Page 24: Call us today and let us show you how. - Stageview · Broadway Theatre, Ali in Kerrigan and Lowdermilk’s immersive musical The Bad Years, and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet at HSRT.

Back in 1971, Michael O’Flaherty (Goodspeed’s Resident Music Director) co-founded, along with the late Jane Simmon Miller, a community theater called Genesius in Reading, Pennsylvania. Michael was in his early twenties, and I was just thirteen years old when I found my way to this very special theater that opened its arms to young people, encouraging them to explore every facet of musical theatre. This was the beginning of a life-long friendship. In later years, a second theatrical collaboration evolved when I talked Michael into writing a musical about Genesius’ fabled early days, called, appropriately, GENESIUS, The Musical. The show was presented in 2008 at Goodspeed’s Festival of New Musicals and was subsequently showcased in New York City the following summer.

Michael and I were not writers by trade, although we had dabbled in the process throughout the years. But after GENESIUS, we had caught the “creating-bug” and wanted to write something else. I had been the Artistic Director at Genesius Theatre for over a decade, and I was looking for an annual production of A Christmas Carol. Many of the versions I found had already been presented several times in the Reading area, and, to be honest, we were looking for something where we wouldn’t have to pay royalties. Reading is in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, so I thought it would be very unique to take this classic story and set it in Berks County, which has an abundant German heritage. The “Belsnickel” is a sort of “Bad Santa” etched in Germanic folklore, and from that character concept, Michael and I created The Belsnickel Scrooge, a Pennsylvania Dutch version of A Christmas Carol set in Reading during the Great Depression. The production has been performed at Genesius and other Berks venues since 2009, with much success.

Approximately four years ago, Michael mentioned that Goodspeed was looking for a holiday production to call their own, and I jumped right on that and suggested that we take the coveted Dickens tale and transplant our Pennsylvania Dutch version of the musical to Central Connecticut—Hartford/East Haddam. We decided to set the show on the stage

of the Goodspeed Opera House in 1925. The premise is that Mr. Goodspeed himself has requested that legendary Connecticut actor and original Sherlock Holmes (and hometown boy) William Gillette play Scrooge in a final production of A Christmas Carol before the Opera House is shuttered for good. After doing extensive research, I discovered that the brilliant writer Harriet Beecher Stowe, the great showman P. T. Barnum, and satirist Mark Twain not only lived in Central Connecticut at one time, but they all knew each other and were also friendly with William Gillette. So, in this salute to the Nutmeg State, they become the pesky Spirits—past, present, and future—who visit Scrooge on that fateful Christmas Eve. To add to the fun, J.P. Morgan, the influential Hartford financier, visits Scrooge as the musical’s new version of Jacob Marley. All the other classic Dickens characters are on hand, too, such as Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, Scrooge’s nephew Harry, and his sister Jen, to name a few.

Taking a page from the late, great Broadway librettist Peter Stone’s theatrical playbook (1776, Titanic), I appropriated Gillette’s, Stowe’s, Barnum’s, and Twain’s humorous and often times thought-provoking quotations. I stitched them together throughout the scenes so their sage advice and comedic mockery of old Scrooge, entwined with Michael’s inspiring music and lyrics, make for a lighthearted, amusing, and very special holiday experience! And now, we are both truly looking forward to assessing your reactions to this customized storyline and fully digesting your localized “Nutmegger” input, which will certainly add another layer of Connecticut-ian whimsy and Christmas merriment to this time-honored classic.

Thinking long term, Michael and I have high hopes that this magical Christmas story will become a tradition at Goodspeed and be presented annually for many Decembers to come. However, since “the gift is the present,” it’s our sincerest wish that you and all of Connecticut embrace our new version of A Christmas Carol that features this great state and the wonderful people in it, as we hope you make this your newest holiday tradition!

Did you know that Goodspeed has the only library dedicated solely to musical theatre in the country? Make an appointment to stop by and peruse the unique collection by contacting Education Manager & Library Director Josh Ritter at 860.873.8664 ext. 522 or by email at [email protected]. The library is located a few minutes up the street from The Goodspeed at 20 Norwich Rd, East Haddam, CT 06423. To learn more about the library, please visit www.goodspeed.org/education-library/library.

Where We’ve BeenGoodspeed’s beginnings date back to 1963 when we opened our doors as a professional musical theatre in an historic building on the banks of the Connecticut River in East Haddam. Under the direction of Michael Price from 1968 to 2014, Goodspeed transformed from a struggling entity into a non-profit arts organization with a mission. At first, Goodspeed’s commitment was to discover rarely produced musicals from the repertoire, reworking them and bringing them to life. We were also intent on adding to the repertoire by discovering and nurturing promising new musicals presented at both The Goodspeed and The Terris Theatre in neighboring Chester.

In our history, we have produced over 250 musicals, including over 70 world premieres, and exported 21 productions to Broadway. Goodspeed stands as the first regional theatre in America to earn two special Tony Awards, one in 1980 for outstanding contributions to the American musical and a second in 1995 for distinguished achievement for a regional theatre.

Who We Are TodayGoodspeed Musicals mounts both new and newly revived musicals each year on our main stage at The Goodspeed in East Haddam and on our second stage, The Terris Theatre, in Chester–a total of more than 400 performances during the April to December season, attracting 130,000 patrons to the Connecticut River Valley. We stand at the forefront of producing and preserving the American musical, simultaneously reinventing the classics and inventing new ones. We attract well-known icons of the theatre world and foster emerging talent among composers, lyricists, and librettists. Each year, thousands of actors, directors, choreographers, and technicians aspire to come to Goodspeed to practice their craft. Among millions who know and love this art form–and those who appreciate its history and enduring appeal–Goodspeed is widely recognized as “The Home of the American Musical.”

Throughout the year, and intensively during the winter months, Goodspeed addresses issues unique to the field by offering innovative and highly-sought after programs through our Max Showalter Center for Education in Musical Theatre, including the celebrated Musical Theatre Institute providing programs for aspiring musical theatre professionals. The Arts Education Collaboration provides art-education programs for underserved Connecticut youth. The Festival of New Musicals features students from The Hartt School and the Boston Conservatory performing staged readings of three brand-new musicals, industry-related seminars, a symposium, and cabaret performances. Each winter, Goodspeed also hosts the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony that invites musical theatre writing teams to retreat from daily life for a four-week residency and concentrate solely on writing new musicals. In addition, Goodspeed serves as a resource for the preservation of the art form through our Scherer Library of Musical Theatre, the second most extensive musical theatre research library in the United States.

The Future We EnvisionThe Goodspeed campus will continue to serve as a thriving artist colony where the creative process informs the work on our stages and expanding educational programs. We aspire to serve as a safe haven where a singular commitment to discovery and innovation will enrich the field with the next generation of musical theatre artists.

ABOUT GOODSPEED MUSICALS

GOODSPEED MUSICALS | 2017 SEASON 23

Page 26: Call us today and let us show you how. - Stageview · Broadway Theatre, Ali in Kerrigan and Lowdermilk’s immersive musical The Bad Years, and Juliet in Romeo and Juliet at HSRT.

The mission of Goodspeed Musicals is to be the leader in preserving and producing musical theatre of the highest quality by:

• Rethinking, restoring, and producing works that are valued and significant in the history of musical theatre; • Developing new musical theatre works; • Nurturing the talents of new composers, lyricists, and librettists; • Encouraging and developing the talents of artists, technicians, and administrators; • Inspiring future audiences through education programs and outreach efforts; • Preserving and expanding the archival collections of its Scherer Library of Musical Theatre and making them available for professional use; • Maintaining the Goodspeed Opera House, a national historic landmark.

OUR MISSION

The Terris Theatre was inaugurated in 1984 by Goodspeed Musicals for the development of new musicals. The theatre is named in honor of the actress Norma Terris, star of Jerome Kern’s Show Boat and devoted patron and trustee of the Goodspeed Opera House during her later years.

Miss Terris began her stage career as a young vaudeville performer, which led to her first major role in George M. Cohan’s Little Nellie Kelly. She gained immortal acclaim as the creator of the roles of Magnolia and Kim in the original Florenz Ziegfeld 1927 production of Show Boat. After making two films for Fox, Married in Hollywood and Cameo Kirby, she starred for 10 seasons at the Municipal Opera Company in St. Louis.

Miss Terris first performed for Goodspeed audiences in the 1970 production of Little Mary Sunshine. She presided over the dedication of The Terris Theatre, and in 1987 she established the Norma Terris Fund to expand the talents of individuals and to foster the vitality, excellence, and diversity of musical theatre at The Terris Theatre. A beloved friend of the Goodspeed Opera House, Norma Terris is remembered for enriching the art of musical theatre with her beautiful voice, fine acting, and generous spirit.

The Terris Theatre formerly was a factory built in the early 1900s for Susan Bates, Inc., which became one of the largest manufacturers of knitting needles and needlework accessories. In 1982, after relocating to a larger facility, Susan Bates, Inc., donated its abandoned factory in Chester to the Goodspeed Opera House Foundation. An intimate 200-seat performing space, The Terris Theatre was fully renovated, opening its doors on July 10, 1984 with the new musical Harrigan ‘n’ Hart.
