Prelude Quartet for Flute and Strings in D major MozartGray Family Ensemble

Mortals, join the mighty chorus, which the morning stars began;God’s own love is reigning o’er us, joining people hand in hand.Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife;Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life.

Leader: We gather in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen

Confession and forgiveness

Leader: As people of God, we do not often stop to reflect upon who we are called to be. We are drawn to the loudest noise and adjust our lives to match the calls of success, wealth, status and appearance. Yet God has a call that is deeper than all this combined. Let us pause for a moment and reflect on the still, small whisper of the Holy Spirit and to ask who we are to become as people of God.

(Silence)

Leader: Good and gracious God,

All: All too often we put our needs, wants and desires above the call to be your sons and daughters. We pursue success with relentless drive so that we can feel complete; we gaze upon ourselves more than the needs of others; we forget to spend time in your presence and we become lost. Loving God, we thank you that you have found us and love us in spite of our self-centered ventures.

Leader: God’s grace is loving and forgiving. As a minister of Christ, I say to all of you: God loves you, forgives you and yearns for you to trust in God’s love. Jesus has redeemed you. The Holy Spirit holds you, and the Father is delighted in who you are.

All: Amen

lesson Romans 7:15-19I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do.

Prayer of tHe dayLeader: God of the journey, you are on a relentless pursuit for the human heart. May we all be open to your Holy Spirit as we dwell in this holy space today. All: Amen

Leader: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. All: And also with you.

antHem Amazing Grace arr. Dan Forrest St. Andrew’s Summer Choir and Gray Family Ensemble

1 Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; My eyes were blind, but now I see.

2 ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my every fear relieved; how precious did that grace appear the very hour I first believed!

3 Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; ‘tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will surely lead me home.

4 When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the noonday sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when the song had first begun.

Psalm 90:1-6, 14Leader: Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. All: Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.Leader: You turn us back to dust, and say, “Turn back, you mortals.”All: For a thousand years in your sight Are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night.Leader: You sweep them away; they are like a dream, All: like grass that is renewed in the morning;Leader: in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; All: in the evening it fades and withers.Leader: Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love,All: so that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

aPostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Holy gosPel Mark 8:31-33

All: Glory to you, O Lord.

Then Jesus began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”All: Praise to you, O Christ.
