before Bob and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in June Bob had a series of falls one of which sent him to the hospital. As a result of a number of events I have decided to retire from my part-time job which I have loved. Finishing my second year as president of CGO will leave me free to be available for Bob, friends, and family plus allow me valuable time to improve my lettering skills. I sat down this week to design a thank you card and realized how rusty you can become when you don’t take time to practice.

Some things I will miss: · Watching members enjoy a program and feeling the satisfaction afterward. · Working with a board that changed often but helped me over many hurdles. · Organizing a retreat with Kim that was very successful. · Attending the SWCC for two years. · Having several board members that never disappointed me: Carol and Patty. · Developing the Above and Beyond concept at local libraries. Some things I won’t miss: · Returning a myriad of e-mails daily. · Last minute cancellations. · Losing a CGO member and saying goodbye to others. I am grateful for everyone’s involvement and look forward to CGO’s growth as Teresa Wilber takes the reins in August.

Yves Leterme announces the birth of LITTERAE Litterae is a brand new project in which Yves’ two passions and professions, Ancient Rome and calligraphy, are merged. Here is the link to see a brief trailer with more information: Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oL4s7d8SyEk You don’t have to be a calligrapher to enjoy this collection. I like to think of Litterae as a nice present for everyone who takes delight in letters and/or literature

A little CGO history for our 35th Anniversary

WE ARE CORAL... By Leslie Wade

... and Coral are we! Seriously? We don’t look a DAY over.... 30! CGO has come a long way and I am personally proud and elated that I have been a part of this glorious body for most of these 35 years [even during a brief stint in St. Louis, MO]. Some background: Fran Mitchell and 29 like-minded individuals met at her home in the DARK AGES.... ooops! I mean on July 21,1979 with the intent of starting an organization dedicated to the study and promotion of the lettering arts in the middle of the country. Eventually, 62 members would sign the Charter and CGO was OFF & RUNNING!! That being said, let us recognize our 35th anniversary with a trip down memory lane. Fond memories that many of you will recall, but may make some of you scratch your heads in wonder: 1 - 1981 TEES [“Calligraphers Letter Better”] 2 - 1985 BUTTON BOX lovingly designed by Leon Mathews 3 - 1983 featured our new BANNER with a native American theme [now gone to dry rot!] 4 - 1985 APRONS with a choice of 6 different colors and one of the following sentiments: “I ink therefore I am!!” “The pen is mightier...” “In pursuit of excellence” “Ain’t the paint quaint?” “My garden is a thing of beauty.” [Each accompanied with a quirky illustration by the wonderfully talented Ann Hogue*] 5 - 1989 TOTE BAGS, featuring a happy monk design created by Pete Finley [a former TREASURER who did the books in magnificent calligraphy!] 6 - During the 80s, several of us would enter the State Fair... and win! 7 - INKLINK ‘parties’ using a hot waxer for paste up 8 - PEN PALS assigned to each new member 9 - 1983 is CGO’s 1st CHRISTMAS CARD EXCHANGE and there was a CGO calendar FOR ALL SEASONS *The woman who DRAGGED me into Guild... and I love her for it! Initial monthly meetings were held at libraries, schools and shopping centers until our home at TGC was established; how lucky we are! One area of DRAMA at conference affiliate meetings is always ‘we have no place to meet!’ We used to DRESS UP for installation of officers and give out the Quill and Scroll Awards to various deserving members. CGO would publish and sell the clever NOTEBOOK/QUOTEBOOK

in 1982; would publish the INKLINK annually with samples of our work and interesting articles. We have had Secret Scribes; used to participate in Gilcrease Rendezvous til it got weird! Wonderful library cart! CGO provided muslin squares for our Barn Door styled quilt in 1992 [where is it????]. CGO has exhibited all ‘round Tulsa and even BA; has done Mayfest, Valentines for Vets, Ma Day cards for kids through DHS, etc. etc.......Wow!

I cannot say enough about our founder, Fran Mitchell. There is no finer human being. She has been a capable leader, a most caring and talented teacher and a fine friend. Thank you, Fran, for all that CGO is today.

June Nessler worked for 3 years on this “Paducah Nine Patch-Civil

War Style” quilt and it received a blue Ribbon at the Green Country

Quilt Guild show in June! It won in the “pieced and professionally

quilted” category and was June’s first blue ribbon. Blocks were

exchanged by 5 others across the country over a one year period.

Mini Journal

This little mini journal is made from the pattern given to

us by Janet Takashi in her journaling class and also seen

in Pages magazine. Ours is made from an 8 ½ X 14

computer paper. Marj recently requested that several

members provide her lettering artwork to produce a CGO

Lettering Journal with samples of letterstyles. It is

beautifully done! Marj, thanks for the idea for doing the

layout/reproduction work It is so cute and informative at

the same time. The guild will provide these mini journals

to new members to show them styles of lettering they may

want to learn.

Just for fun, June decided to enter the mini journal into

the “min zine challenge”, Publishing on a Miniature Scale

as seen in the Pages journaling magazine. Pages is

published by “Cloth, Papers Scissors” magazines. I made a

decorative cover, bound it with embroidery floss, and

added some beads. The final entry date is August 19th. If

our entry is selected, it will appear in the winter issue of

Pages magazine. I entered it as a CGO Production with

Marj and I as the coordinators. June Nessler

Above and Beyond - August The recent Above and Beyond - Creative Journaling class was a fun time with 12 people attending. Pat Lynn Moses came from Oklahoma City to teach us. She brought supplies, books and a lot of tool and technique ideas to share. This was a fast moving mini workshop.

Thank you Pat Lynn for teaching. I want to mention that we had three guests attend also.

Zentangle This is a sign Pam Neumann lettered for the Zentangles Group which meets twice a month at the Schusterman-Benson library, 3333 East 32nd Place in Tulsa. The lettering is done in the “Amen Alphabet,” which she learned in an Anna Pinto workshop in Oklahoma City last fall. The “Frame” is created using the Zentangle pattern known as “Rick’s Paradox,” or simply “Paradox.”

We would like to invite anyone who is interested, to join us for our informal gatherings at the library. We now have two Certified Zentangle Teachers (CZT) who attend the group regularly, and a third CZT who comes on occasion. It was decided at the last meeting, that we will have a CZT lead instructions for creating a different tangle at each meeting, for those who wish to participate. There is no cost for attending the meetings, but there are “official” materials for sale, if you wish to buy them. However, all that is necessary to begin working with Zentangles is paper, pencil and a pen. The pen recommended by Rick and Maria is a black Micron 01 pen, but Zentangles can be created even with a stick in the sand. I must stress that this Zentangles Group is by no means a Zentangles class or training. It is just an opportunity for people who share a love of the Zentangle method to experience Zentangle creation in a group setting. For more information, or to be added to the Zentangles Group email list, please phone Pam at 918-706-7669, or email her at [email protected].
