*PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)
from the Iona Abbey Worship Book of Scotland
Eternal God, creator of all that exists; Jesus Christ, redeemer of humankind;
Holy Spirit, life-giving presence; in earth, sea and sky, you are there. O hidden
mystery, sun behind all suns, soul behind all souls, in everything we touch, in
everyone we meet, your presence is around us, and we give you thanks. But
when we have not touched but trampled you in creation, when we have not
met but missed you in one another, when we have not received but rejected
you in the poor, forgive us, and hear now our plea for mercy...

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (Unison) Adapted from The Confession of 1967
God the Holy Spirit creates and renews the church as the community in which
people are reconciled to God and to one another...The life, death, resurrection,
and promised coming of Jesus Christ has set the pattern for the church’s
mission. His life as a human being involves the church in the common life of
people. His service to humanity commits the church to work for every form of
human well-being. His suffering makes the church sensitive to all the
sufferings of humankind...God has created the peoples of the earth to be one
universal family. In God’s reconciling love, God overcomes the barriers
between people and breaks down every form of discrimination based on racial
or ethnic difference...In the power of the risen Christ and the hope of his
coming, the church sees the promise of God’s ultimate triumph over all
wrong...So to live and serve is to confess Christ as Lord.

WE ARE EXCITED TO WELCOME Rev. Jan Edmiston to our pulpit this morning.
Rev. Edmiston was born, raised, and educated in Chapel Hill, NC, where she grew
up in the University Presbyterian Church. She attended Andover-Newton
Theological School in Newton-Centre, Massachusetts and was ordained to the
ministry of Word and Sacrament. She has served several PCUSA congregations, as
pastor and as co-pastor with her husband, the Rev. Fred Lyon. She currently serves
as Associate Executive Presbyter for Ministry at the Presbytery of Chicago, and was
elected Co-Moderator (with the Rev. Denise Anderson) of the 222nd General
Assembly in Portland in June of 2016. Jan writes a blog, A Church for Starving
Artists (https://achurchforstarvingartists.wordpress.com).
DAVID SCHELAT is an Oberlin College graduate, organist, and choral conductor,
known for his ability to improvise creative free accompaniments to hymns and to set
hymn texts imaginatively. This morning’s anthem combines contrasting layers of
driving percussion and vibrant vocal lines, resulting in a vivid and stirring setting of
this familiar text. Our thanks to Bob Adamcik for enriching our worship this morning
as he accompanies the choirs.
DUTCH ORGANIST PAUL TEGELS will be heard at Westminster
Church on Friday evening, February 10, at 8:00, as part of this season’s
Musica Organi recital series. Dr. Tegels is Associate Professor of Music
and University Organist at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma,
Washington, and a past president of the Westfield Center for Historical
Keyboard Studies. Cosponsoring this event will be the Knoxville Chapter of the
American Guild of Organists. The congregation is cordially invited and encouraged
to attend. A nursery will be provided.
PLEASE JOIN US for a cookie reception in the Schilling Gallery following the
11:00 service to meet and welcome Rev. Jan Edmiston and our new members.
SHOW AND WAMS: They're back... Our wonderful, talented, (unbeatable) ladies of

going to join us Sunday evening and host a Joker Tournament. There will be a “learn
or remember how to play” group and an “I want to see if I can play with the experts”
group. This awesome game is described as being like the game “Sorry” played with
cards. Everyone should bring a gently used silly... something to be a prize. (A stuffed
animal, rubber chicken, old DVD, etc.) Barbara will supply fabulous grand prizes,
too. “Everyone's a winner!!!!” The fun will start with a yummy Betty McKeehan meal
at 5, and we’ll finish up by 7:30 p.m. We’re not joking when we say we hope you can
come!!
