PROJECT BRIEFThe Micro-Kitchen: Big Ideas for Small Spaces

New York City—it offers everything at your fingertips. But like many metropolitan areas across the globe, those opportunities are also making our world smaller. Increasing urbanization and population growth are bringing us closer together—literally. The home size is decreasing while rent and mortgages are increasing. Even so, that modest space shouldn’t equate to a reduction in functionality, living standards or a reflection of personal style.

In this project I have designed a functional micro-kitchen in a 7ft x 25in space. Along with the kitchen design I have created a counter top screen to run all the appliances in the micro-kitchen.

Part 2Visualization & Conceptualization

• Kitchen Layout

I started with the basic layout of the micro kitchen within the parameters of a 7ft x 25in space. This is a sketch of how the cabinets, appliances and other features of the kitchen would look. I took the idea of modular shelves that could be adjusted for the user. There is also a fold out counter that can be folded down when it is not in use.

Part 2Visualization &

Conceptualization• Counter Screen

Sketch

Once you configure the physical kitchen you can control all your appliance from one screen mounted on the counter. Above is an early concept sketch of how the counter screen would be designed. The icons represent each appliance, a recipe section and grocery list.

The counter screen flowchart on the right lays out the different options and functions of each appliance. This is an early sketch that will change as the project develops and suggestions made from the user testing.

DESCRIPTION OF PROCESSEach user was presented the paper prototype out on the counter and given a couple of tasks to perform. While they performed the tasks I observed their actions and how they moved through the program.

USERS6 People with a wide age range. Pat, Ray, Cloe, Tasha, David and Halle.

TASKS PERFORMED• Turn on the dishwasher• Turn on the oven• Turn on two burners on the stove• Adjust the temp in the fridge• Add to the grocery list• Find a recipe

SUCCESS/FAILURE Dishwasher, stove top, adjusting temp fridge were all successful and without any questions or issues.

The stove took more time to figure out. I believe it is a little confusing to see both screens next to each other. This could be a screen that could be combined. Having the timer on one screen and the oven settings on another made people question when to start the timer.

Grocery List home screen seems to make people stop and wonder what to do next. Having the list at the top made it harder to find the add item option on the lower part of the screen. I believe the action of adding to the list is more important than seeing the list so that should be first. Once they see the options on how to add items the steps through that process went smoothly. No one hit on the share button. Which makes me think I might need more explanation on that section.

A big issue I need to simplify is the recipes section. Searching for recipes was not clear to anyone who tried that task. I realize I did not include anyway to key into the search screen. Even if there was a keyboard, I had to explain how to key in a work and select which course to see the list of recipes.

USER COMMENTS THAT MERIT SHARINGSide navigation takes up too much room on the left side. Suggested making it smaller and move to the bottom.

How do you get items from your recipe to your shopping list?

How do you add recipes? Or create your own recipe?

Part 3User TestingThis is the user testing with paper

prototype process and the results.

Part 4Revisions

• Medium-Fidelity Wire-frames

After going over the user testing results I have created another set of wire-frames. These are focused on fixing some of the issues discovered during the testing.

Part 4Revisions

• Medium-Fidelity Wire-frames

Taking these wire-frames a step further I have creates simple medium-fidelity prototype. Here is the link to the lucid charts file:

CLEAN

HOME SCREEN

Responsive tiles on your home screen give you a snap shot what is going on in your kitchen. You can see if your dishwasher is running or if your oven has pre-heated.

Pre-Heating320º

The final design of the screens is the exciting part. This makes the process feel real. I can really see this program on my home counter and use it to control my micro-kitchen. I believe I have incorporated some unique features into my design.

OVEN SCREEN

Task bar gives you status of all running appliances and allows you to toggle between them.

In the favorites menu you can just select the option and it will set your temp and timer for you in one easy click.

STOVE TOP SCREEN

The burners are adjusted by sliding your finger over the controls. The burner is changes color to represent the temperature.

RECIPE SCREEN RECIPE SCREEN

The recipe feature allows you to scroll through loaded recipes with an image, title and small description. By tapping on one it enlarges an gives you the entire recipe.

As you are working through the recipe you can toggle between the oven and stove controls at the bottom.

Part 5Conclusion

CONCLUSIONFrom the sketchy start to clean finish this kitchen counter screen for my micro-kitchen turned out good. The controls of all the appliances are simple and easy and I incorporated some unique features with the recipes and grocery list.
