It isn’t Twin Peaks, but as mysterious televisiontowns go, Wayward Pines is a reasonably closecousin.

M. Night Shyamalan, the filmmaker who hasbuilt his reputation on eerie tales (“The SixthSense,” “Signs”), brings his approach to thehome screen as a 10-episode Fox series debutsThursday, May 14. Based on Blake Crouch’sbook trilogy, “Wayward Pines” features a rare TVturn by Matt Dillon as a Secret Service man in-jured in a car crash as he arrives to seek twomissing federal agents in the “perfect” title Idaholocale, where a “Stepford Wives” quality isevoked by residents just a little too happy to livethere.

Terrence Howard – continuing his Fox run thisyear after scoring big success as Lucious Lyonin “Empire” – also stars as the overprotectivesheriff who calmly warns the newcomer to “fol-low the rules” in his jurisdiction. Other notablesin the cast include Juliette Lewis (also in hersecond show this year, coming off ABC’s “Se-crets and Lies”), Carla Gugino, Oscar winnerMelissa Leo and Toby Jones (“Tinker Tailor Sol-dier Spy”).

“Serialized TV is like me getting to do a (pro-longed movie) first act,” executive producerShyamalan explains of making his “WaywardPines” move, “develop characters and insinuateand hint at things. That is where my lean is andthat’s where I would love to be, rather than, ‘Getto the boat sinking, so we can get to the plot.’We’ll get there, but we’re going to develop thecharacters. The rhythm of this style of story-telling is very comfortable for me.”

Dillon, whose movie career has been marked bysuch titles as “There’s Something About Mary”and “Crash,” signed up for “Wayward Pines” fora similar reason. “I had questions,” he says,“and I continued to have questions even after Icommitted to doing the show, and I think that’swhat drew me into it. I’m drawn to atmosphericprojects, and I like this.

“For me, the most important thing is that for thecharacters, there’s logic behind everything thatthey are doing. It doesn’t have to make sense toanybody but that individual, but there has to bea truthfulness to who the characters are, and Ithink we all felt that.”

Co-star Gugino believes the atmospheric Van-couver, British Columbia, filming site helped: “Ilove a good mystery, and it’s not just about,‘Let’s reveal these plot elements.’ Those are re-ally interesting and there’s some really great plotreveals (here), but from the very start, this wascharacter-driven. Those are things you can’tfake, and those are things that you do feel, nomatter how much skill is involved. Being some-where and letting it seep in for that period oftime is very significant.”

At the same time America gets its first taste of“Wayward Pines,” so will much of the rest of theworld. It’s set to premiere in more 125 countriessimultaneously, reportedly making it the largestglobal scripted-series launch ever. Shyamalanalso directed the “Wayward Pines” premiere,and he admits he found the limited-run format amajor appeal. Though he doesn’t rule out doingmore TV, he says, “We won’t do it unless it’s or-ganically and creatively correct. The only reasonI said ‘Yes’ to (this) was because it wasn’t thething I think could be an issue when you’redoing TV.

“You don’t know the end, right? So you’re vamp-ing to some extent – then you’re coming up withwonderfully creative ideas, but they may actuallycorner you and you don’t have an end anymore.In this thing, there was a real definitive place itwas going, and all the puzzle pieces fit perfectly.So we would have to make sure that that hap-pened again.”

KARAKILLMER ‘Chicago Fire’ on NBCWhat have your biggest challenges been in

joining “Chicago Fire” as paramedic SylvieBrett this season?There are little technical things we had to learn,

things that if you messed them up, you essentiallywould kill the person. My very first episode, I hadto do something called the Lazaro method ...where if they are too damaged, you have to get airto their lungs somehow. I had to punch a needlethrough the person’s trachea, and I rememberpracticing it and then taking a step back, becauseI was like, “Whoo! I need some air.”It takes a specific kind of person to be able to

stomach something like that, especially in a crisisor an emergency where you have to think on yourfeet. Doing some of that stuff can make you a littlesqueamish, but we rehearse it fairly regularly be-fore we get it down.Since such actions were what sold Sylvie’s

new co-workers on her skills, was there even

more pressure on you from that standpoint?For a new character coming in – and not just to

fill a slot on the team, but that of a character assignificant as Leslie Shay was – a higher bar wasset to try to fill those shoes. I think that as the sea-son has gone on, Sylvie has kind of establishedher own shoes to fill.How did you deal with assuming someone

else’s place on the show, both as the actressand the character?The way that I approached people’s heartbreak

over Leslie’s death was that you had a hint ofwhat it’s really like to lose a civil servant, so I kindof appreciated that people got so upset about it.Even as an audience member, I was disappointedthat she was gone, because I felt like she had themost unfinished business. That journey is veryreal. People don’t always get things all tied up with a bow.

hour episode, the series welcomes Christina Tosi,renowned pastry chef, owner and founder of NewYork City’s Milk Bar, to the judges panel, replac-ing Joe Bastianich. She joins returnees GordonRamsay and Graham Elliot in evaluating the culi-nary work of a field of hopefuls that this seasonincludes an engineer, a chiropractor, a teacher,a fashion designer, a petroleum landman and adrummer, all of whom are in pursuit of a$250,000 grand prize, a cookbook deal and thecoveted title of MasterChef.But first, they have to navigate the field chal-

lenges, which this season includes creating farefor an amusement park, cooking for Las Vegasjugglers, musicians and dancers, and preparingmeals for ranchers and cowboys at a cattle ranch.The challenge at the ranch, shot two hours eastof Los Angeles, was an outdoor set with the con-testants cooking on grills. But according to Elliot,steak wasn’t necessarily what was for dinner.“Actually they have choices,” the chef explains,

“a couple of different proteins, vegetables, thingslike that. And then they really get to use their cre-ativity and come up with something that’s goingto win them over because that’s one of those fieldchallenges where they are the ones that deter-mine the outcome, not us judges. So we can tryto give them some ideas but ultimately if they de-

cide to do something crazy with turkey and veg-etables, it’s their fault for losing.”As for other things to expect this season, Elliot

says, “What’s interesting is the way that the showstarts o this time, is that it kind of pits cooksdoing similar things against each other from theget-go.“So you’ll have like a taco challenge, a burger

challenge, things that people cook for the signa-ture dish, head to head to see who gets into theactual kitchen. And then that is when the showreally starts, and you see everything fromrestaurant takeovers to cooking out in the fieldto just all kinds of fun, exciting ingredients inthe mystery boxes, like seafood and giantcrabs, things like that. So really cool and ob-viously pulling from cooks from all over thecountry.”

What book are you currently reading?“I just finished up Michael Jackson’s auto-

biography ‘Moonwalker.’ ”What did you have for dinner last night?“Last night, we did salmon with quinoa and

I think just a spinach salad with it.”What is your next project?“I’m overseeing the food at the NFL Draft in

Chicago ... so that’s fun.”When was the last vacation you took,

where and why?“We had a five-day break from filming about

maybe three or four weeks ago and I went toHawaii. And I spent five years of my life grow-ing up in Hawaii, so I kind of feel like that’spart of where I grew up. So it’s fun to goback.”

Latifah brings ‘Bessie’

Smith to vibrant life for HBO

BY JOHN CROOKIt’s taken 22 years, but the life story of anAmerican blues icon finally comes to thesmall screen in “Bessie,” premiering Satur-day, May 16, on HBO.

Queen Latifah, also an executive produceron the film, tackles the title role of BessieSmith, who rose from childhood poverty tobecome one of the most successful record-ing artists of the 1920s. As her fame grew,Smith used the music of the blues to givevoice to a social and ethnic class who other-wise had little to no political visibility.

Director Dee Rees, who also co-wrote theTV movie screenplay after writers such asHorton Foote had struggled with it, says shedidn’t want “Bessie” to be a conventionalmusical with slick production numbersdrawn from Smith’s biggest hits.

“I didn’t want it to be a glitzy, ‘jazz hands’biopic,” Rees says, “and I didn’t want to relyon other people’s accounts of her. I wantedto find Bessie’s own take on things, so Istarted with her songs, especially the onesthat she wrote. I thought that would be agood window into her psyche. I wanted toget behind her eyes. What is beautiful fromafar often is very painful up close. I wantedto show that Bessie’s bravado, this strengththat people saw from afar, actually covereda very vulnerable, lonely woman.”

It was that vulnerability that gave Latifah herfirst point of connection with this role.“She had an aching desire to be loved, andshe was willing to do things that were not

the best decisions just to create that love,”the actress says. “She needed to have herwhole family around her, so she basicallyfooted the bill for all of them, just to havethem there – even if they didn’t all get along.She needed to have protection, to feel safe,so that’s why she dealt with (husband) Jack,even though she knew the things he was upto. She couldn’t say ‘I love you,’ though. Shedefinitely had some blocks, but the idea ofcoming home to an empty house was some-thing that she was afraid of.”

Unable to fully give or receive love, Smithturned to multiple relationships ranging fromher marriage to Jack (Michael KennethWilliams, “Boardwalk Empire”), to liaisonswith female lover Lucille (Tika Sumpter) andcharismatic bootlegger Richard (Mike Epps).

“Every person gave her something different,something that she needed,” Latifah ex-plains. “Each of them served a purpose andthey weren’t really interchangeable. I can re-late to that on a lot of different levels.”

“I hope (viewers) take away the realizationthat blues was a form of social protest, andthere was this kind of radical black feminismthat existed with these women, from MaRainey to Bessie Smith to Billie Holiday,”Rees says. “These women are part of a con-tinuum that has shaped entertainment today.They were going against the flow. That’swhy we’re still talking about them today.”

It’s not unusual for country stars to pair upmusically, but rarely have there been asmany teamings on one occasion as a newCBS special offers.Then again, that’s the entire premise of the

two-hour show “ACM Presents: SuperstarDuets,” airing Friday, May 15. This year’svariation on the charitable events staged an-nually by the Academy of Country Music, theprogram was recorded the same weekendthat the 50th ACM Awards ceremony wasstaged last month in Arlington, Texas –where “Superstar Duets” also was taped (atGlobe Life Park), making it convenient formany of the same artists to appear.Luke Bryan was among them, and he’s

teamed with veteran talent Ronnie Milsap.“My manager asked me my thoughts,” Bryanexplains, “and I said, ‘I’d love to get up thereand do that with Ronnie.’ He was probablymy first influence and my first memory ofmusic, period. It’s funny; it’s one thing to beup there singing with him, but when you do itfor TV, it’s documented forever. BY JAY BOBBIN“Back in the day,” daytime dramas werebroadcast live ... and now, “General Hospi-tal” is taking a page from that playbook.Twice.Soon after marking its 52nd anniversary andbeing the most-nominated show in thisyear’s Daytime Emmys (it won three), theABC serial is putting its cast and crew to atest by staging live episodes Friday andMonday, May 15 and 18. The shows will betruly live only on the East Coast, with theWest Coast receiving tape-delayed tele-casts; while most story details are beingkept under wraps, such soap traditions as awedding and characters “caught in (a)crossfire” are promised.“Ron (series head writer Carlivati) and Ihave always been very progressive in theway that we’ve worked together,” says exec-utive producer Frank Valentini, “especiallyon ‘General Hospital,’ trying to move theshow into the 21st century, but there are stillsome basic tenets of serialized storytellingthat we like to incorporate. I think this is away to not only go back and be old-schoolabout it, but also to honor (earlier) shows intheir original format.”In the 1982 movie comedy “Tootsie,” anactor memorably panics over having to dohis soap opera live after the tape of anepisode is ruined. While she isn’t quite thatdistressed about the “General Hospital”prospect, Rebecca Herbst – who has playednurse Elizabeth Webber on the show for 18years – admits to some trepidation.“When Frank told me about it,” she recalls,“my first reaction was, ‘Why? Why are wedoing this?’ It just seems so out of our com-fort zone. This is not what we do, but someof the people are really super-excited ... andothers, like myself, are pretty freaked out. Idon’t have any theater experience, andthat’s because I never wanted to. It’ll be achallenge, but it’s always good to push your-self a little.”

Tyler Christopher has done several tours of“General Hospital” duty as Nikolas Cassa-dine, one of Elizabeth’s exes, and he alsohas done theater work. While feeling thatgives him a leg up in performing “GeneralHospital” live, he also knows the possibleperils.“Especially with the speed at which we workthese days,” he reflects, “anything can gowrong and does, but we’re with a greatgroup of people here, and I think it’s going togo off without a hitch. You can’t just standthere with your eyes wide open; you’ve gotto know your character and the story wellenough to get yourself out of a hole. It’shappened to me on stage where somethinggoes wrong, but you’re so well-rehearsed,you can find your way out of it.”Pleased that the idea for the live “GeneralHospital” episodes came from ABC Enter-tainment president Paul Lee, Valentini real-izes it asks a lot of a team that isn’t used toit to do a live telecast on Friday, then tackleanother one three days later – even with aweekend to catch some breath in-between.Still, he says, “I thought it was a cool idea,and I was up for the challenge. Paul is al-ways thinking of what’s next, so it’s kind offun to be in that kind of environment, wheresomeone who has such an incredibleamount of responsibility still has enoughtime to pay attention to us. It says a lotabout how committed ABC is to the showand to its fans.”

Holmes would be a big mistake.Not only will Holmes be defending histitle at the Wells Fargo Championship,airing from Charlotte, N.C., Thursdaythrough Saturday, May 14-17, on GolfChannel and CBS, it was Holmes whoheld off Spieth and Johnson Wagner in aplayoff to take the Shell Houston Openjust a week prior to the Masters in earlyApril.Including the Masters, through 12

events Holmes made nine cuts and fin-ished in the top 10 four times. At presstime he was ranked third in the Cuppoints standings. Thus far he’s finishedsecond twice this season – at theFarmer’s Insurance Open in Februaryand the WGC-Cadillac Championship inMarch. His only real shortcomings havebeen his inability to be near the top of theleaderboard in major tournaments. Hisbest finish was a tie for 14th at the BritishOpen in 2010.Holmes’ career has been one of ups
